About 40 years ago my children were in their 5 to 7 year range, we bought a half dozen day old chicks. They were Rhode Island reds and we were surprised to find one ended up being a Rooster. We only wanted to get eggs, We did not intend to raise any more chickens, but kept him around anyway. He grew to be king of the ranch serving the five hens with vigor. he was an exceptionally large chicken, more turkey size than chickens size. he would pick fights with my full grown German shepherds, and any unsuspecting human. His spurs grew to about 7 inches long before we started filing the points flat because he was really damaging the hens . Even so Neighbor kids from all around knew better than to attempt retrieving a lost ball. More than once I’d come home and find a kid treed in our backyard with a rooster stomping around the tree trunk, begging for a fight. As he got older, he started to limp a lot because of arthritis. In fact, he took to laying on his back with his feet up in the air, apparently to alleviate some of the pain. The first time I saw this, I thought to myself a chicken head, kick the bucket, and went out to , bury him. But as I got close to him, he looked up at me and as if to say, “what you looking at?” He lived several more years reaching the ripe old age of 10. He was a beautiful bird. I never took him to the fair, but he sure would’ve won every prize on the planet. Thanks for sharing your videos. I’ve decided to look for some chicks tomorrow.

Omg…. That was such an awesome story! Thank you for sharing it. I remember being chased by a rooster when my sisters and I were kids and we were on my grandfather’s farm. They are really crotchety LOL!

yeah, a hen constantly produces eggs in its body. doesnt matter if theres a guy there or not lol a hens gonna lay eggs, but they wont hatch into chickens

The reason they are constantly laying eggs is that's how we have bred them.. The domesticated chickens we know today descend from the red junglefowl (known as gallus gallus) wild junglefowl lay roughly 15-20 eggs a year whereas our domesticated chicken we know today lays up to 300 eggs a year, laying so many eggs isn't natural for them and makes them weak.. but yeh chickins is gallus gallus ,.

Very interesting! I had no idea that the Rooster put so much work into wooing the hen and that hens evaluate whether to mate with a Rooster based on how much he dotes on her. That is almost human behavior! I was wondering why a hen would eject the sperm. Is it because she's not healthy enough to produce full-term healthy chicks, or is there some other reason?

Way off topic. You seem very knowledgeable about chickens. I’ve a question I can not find or get a definitive answer. Do hens that are in factory egg production shoulder to shoulder do the egg call after laying?

Do you mean the person that roasts the chicken, or did you mean *rooster? If you meant the latter; it's not able to do this while it's asleep, so it will assuredly be awake before he tries to cockadoodledoo any of this. Historically, roosters wake everyone else, so they don't typically need woke up. If you meant "roaster," I certainly hope that they are awake, especially since the oven is on. I mean, that's just common sense and fire safety. If they're roasting stuff that early in the morning, one would imagine their alarm woke them, or possibly a rooster, so... full circle?

He will feel bad about how hens have been treated and make sure to only fertilize truly cage-free hens and fight against caged chicken hatcheries as described in various documentaries. He will also make sure his talons/claws are clipped before mating. Later, he will leave her alone until it's time for him to help, at which time he will be a helpful father-to-be. He will teach his chicks about the history of factory farming and hope they aren't sold off to a place where their claws grow into their cagea while they poop down onto chickens below them whilst also being defecated on from above and still aren't made ill becauae they are force-fed a mix of corn and odd bits plus their dead sisters and antibiotics. It's frightful! A life with your eyes open instead of dreaming. But at least it's real life.
