Sure, some devices are lemons out of the box, but if you do your research and stay with the main brands, you should be fine. Also, at least in our experience, building the PC yourself hardly offers enough savings to be worth the time that could be spent elsewhere. Man I see LTT for at least 5 or 6 years. I'm an it consultant and part time music producer, I was starting to have some minor issues with my projects (bigger loads on an 8 years i7 4790k, project's audio cracking and so on ) so I started reminiscing on a new machine. I went for something very very similar to this and the only compromise was to use ddr4 ram and a different less expensive mboard. I have to say I know the processor is 5 or 6 gen away from the other but still... What an amazing performance boost on this build. I reused some stuff (video card, pro audio card, WI fi card) and and was able to build this under 900! The thing eats anything I send it! Super creative freedom, not having hiccups and being able to take care of every production stage on the same project!!! I waited for a year to see what happened with the new tech, check if stuff was stable, and made the move!!! Great recomendation on the i5. It's important to say the i5 has lots of flavors, I opted to stay away from i5 12600 as it doesn't has the e cores. And I never liked the kf versions as graphics might be necessary. Só, Linus ... Thank for being there guiding us!

You should be careful recommending Unraid with parity. They use btrfs, and the btrfs documentation says their implementation of raid 5/6 "should not be used for production, only for evaluation and testing". I don't know how likely failure is or under what circumstances, but it's definitely a caveat that should be mentioned. Edit: I was mistaken, Unraid uses XFS as the default filesystem on all devices (except cache devices; they use BTRFS)
@danieljonsson80952 жыл бұрын
Unraid doesn't use btrfs for the multi drive stuff. Each drive is an individual btrfs fs. You should not use unraid anyway though because unraid has a really bad caching strategy that can lead to massive dataloss as the cache is not redundant.
@matthewgray74442 жыл бұрын
I don’t think btrfs is default or even recommended anymore. I feel like unraid said they only include it for compatibility
@ianhamilton3502 жыл бұрын
@@danieljonsson8095 So, if i'm understanding you correctly, each disk has it's own filesystem and Unraid implements another layer of logical volume management on top?
@danieljonsson80952 жыл бұрын
@@ianhamilton350 Correct. Specifically, XFS, Reiser or Btrfs is supported. This is because these are used to detect bit rot and such. Then the array itself runs similarly to unionfs, with parity done similar to snapraid. And that’s where you get serious issues. Like if I write a file. Now first, it’s written to the cache drive. And it just sits there. It’s a schedule to write from cache to array, so it can be hours before the cache is written to array which is itself ridiculous, but also because if cache now dies, so does your data. Now next step is that it writes the data to the array. Deleted it from the cache, and only now does it start calculating the parity, in another god damn schedule. All while all data that that was just now written to the drive, is lost if any drive in the array fails. It’s an absolutely terrible choice for data safety, and with modern array handling and drives, it’s also terrible for speed which used to be its strong selling point. Hence, it should no longer be recommended, at all, anywhere really.

It’s not *only* ceremonial; the military, for example, is still under the Dominion - the Governor General of Canada, in practice, operates as a representative of monarch and actively communicates with them. Cool, the e6530 plays Halo 2 Cartographer in 1080p default settings perfectly. However it does struggle in some map areas and I tried CSAA 8x and it got pinned to the 30&40s, so I turned off the anti-aliasing and it jumped back to 60fps+Vsync. That is comfotably more than my Tecra A11 can say, it merely handles 720p with plenty of 30fps dips without Vsync and cinematic spots do chug horrendously. I had fun experimenting with both machines with this game as Halo 2 Cartographer can really push a half decent gpu. Oh yeah>NVS 2100m&5200m.
@PileOfEmptyTapes2 жыл бұрын
The NVS2100M is basically a G210, so yeah. Muy potato. The related 8400GS (same chip with half the shaders / TMUs and DDR2 memory) will even turn fullscreen _video playback_ on a 1920x1200 screen into a slideshow with Windows Aero on... GPU loading basically halves with it off. You don't often hear of a GT610 as a revelation, LOL. The NVS5200M with GF117 should have about twice as much _grunt_ as that, really not a bad little GPU for the time. Funny how I'm well familiar with all of these machines, we've had plenty of iGPU-only E6520s, A11s (along with S10s - the battery charging algorithm ought to have been grounds for a class action lawsuit, it's that bad, it'll literally continue until emergency temperature cutoff kicks in) and even the odd E6530 at work. I still have E6330 and E6520 at home. Nice machines although screen calibration was _direly_ needed. Laptop screens used to be so bad, I'm glad that IPS panels are pretty much standard now. Interestingly, with dual channel RAM the performance between HD Graphics 3000 and NVS4200M on the E6520 seems to be almost identical in Furmark P720, even power consumption is. So I settled on the iGPU only, not the least because you can tackle PWM flickering then (which would annoy the living daylight out of me otherwise).
@HedgehogY2K2 жыл бұрын
@@PileOfEmptyTapes First off, I'm also using Windows 7 Aero Blue what a quink-dink. Second, I don't think a G210 is quite close enough of a gpu to use as a reference as DX10 and 10.1 are different API levels in the DX11.1 family. Three, that was a lot of information that I'm shockingly familiar with. I'm a total stranger who knows what you're talking about by chance.

