Been working at old Jags for years and this looks to be in OK nick. My usual is to stick them on a ramp over winter and spend evenings cutting, painting and welding and with a bit of effort and a hand from my buddy now and then you can sort them out. Currently about to put my XK8 up for rear arches repair. Anyone prepared to keep these cars growling gets a thumbs up from me 👍

These are excellent cars. I have owned two XJ6 cars and each did 190K before I traded them in for the next one. Bodywork is the usual thing and the fine wires to the headlights along the inside of the engine compartment do corrode and vanish. Why they made the wires so fine is beyond me. I currently have an XKR , but still have a longing for the days I was driving the XJ6 (eleven years each car) with the passenger capacity. The alloy wheels are probably worth what you paid for the car. Well done sir. Many people would baulk at that amount of welding to be done, but that is why the car was available at that price?
@MarksWheels14 күн бұрын
Thanks for your comment. Yes that's why the car was so cheap. Well that and the fact it didn't run lol
@Munter23 күн бұрын
This car is definitely worth saving though an MOT tester will be using something a little more substantial than a finger prod and a finger nail to assess the amount of rot on the underside. It will take many cereal packets for templates (better than cardboard boxes) many sanding discs etc etc not to mention many hours of welding, but once finished you’ll have a great car. Please keep us all updated on your progress.
@MarksWheels2 күн бұрын
First assessment in an MOT is finger and thumb. No point using anything more substantial on this as the rot is so far gone. It'll all need cutting out before welding commences so the big tools will come out then. Thanks for commenting. Plenty more videos on this to come

@geoffreysmith319611 күн бұрын
This old XJ is more than worth saving. The mechanicals were never a major issue, the electricals can be rewired with commonly available harnesses, and the rust is rather minor and can all be repaired. Mind you, my perspective is that of someone living in the northern US or Canada, where vehicles dissolve shockingly fast due to road salt use in winter. The worst part of this car is the sad chrome mouldings covering the wheel arches. Who knows what horrors hide beneath them. These were regarded as pathetic upscale fakery back in the '80's when they first appeared, and have only become tackier with age. Get rid of that bogus crap. It doesn't belong on yours, or anyone else's, ride. It's a devaluation item.

Sorry to hear that. I have driven a few of the later XJ's and they really are lovely cars.
@battlebbot13 күн бұрын
Without a lot of work that car is dangerous to drive on the road. The area where the panhard rods mount on the chassis, is internally a multi skin box section. What tends to happen is the internal skins rot away, which drastically reduces the strength of a very important structural part. They can be repaired, but the only way to do it is to cut away the rotten section completely and replace it with a good one from a scrap car. That has had some thin steel sheet welded over the top of the rotten area. What happens when the inside of the box section is rotted, is the panhard rod mount tears out of the chassis, meaning you will then have rear wheel steering, which is extremely dangerous. That can be restored to a good standard but probably looking at 200 hours + labour, and trying to find panhard rod box sections, which arent completely rotten. With paint cost is going to be far more than its ever going to be worth. The electrical systems of them is a nightmare, and sorting out faults often involves taking out the complete dash. When I worked on them when they were new a couple of techs from Browns Lane, spent some 3 days trying to sort out electrical problems under warranty. That car is scrap, and a very bad idea to spend any time or money on it. Get it advertised and take what you can for it.
@MarksWheels12 күн бұрын
Thanks for your input. I think i'm going to start cutting ad see just how much worse it gets but breaking for parts is still an option
@mrdainase12 күн бұрын
@@MarksWheels First, (and being a bit of a pedant to the comment above), they're radius arms not panhard rods. Repair panels should be available from the likes of SNG Barrat and it's not second mortgage time either. A good welder can make that area good and strong again. One bit to note is Jag bodies tend to have little panels and reinforcers dotted about as Bob Knight could be a bugger for tinkering with the design and they were cheaper to add in rather than re-do an entire panel.
@battlebbot12 күн бұрын
@@MarksWheels Cut away the poorly done patches close to the panhard rod mountings and check the inner structure. If the inner structure is rotten, the car will need repairing properly to prevent the panhard rods tearing out of the shell.

@ivegotelvis357713 күн бұрын

@MarksWheels12 күн бұрын
True but i still want it to be safe.
@ivegotelvis357712 күн бұрын
