I am so glad you got Gideon evaluated. I am also a mom of a dyslexic and dyslexic tutor. Speech is also another possible indicator of dyslexia. Gideon is at a good age to start remediating dyslexia and you caught it early. That’s great! Enjoy those babies, they are adorable!

As a retired elementary teacher, you are correct about dyslexia, and I’m so happy that you have caught this now. There are so many strategies that can be used. Every child learns differently, and that’s ok.

That's one issue with homeschooling. Joy doesnt have the abilities to teach a child with a learning difference like dyslexia. Thankfully they're doing the right thing, but I think of the many young moms with only a GED who are the teacher for their kids who don't identify learning issues.

@mygirldarby, my cousin, has a daughter with dyslexia. She attends public school. She was not diagnosed with it until she entered middle school, and the teachers realized she couldn't read. How did she go through all her grade school years surrounded by teachers with "abilities" and not one of them helped her? Did the middle school help her with this? No, her mom paid 100s of dollars a month to take her to a program at Children's Hospital every Wednesday morning. That is how she learned to read. You know what the public school did? They turned in my cousin for truancy because her daughter missed every Wednesday morning of school. They knew where she was at. Had a written and emailed note from Children's Hospital and yet still turned her in. This is NOT an isolated incident. The national average reading proficiency in public schools is 46%. That means less than half of kids can read at grade level. The average American (including adults) reads at a 7th grade level. Only 5% of kids are homeschooled. So what are all these teachers with abilities doing? Why is there such low reading proficiency in America? My homeschooled daughter has dyslexia. You know what made her different than my cousins daughter? I was teaching her on an individual basis and realized she needed help. I got her that help in the form of tutors and special programs designed for her. I realized this at 5, not in middle school. She is now entering 9th grade with a 9th grade reading level. Above the average of the majority of Americans.

I wish I knew you would get this message, but there are lamps for little kids that change color (from red to green) based on the sleeping schedule you set. My rules are that green means they can wake up and leave their room to play. I use the lamp for nap time/quiet time too, so it’s red for one hour every afternoon before the green light automatically activates. You set the times and when it’s red, my rule is the children need to be doing a quiet independent activity in their room if they don’t feel like napping/sleeping. My kids love it because they independently know when they can leave their room in the morning, quiet time isn’t interrupted by questions about when it will be over, and it completely changed their sleeping habits too! I think the self-sufficiency actually helps them sleep longer because their bodies adjust to the red/green light system. A little play with it to make it fun, some praise when they follow it, and it’ll be a household staple in no time!

I have severe dyslexia (all 6 possible symptoms) and going to someone who specialised in Irlen syndrome to get special coloured glasses was a huge i guess breakthrough? For me. They helped me be able to stop focusing on distractions on the page and be able to implement corrective techniques, it also helped that my mum who is a high school English teacher and studied ways to teach Kids like me after I was diagnosed, she was actually diagnosed with it at the same time too, it runs strong in her family. I was very behind in English when I was diagnosed in year 4 at school (age 9) and by the time I was in year 11 (age 16) I was doing the English class that would be equivalent to what I think u call an a.p class in the states (I’m Australian) and our classes are harder per grade level than the us so our year 11 is what you would learn in ur first year at college (why you don’t need a degree to get a good job here) so advanced English, and I was getting strait A’s. I was set the be in the top 10% of my graduating year, but I relapsed with a previous cancer diagnosis half way through year 11 and was never well enough to return to school. My mum has 5 brothers, the middle one does not have dyslexia and is a mechanical engineer at the top of his field, the uncle directly above him has severe dislyixa, like, he won’t even post on social media unless it’s just a pic because reading and writing are extremely difficult for him and he is embarrassed when he spells simple words wrong at age 60 (not his fault) he is a mechanic but extremely smart with the way this work and has actually invented several pieces of farming equipment the are used my many many people, (he doesn’t file patents, it would cost him more than they’re worth as something only has to be 2% different for it to be legally made and sold, so other people have mass produced at least one of his inventions, I think 2 though) he is so clever with the way machines work that the uncle that is a mechanical engineer at the top of his field (he actually got the highest possible mark you can get when he graduated high school, I think it’s similar to getting a perfect ACT score in the us) and when he can’t figure something out at work, he actually calls the uncle who is a mechanic (and dropped out of high school in year 10) to help him solve the problem, and believe me, every time without fail he’ll have it solved in an hour without ever having to write anything down. You can go to him and say I need a machine for xyz that will help to do abc and he’ll have it worked out in 24 hours with a sketch of what it will look like (no maths of anything written down other than a sketch and he’ll only do the sketch if he is having someone help him with the build or if someone wants a better understanding of how it will work) and he can have it built in as little as a week depending on the size and complexity of what he’s making, up to 6 weeks with the really huge stuff though (like buss size or bigger). Being dyslexic can absolutely make the road bumpier, but it always still there, you just have to find a way to get over (or around) the potholes on the way. Talking to a speech therapist may help, they often know a lot about dyslexia and have ways to help.

Good job catching this and acting on it. He is obviously bright and it would be sad to see him struggle unnecessarily.

You’re a good mom!!! Your children must have some very strong feet. When I saw Evy walking in the gravel barefoot like it didn’t even seem to hurt I couldn’t believe it. Also without shoes at the ballpark. Wow! The bottom of my feet have always been tender, especially outside. I would love to go barefoot at times.

She probably has tough feet from walking barefoot all the time. I did that as a kid. My feet would be black by the end of the day, 😂.

orton gillingham curriculums are great for dyslexia (all about reading is great and logic of English too) you were talking about a more creative way to learn I remember when Jessa showed Henry reading at like 3 and she said he did the sing spell read and write (or something like that ) curriculum. I know my kids memorized TONS of stuff to songs.
