You are right, but you got it backwards. Characters wearing gloves is a neat shortcut for animators to hide their clearly human-like hands. It is a common solution for anthropomorphic animal characters. If you'd think how their actual hands might look like, you'd start experiencing an uncanny valley effect really quickly.

I think there's another sub-stereotype which is more recent in nature. As now domestication of animal as a pet has skyrocketed in recent decades, some movie use dogs as sign of innocence (tapping the Pluto dynamic) that's why there are many movies where villian kills a dog to show how cruel he is. But this stereotype is also getting old now.

one of the things that has amazed me is the idea that killing a dog is seen as worse than a human. Outside movies and in video games like wargroove (where dogs run away, but humans die), or Hades (Where you avoid a fight with your dog by bribing him, spoiler) you see dogs as a paragon. it's a weird reflection of our views and culture.
@iminni34592 жыл бұрын
I suppose it's for a similar reason that killing a child almost never feels justified in media: they are so innocent that you can't justify it by saying that they "deserved it"
@oliverholmes-gunning53722 жыл бұрын
Personally I think it makes sense. As human beings we understand the flaws of fellow humans, and as such we can accept that when a character dies on-screen, they either had it coming or at least understood the risks that lead to their death. Animals on the other hand exist in a far less complex state of being, and as such it always feels more emotionally impacting when we see an animal suffer or die with no ability to understand why it's happening to them (I guess the fact that it's harder to watch children die on-screen than it is to watch adults ties in to the same concept of innocence). Add to that the fact that dogs are among the most loyal and trusting of all animals and have been specifically bred to be our "best friends" for thousands of years, and it's not difficult to see why we are so attached to them and find it hard to maintain the same level of objectivity when seeing them die in a movie as we can with humans (I myself am fine with any amount of sickening gore on the screen in regards to a human, but I always skip over a scene where a dog dies, even if it's off-screen- say for example the scene in American Psycho where Bateman stabs the homeless guy's German Shepherd and you don't see it but hear it whimpering; I can't watch that, and yet The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is one of my favourite movies). It may be counter-productive in regards to the survival of our own species and all that, but personally I detest (or at least am ambivalent towards) the vast majority of human beings but love all dogs, and I've encountered a lot of people who feel the same way.

@@joywolf83 I get the idea, but it's still a statement of the value of human life being less than a dog's. It's a sanitation issue for me, and a devaluation of human life.

i was just thinking in the disney animated universe, all the anthro animal people evolved sonehow from lower lifeforms. so maybe Mickey evolved from common mice rodents, while goofy evolved from wild dogs. . just loke humans have an ape ancestor, but apes are still around, maybe that explains why mousepeople, dogpeople and duckpeople exist in thendisney universe but regular mice, dogs and ducks also exist as well. . so goofy have pluto as a pet, might be like a human having a chimpanzee as a pet . . and news flash, chimps are dangerous and savage, do not try to make a chimp into a pet. . but then again, disney characters also exist in a universe where humans also exist, if you want to take who framed roger rabbit as canon, where mickey and donald also exist alongside daffy duck and bugs bunny and humans, and then there was the cartoon "Bonkers" where disney animalpeople exist alongside humans. . then we also have the fact that plutois obviously smarter than a regular dog. so, like, what if pluto is actually a dog person like all the others, but he's differently abeled special needs?

Nah sorry, the african american comparison to pitbulls is just wrong. Unlike african americans, pitbulls were selectively bred to be efficient at blood sport and quick aggression and mood shifts, we already have proved that different human races don't seem to have different levels of aggression. I don't care if you've seen one study on the contrary, it doesn't change the countless other studies which have concluded that these are bred to be dangerous dogs, and especially anecdotally of a kind family with a pitbull suddenly eating a childs face off without warning. I understand that pitbulls can feel love and affection, like all dogs, and I understand the viewpoint from someone who's had a pitbull who hasn't attacked someone, but I just simply don't believe it. It should be our responsibility to stop the future breeding of these dangerous dogs. I hope we don't breed anymore and see them go fully extinct in my lifetime.
