Got to give a lot of credit for the Chimchar story one of the top 10 long-term Pokemon anime stories
@matthewkuscienko461611 ай бұрын
I personally would put it in the top 3 myself because of how emotional it was, which in my opinion is why it was SOOOOOOO satisfying to see it's conclusion with Ash prevailing against Paul and proving his worth as a Pokemon Master to be. I would even go so far as to say that it was this very story arc that was what got me to fall in love with Infernape at the end of the day

@@gh05tW What makes it even better is that of the Sinnoh starters, it’s the best set up for the Sinnoh Gym challenge: Monferno arrives at Lvl 14, meaning that on STAB types alone, it can actually beat Roark’s Rock types, not just Gardenia’s Grass types. You’ll need non-Sinnoh starters if you want an edge over the Ghost and/or Fighting Gyms, but Infernape still beats the Steel and Ice Gyms with its STAB attacks, plus Aaron’s Bug types in the Elite 4. In conclusion, I’d agree that it was boring to get 3 Fire/Fighters in a row, but when matching them up against the Gyms, it’s the best type combination in 2 of those 3 regions (at least of the native starters)

The way this video portrays it, it's wild how Pokemon had the balls to tell an abuse survivor story while keeping it PG
@matthewkuscienko461611 ай бұрын
That's true, but it was because they had the balls to tell such a story is why it was as great as it was. Sure, it was much darker and heavier than what you typically expect to see from the Pokemon anime, but that also gave it a more meaningful impact and made Ash's victory against Paul with the Infernape that Paul himself previously abused and released all the more cathartic in the end

@tomnorton42776 ай бұрын
@@user-gm4kv2my4u Yeah, giving Greninja an exclusive form without Mega Evolution was just blatant favouritism at its peak. Even Charizard getting two Mega's was somewhat excused by the fact that they did the same for Mewtwo. Still favouritism without a doubt but at least it was TWO fan favourites. Greninja was thrown headfirst into a vat of Main Character Syndrome to the point where he almost defeated Diantha's Gardevoir WITHOUT mastering Battle Bond. If the writers wanted to use Ash Greninja, they should have just made it a Mega Evolution like the others. It could have still been anime exclusive prior to Gen VII but at least give it a Mega Stone. Greninja isn't Legendary or Mythical, so it shouldn't have gotten special treatment. Infernape on the other hand went through hell and came out on the other side. Granted, his Blaze was confirmed to be unique due to its sheer intensity but it stayed true to the basic concept behind the Ability, which is that it only activates when he's exhausted. The writers didn't create an entire new form that breaks established rules of the franchise just for him. To this day, Diamond and Pearl is still the absolute peak of the Pokemon anime. Surprisingly, the only other series that got this mature was Sun and Moon. At first glance, that's the last series people would expect to tackle adult themes but Lillie's PTSD was heartbreakingly realistic and so was the series' handling of the deaths of loved ones.

If you remember the first gym fight between Ash and Blaine, Blaine would have certainly disqualified him and revoked his trainer license if they ever met. He threatened to have almost revoked Ash's license if he let Pikachu keep fighting Magmar after that Fire Blast. Blaine wouldn't let Paul slide at all
@MrMegaSuperDuperMe11 ай бұрын
Blaine is a cheater and a psychopath anyway. He forces his challengers to fight him over a pit of lava that only his Magmar can survive. That alone severely restricts the movements of his opponents. So his challengers have no choice but to surrender or risk the lives of their pokemon. And that's not all. Blaine then had his Magmar pull Charizard into the volcano without knowing if Charizard would survive or not. If he really cared about his challengers' pokemon, then he wouldn't have done that.

Paul is one my favorite rivals in the anime for a multitude of reasons, but specially because he demonstrates why you can't apply competitive pokémon logic in a setting where they are actual living beings.
@Notarobot10067 ай бұрын
I think you could, but you've gotta be smart about it. EV training you could still pull off, you'd just have to either cover a lot more ground looking for Pokemon willing to battle yours or bribe wild Pokemon to 'throw the match'/get in fights they know they'll lose in exchange for food and free Pokemon Center visits. As long as they're willingly showing up to fight and still gain something from it, you're on decent moral ground. IVs are a bit more complicated, though. You'd have to either catch-and-release a boatload of wild Pokemon until you find the ones you want or pedigree breed over many generations like people do with pet dogs. Edit: Though none of this 'litemode' competitive stuff really addresses the main problem, which is that Paul is a self-sabotaging asshole.

