#askeck there's a scene in the clone wars episode "Cat and Mouse" where Admiral Yularen talks about the battle of malastare narrows, which was between him and Admiral Trench and took place before the clone wars. The battle was supposedly fought between republic and corporate alliance ships, and was resolved by a "jedi task force". Considering how vague this piece of lore is, what do we actually know about the pre-war republic military? And more generally, what did warfare before the clone wars look like?
@robertnelson9599 Жыл бұрын
Before the Clone wars, the Republic’s “Military” consisted of Jedi and Judicial Forces. Although there were few large armies fighting after the Ruusan Reformation.
@Olochgu Жыл бұрын
Before the clone wars planets were responsible for their own protection, so they would either train their own security forces or hire mercenaries. This is btw. the reason most CIS ships are not controlled by a droid brain instead of having droid pilots, because many of those ships were intended to be sold to other planets (or corporations) that would staff them with their own personal. Back then a republic fleet would have been an assortment of ships affiliated with planetary security forces, likely from the vicinity of where they were needed, and temporarily placed under a central republic command. Corporate fleets of course would be the private fleets of certain corporations, those were often better put together than republic fleets and better trained. But as said before, large scale engagements like we see them all the time in the clone wars and the galactic civil war were incredibly rare, even during the republics war with the Nihil there was only a very small amount of such large battles. Most battles before the clone wars only involved at best a couple dozen ships, all a lot smaller than the capital ships we got used to with the Republic and the Empire, and it was usually local security or corporate fleets dealing with pirates and raiders.

I think hyperspace travel in Star Wars is such a great concept because - even though it's completely made up, it makes for an incredibly accurate analogy of real life ocean-going travel/trade where one also has to rely on bureaucratic national & international organisations to provide you with the methods and information required to not die. They could have so easily have made it boring and straight-forward - glad they didn't (except for the terrible butchery of hyper-space travel in the sequels, god help us all)
@Olochgu Жыл бұрын
I think what's also worth mentioning is that, while it is possible for experienced navigators to travel hyperspace via a series of short jumps while keeping the danger to a minimum, this technique has pretty much died out in the known galaxy because it was no longer really necessary after the great hyperspace prospecting boom, and the only places it's still widely known and used are the very edge of known space and the unknown regions, because most people there are reliant on it.

The way it always seemed to me, how it worked is similar to making a path in a forest. The first time you walk through untouched forest, you might be blazing a trail: you'll find obstacles, some of which might entirely block your path through, requiring detours. Like say... a cliff. Don't wanna go off a cliff and hit the bottom. The more you use a path once it's been blazed, the easier it is: the most dangerous things usually are not blocking you, and as you repeatedly walk the path, the foliage retreats, like grass not growing over the path and trees not spreading branches that way because they get snapped off. That way a path is maintained and becomes 'stable'. In a forest you have to worry about predators, cliffs, valleys, and errant trees along your foot path. In hyperspace, it's stars, black holes, nebulae, other ships... and predators. Using S-thread boosters would be like using a lawnmower and adding flags or torches along a path: clears the way, makes it easier to 'see' , and keeps away undesirable things.

#AskEck Could you do a video on stun settings? We saw it get a lot of use in Bad Batch. It seems to me that it's more effective than the kill settings, most times. They'd hit stormtroopers once and take them down, while normal bolts take 2-4 to take someone down.
@gehrigstory6674 Жыл бұрын
It took 4 or so stun bolts to take down a Clone Commando in Season 1, Episode 14, though. Also, I think that's because stun bolts work on the nervous system of a target upon impact, which is what knocks out said target. Meanwhile, regular bolts act like regular bullets (For some reason, even though they should work a lot differently, according to the lore.), and someone can obiviously take more than one bullet before he/she/they go down, as long as that bullet doesn't hit anything vital.

@@josesanchezrodriguez1783 basically during the Clone Wars, Anakin was sent on a mission to Chiss Space, at this time, the Chiss had barely had any contact with Republic, and had only heard the barest rumors of the Jedi, during the mission, Anakin found himself allied with none other than Thrawn, who at the time, served in the Chiss military, Thrawn of course probed Anakin with tons of questions about the Republic, the wider Galaxy, and especially the Jedi, Anakin ultimately explained to him how the Jedi Exploration Corp functions, including how they map and create new hyperlanes using the Force. Anakin was very familiar with this as prior to the Clone Wars, Anakin was on track to join the Exploration Corp himself after becoming a Jedi Knight. Thrawn took this knowledge back to the Chiss Ascendency and they founded their "Skywalkers" based on the methods used by the Jedi Exploration Corp, with the name Skywalkers even being taken because A. It kinda fits the job B. Because it was Anakin's information that made it possible. Note none of this is really canon but so far none of it has been contradicted by established canon.