1:37:30 -ish: For laptops, if you need something futureproof, why not grab some Frameworks 😉 For real though, my Framework arrived last week in the first batch to Aus, and am absolutely loving it! There are a few compromises I'm not so happy with, mainly lack of touch screen and not the nicest feeling keyboard, but overall, so happy! Thanks for reviewing last year. It was your review which primarily made me hold out for them. Obviously I watched other reviews as well and followed the company for like a year before ordering was made available to Aus, but it was the confidence Linus had to personally invest that made me go "ok this seriously sounds like something I want to support, even if it means holding out for a while longer on my old, underpowered laptop".

With ZFS, They don't have to be matching. You can use larger drives as replacements, they just won't be fully utilized until the entire VDEV has been upgraded to at least that size. I actually set my pools up so that each drive is a little bigger than the last so each time I replace the smallest drive, it boosts the size of the pool by a bit. That way I don't have to buy all the drives in batches. It's a bit wasteful of space, but it is a frugal option for upgrade paths, and I only upgrade one drive when the pool gets to a certain percentage full.

I was really into this, and followed the rational in terms of part selection, right up until you decided to put a 3050 in the system. I would have at least gone 3060, and I like the original idea of using 3070s. But you obviously know what you guys need way more than I do haha. Are these for editing as well? You mentioned standardizing these computers, but does that include the editing workstations? Or are these for the writers and stuff mainly? Can you even use a 3050 for the kind of editing work you do? Or is editing not done on the local machines? I find it hard to understand the rational of using a 3050, especially when you go with a 12600k and a ballin ass motherboard. Sorry if this sounds ignorant, I'm not super familiar with what is required for video editing as I'm not a video editor, but I feel you would need something better than the 3050 at least.
@Malicious20132 жыл бұрын
I chalk it up to cost. The 3050s are still better than older generation GPUs for less money. I mean they can be found new for less than $250, and with the 4000 series around the corner, keeping costs low now and upgrading later seems the better route. Sinking 4070 money into 3070s when the 4060 will be better than the 3080 seems silly. 3050s are a good temporary budget option, and everything else is somewhat future-proofed.

IIRC it had the highest factory overclock of any 1050 Ti of the time, as well. When working on Windows - I'm a Linux guy at home, but am forced to use Windows at work sometimes - I always use Notepad++. An excellent feature is built-in FTP, so you can actually work on remote files, as if they were local. I consider this an essential for web development work. On Linux, it's basically built into the file explorer itself - using Nautilus, you can "connect to server" using the FTPS protocol and it just mounts it as a directory... and the drivers are, in the background, doing the FTP stuff for you. So it literally appears as if it's a local directory, and you can 100% treat it that way. Open a file in any program, save the file, use the terminal, etc. and it all just behaves as if it were local, albeit a (usually unnoticeable) fraction slower as it's going over the FTP protocol in the background. It's one of those "once you try it, you ain't ever going back" features. So, when I've unfortunately got to use Windows at work, Notepad++ is the saviour for having that built-in FTP thing as well. It's not quite as awesome as what's built into Nautilus out-of-the-box (which mounts it as a directory, so ANY program will see it as if it's a local file and so I can do anything - remote edit an image in GIMP, remote edit in gedit, run it in a terminal, etc. - but it's as close as you're going to get on Windows, without paying stupid money for something likely vastly less impressive than what you get with any old Linux distro out-of-the-box. Seriously, it's not some "fan boy" thing. It's genuinely that, once you know all the Linux tricks, Windows really is painfully inferior in what it offers. Once you're mounting things in all directions - mounting through FTP to remote servers, mounting "/home" directories to multiple machines so that wherever you login all the machines have the same shared "/hojme", mounting a different drive for your "/home" directory to keep applications and data neatly separate (so when I need to switch machines or change distros, I can just do it all painlessly) - it rapidly becomes impossible to tolerate the lack of such a versatile "VFS" structure on Windows. Like, damn, how do you do anything on this crippled piece of shit? It's a shame the Linux challenge was only a short period. If Linus could use Linux long enough to actually understand how it all works and "git gud" at it, then I think he'd drop his Windows "fan boy-ism" in a heartbeat. Thanks to Proton and Steam, it ain't even really much of a compromise to gaming anymore either. But, yeah, if you're stuck on Windows - you poor thing - then you need Notepad++ to save your bacon. Recommended.