Infernape a better man than me in Journeys. I see Paul come to Oak's lab after my get back? Mach Punch straight to his jawline. Teach him to never come around while I'm here. But in all seriousness, great vid. This is probably the best plotline they've ever done for the anime (not saying I don't love the stuff after, this was just peak). I really like the analysis about Blaze near the end. With Paul, Chimchar wasn't battling. It was a hit sponge so even when Blaze did activate in the Roark battle, it was just ordinary. In this battle Infernape's not just absorbing damage. He's fighting and the damage he's received is a side effect of that. Blaze is something you can take advantage of, but it comes second to using Infernape's own power.

Honestly, I always saw the first Blaze against Roark as a sign that the writers hadn't fully fleshed out the idea yet. They certainly had a plan but hadn't completely worked out the kinks because that's literally the ONLY time Infernape's Blaze is shown to be normal. Every other time, it's as unique as Bond Phenomenon is to Greninja. But that's a nitpick. This is still a VERY strong contender for being the best arc the Pokemon anime has ever done. There are only 2 that give it any competition. The first is Dawn's arc when she goes through the losing streak until she wins the Wallace Cup. Fittingly, that happened in the same series and really helped to solidify Diamond and Pearl as the absolute peak of the anime. The second is Lillie regressing as she struggles to overcome her PTSD until her repressed memories are finally unlocked when she remembers that Silvally saved her.

That Zangoose-Seviper rivalry is no joke in real-life! The Indian grey mongoose and the Egyptian mongoose are the ones known to attack cobras. The mongoose is able to resist (not fully immune to) the venom of cobras because of a uniquely mutated receptor for a brain neurotransmitter called acetylcholine. The toxins in many snake venoms, including that of cobras, bind to the acetylcholine receptors of their victims, blocking nerve-muscle communications. The acetylcholine receptor in mongooses, like that in the snakes themselves, is slightly mutated so that the venom simply bounces off the muscle cells. Not to mention the mongoose is incredibly, blurringly swift and is capable of dodging the strikes, however multiple strikes can still kill them. Mongooses evolved in Africa in two subfamilies. The Herpestinae subfamily went globetrotting and comprises 23 living species found in southern Europe, Africa and Asia, whereas the Mungotinae comprises 11 species and stayed in Africa. The mongoose is a small animal but an excellent hunter, with keen senses of smell, sight and hearing, and remarkable reflexes. Mongooses are remarkably bright animals that have complex social structures and have even displayed simple tool use. Several species of mongoose routinely crack open eggs, nuts, or shelled creatures such as crabs or mollusks by dropping or throwing them on rocks.

I feel like this kinda story would be something N would be especially interested in hearing about. Of course he wouldn't be too thrilled to hear about Paul being such an abusive trainer, but he'd be that much more proud of Ash for taking in Chimchar when it was at its lowest, helping it heal, raising it properly, and being able to ultimately turn everything around and give Paul that giant wedge of humble pie he'd been begging for since his debut episode. And that's just one of several pokemon Ash had "rescued" from unfortunate circumstances, all to lead them to their peaks.

Paul was voiced by Julián Rebolledo (who was also Raul Passos in Max Payne 3 and did a bunch of stuff in Go Diego Go too) and you can definitely tell he was having a blast voicing him! Kalos was arguably the coolest series "overall", Unova, Alola, and Journeys have their moments, but this overarching plot with Ash vs Paul's battling style with Chimchar vs Elekid was the best written overall. It was so well built up over the DP anime. Gotta give a little credit to Electivire at the end though! After witnessing Monferno's evolution into Infernape along with its power and bravery, Electivire began to have a change of heart, finding respect for Infernape. So much so, that it was the reason Infernape had enough time to get back up in the finals. The ref was gonna call the match, but Electivire interrupted as he was trying to make the call, because it knew what Infernape was capable of and was aware that if anyone could get it to activate Blaze, it was Ash. It willingly threw away a win just to get a taste of what they were really cooking, and maybe even to show Paul that there was more to training Pokémon than just telling them to brute force everything. But in the end, Infernape really did have one of the best arcs the series has seen, and even got a nice epilogue in Journeys, where Paul returned for an episode and showed signs of change as he and Infernape were truly on good terms.