Considering that the Republic has been around for 40000 years (not continuously, but almost), it would make sense that hyperspace lanes are pretty much settled fact. Counting galactic drift and spin, some lanes would shift, but not by much. They would be incredibly safe, and any deviations in the lane would be immediately noticed and entered into the Navigational Database of your destination world, and they would pass it along to the central database on Coruscant, which would disperse that information to all the major trade worlds, where it would be passed along to every other world. Navigational Databases could be updated within a week or two all across the galaxy. However, not every trip you want to make will neccessarily follow an ordained hyperspace lane, especially if you're operaring a pocket freighter like the Falcon, or you're running a pirate organisation preying on a lane's cargo shipping, or you're a military force tracking said pirate fleet. In such cases, you need to rely far more on an up-to-date nav database to safely plot a course through space from your starting point to your destination.

So technology-wise do we think Star Trek’s quantum slipstream drive is a prototype for a Star Wars style hyperdrive? They are both effected by mass shadows, it’s just the slipstream drive is even effected by individual molecules mass shadows (and is technically moving every atom separately through a quantum cascade effect; so it is a highly inefficient drive that requires a crazed amount of pre-plotting the course) Edit. The speeds shown for slipstream drives during Voyager put it around the speed of a class 2 hyperdrive. While borg transwarp corridors allowed for far faster and safer speeds while using a slipstream drive, as they were not only mapped out, but also protected against outside mass shadows

@Olochgu Жыл бұрын
Purrgil just use Hyperspace very differently from the way it works on star ships. They seem to be able to actually navigate hyperspace, instead of following pre-made routes, and thus are often using routes that ships just can't traverse, or that keep shifting, making them useless for starships. It's also not unimportant to note that tracking something through hyperspace isn't easy, even if you have a tracker on it. You can determine their start and end points quite easily, but the actual route they traveled is a whole different thing. Hell, iirc even communication within hyperspace was impossible until a couple hundred years ago. Which in the grand scheme of the star wars galaxy is no time at all.

Taalon was in contact with the waters of the pool and supposedly turned into an Abeloth-like creature. Is it that theres simply physical limitations to how much power some peoples physical bodies can hold, and if so, why do they turn into Abeloth-like creatures?

Can you not use hyper space in Star wars and just use pure thrusters on your star ship at maximum power to get from one place to another?

@gehrigstory6674 Жыл бұрын
@@sdfopsdmsdofjmp7863No, they did use a hyperdrive to get to Tatooine, just one that was too damaged to get to Coruscant, instead.
@gehrigstory6674 Жыл бұрын
@Darth_Traitorous Yes, but it would be very, _very_ slow. It is said that travel to Anaxes from Coruscant, without hyperdrives (Which are both very close to each other on a galaxy map) took several generations to complete. The Millenium Falcon did it between Hoth, and Bespin in The Empire Strikes Back, but it took weeks to do it, even though Bespin was just one star system away from Hoth.

I wonder how it was possible for the Star Wars Galaxy to map the entire galaxy. I know here on Earth we really didn’t survey the Milly Way Galaxy to know how it looks like but scientists observed other galaxies visible and assumed how the Milky Way looks like. For Star Wars I think it would be really trippy when it comes to measuring distance between regions in the galaxy. A planet in the outerrim but is located in a main hyperspace lane like the Hydian way will feel much closer and travel much quickly to Coruscant compared to an inner rim planet that is not well connected to main hyperspace lanes. Even though technically it’s more distant!
@Olochgu Жыл бұрын
The answer is that they didn't. Only a small part of the main star wars galaxy has been explored, what we know as the outer rim is not the rim of the galactic disc so to speak. Wild space and the unknown regions both still belong to the main galaxy yet are almost entirely unmapped. Not to mention the millions, probably billions, of planets within the known galaxy that are still undiscovered/unexplored, because the number of stars in a galaxy is just so incomprehensibly huge.
@jon6309 Жыл бұрын
@@Olochgu I agree. I believe it was mentioned that there was around 1.3 million member worlds under the republic before the clone wars which is pretty small compared to the hundreds of billions of stars that made up the galaxy yet it was the largest known institution of government within the known Galaxy that stretched in every region. I am guessing that if a planet within a sector had no known connecting hyperspace route to the nearest planet part of the galactic network of routes it would exist in isolation but simultaneously with the known galaxy without each other ever knowing the other existed!

#AskEck What are the different speeds for starships? The DS1 circled around Yavin in 30 minutes. The rebel starfighters reached it after 15min. They then accelerate to attack speed. That would imply a speed of some 100.000 clicks per hours. However, when they fly through the trench (without atmosphere), it looks more like a real world jet fighter speeds. How can Star Wars starships cross planetary distance in a few minutes, while still fighting at visual range (see Ahsoka when finding the Eye of Sion or when Bo-Katan and Mando are attacked by Tie Interceptors). Many thanks in advance, cheers!
@Kingdomkey123678 Жыл бұрын
There is no explanation for why ships fight at visual range in either canon or legends. It’s just a rule of the universe, BVR Combat never caught on for major engagements for some unknown reason. Some head-cannon that at some point in the distant past of the Star Wars Galaxy, stealth technology got so good that the only way to shoot something was to see it with your own two eyes. Of course that doesn’t cover all the sensors and lock one we see in the films, but maybe those are also optical in nature. As for speeds there were combat and cruising speeds in space, cruising speeds are generally what you would use for crossing solar systems while traveling at sub-light speeds. However cruising would be far too fast for combat, you’d blow right past what ever you were trying to hit. So you would have to switch to combat speed which would be far slower than cruise. “Accelerate to combat speed” was likely said because they didn’t think about this in the films’ production. Though ironically in a strictly scientific sense acceleration is only the action of changing speed, it’s only among the laymen that it means to speed up. So I guess it’s still technically correct
@EmptyshBavaria Жыл бұрын
@@Kingdomkey123678 In the 2003 game "Freelancer" ships had cruising engines. Much faster than usual combat speeds, took a couple of seconds to charge and weapons were deactivated. I would like to see some similar explanation within the Star Wars universe. Otherwise ships would approach with extremely high cruising speed, fire everything they have and take off at cruising speed again, noo need for trench runs or dog fights. In any case, thank you very much for taking your time for a reply :)
@Kingdomkey123678 Жыл бұрын
@@EmptyshBavaria If you did that at cruising speed you wouldn’t be able to evade any return fire. The G-Forces of changing directions at such speeds would turn any organic pilot into pink mist in their cockpit Droid operated AA existed so it could easily react to and return fire to a ship making a strike at cruising speed

#askeck What are your opinions on Galactic Battlegrounds? Particularly with the Expanding Fronts mod. I know you feature a lot of EaW in your videos, which I also play a fair bit of, but I gotta say ground battles in EaW are rather terrible via the lack of fine unit control(like formations and stances) and shoddy pathfinding not even the best map design could help. To me, this is where GB really shines, but sadly seems rather forgotten compared to EaW.

@gehrigstory6674 Жыл бұрын
Not much would be different, because The Death Star would still one-shot it, just like it did The Lucrehulk. The Bellator might've gotten some firepower off on The Death Star, but nothing that would destroy it, especially before The Death Star's superlaser comes online.

@Olochgu Жыл бұрын
Light of the Jedi actually provided an answer to that. Because Hyperspace is an alternate dimension, and because of a whole lot of fake science mumbo jumbo, ships create their own little pocket within hyperspace, which makes it virtually impossible to encounter another ship while traveling. At least as long as you are traveling by the conventional rules of hyperspace travel.

I am curious how often these hyperspace lanes change, at least when you consider that a galaxy will move around its core (black hole) like planets to a star.
@Olochgu Жыл бұрын
Depends on where you are. Within the areas of the star wars galaxy we are usually moving, it doesn't seem like there is much movement at all, or at least it's so gradual that routes can easily be traveled for months without an update. But in the unknown regions for example, we know that Hyperspace lanes are not usually consistent for more than a few weeks. Apparently it's because of a series of supernovas that went off eons ago that made hyperspace in the area very shifty. That's why the civilizations within the unknown regions are so reliant on force enhanced navigators, like the chiss sky-walkers or the void-guides, for quick traversal. Otherwise they had to rely on jump-by-jump travel, only making very short hyperspace jumps, which was much slower and came at increased risk.
