Beds are such a simple minecraft item. They serve a basic but very useful purpose, and have been in the game for well over a decade now. But, could they possibly have ruined minecraft?

I think night should only be hard for the first night. The warden is the modern "night", mojang said so themselves. At one point mojang toyed around with the idea of a blood moon, based on the one featured in terraria but seeing as that was 4 years ago, I'd say it's not ever coming

Yeah but beds are a band-aid solution. What Minecraft really needs is more incentives to explore. Also more difficulty options: Maybe instead of just increasing damage on hard mode, mobs like spiders, wither skeletons, and piglins could move faster than the player. And maybe spiders would be able to jump far and place temporary cobwebs on the player if they hit successfully. And maybe skeletons would be able to randomly spawn with tipped arrows. And maybe creepers could explode at the player's last seen location if they lose sight of the player (But all the blocks they break would drop)

I think Minecraft's biggest problem is not having enough terrifying mobs or difficult structures. Modern Minecraft could regain these elements if more Overworld monsters were added. The warden was a step in the right direction, but something needs to exist above ground. Either a new mob must exist or much, much more dangerous structures need to be around. Like illager lands with numerous pillager patrols with ravagers and all kinds of bizarre mobs made by illager experiments to roam. If Minecraft is to be challenging again, there NEEDS to be a mob or structure that is a threat to ALL players, not just new players.

It brings up a weird, kind of icky feeling for the addition of beds to be considered “ruining” the game. When beds added a respawn point, I felt like I could get a breath of fresh air. I was able to explore farther, rather than feel tethered to my spawn point. I was way too nervous to go out and about and look for a fun new place because I knew I’d never be able to settle down there. After beds were made into respawn points it was different. If I got a crap spawn, I got to move and try something else, waiting out the night in huts and caves until I found wherever I wanted to settle in. Waiting out the night did not go away. It lessened, sure, but you don’t always get lucky. And if you want to explore before creating a big base? Forget about it. Setting up a bed in a carved out hut isn’t worth anything once you die and spawn back in the middle of nowhere. It may have ruined a survival challenge, but Minecraft has different modes for a reason. It’s meant to be a broader, sandbox/exploration-based game. With a survival mode.

The main counterpoint I have with the argument of beds ruining the game is also found in those clips of those early minecraft lets plays. Many players waited literally half of their game time blocked inside of their base doing either nothing, or going back down to their mines for an indeterminate amount of time. The night being so hostile without a way to mitigate it has involuntarily decentivised exploring the surface until you get the armor and tools to trivialise it anyways. There is another more pressing point, which lines up with Minecraft's current game design philosophy, but it is moreso looking back in hindsight rather than something I could realistically have at the time: Dying when you are far away from the world spawn feels like it's permanent. Tbf it is what many players face when doing hardcode playthroughs nowdays. However, when the default classic mode of an open sandbox game increases in difficulty simply because you are doing what the game wants you to do, it feels like a trick. It is like a more long winded version of those troll games that were big in the 2010s. One singular mistake or misstep, and most players probably don't have the motivation to continue that world. As a result, most players hover around the world spawn, barely venturing out unless it is underground to look for more diamonds. This significantly would hurt the health of the game, especially with its shift to be more exploration and resource management focused.

Sorry, but where is this late game difficulty? By late game you have more calories than cobblestone, are so armoured up that creeper blasts tickle, you can skip 1000's of blocks of difficult terrain with zero chance of harm to your person. And you no longer need to mine, you just go to an xp farm and bathe in XP for 20 seconds or buy a bulk stack of xp bottles from a villager you tortured via zombification to get good deals.

@@tehbeard There is still stuff like the Wither and Warden which can be dangerous for some advanced players. As far as travel goes, you don’t have to use that fancy armor if you don’t want to. Nothing in game forces you to use powerful armor. You can put whatever challenges on your world you want. But it doesn’t make sense to make everyone abide by them because a lot of people don’t like worlds where you can’t explore without a ton of danger. Making farms is a choice. No one is forced to do it. Same goes for trading with villagers. If you want a harder game, just put restrictions on yourself.

I mean, Peaceful difficulty is a thing. Which beds pretty much turn the game into anyways before you get Diamond gear. Which then leads into the whole topic of there being no mobs that can reliably beat a player with Diamond gear, aside from bosses or whatever the Warden is counted as (which the devs don't even want you to fight against). There are many options to lower the difficulty or decrease tedium, such as settings like "Keep Inventory" that you can check upon starting a world to completely prevent you from ever losing progress, but there are no options to increase difficulty aside from playing Hard mode, which only slightly bumps up enemy damage numbers. Once you get Diamonds, you've pretty much beaten the game. You _could_ play with self-imposed challenges, but, for me at least, having to increase the difficulty by taking away options (or even the ability to _play the file at all_ as is done with Hardcore mode) is more annoying than anything. I'm all for convenience features, like beds, Elytras, and the Keep Inventory option mentioned above that make the gameplay more streamlined and less tedious, but there should also be features added that give you the option to challenge yourself even while using said convenience features.

Hi thanks for using my footage! Minecraft started out as creative mode, then indev mode - a limited map (my footage), then infdev - unlimed map, then alpha - biomes added, then beta - beds added. Minecraft worlds kept getting bigger and bigger as the game was developed. The game started with no biomes at all. Only the grass area. There really wasn't much reason to leave the spawn area. The biomes update came out before beds did! Biomes was the same update that added the Nether. So if you wanted to start your game in a biome you didn't spawn in, you'd have to travel to it. Nether highways were used a lot to travel back from the spawn to your base. Not being able to change your spawn point was rough. As minecraft kept getting bigger with more reasons to leave your starting area, it was tough having a set spawn. Changing your spawn point was the best part of the introduction of beds, and the original reason for beds. No longer on your worlds did you have to leave a trail of torches to the spawn point in case you died at night. You could just respawn in your base! That was a huge deal. And at the time, it wasn't so easy to get wool. There were no shears and no animal breeding! You killed the sheep to get your wool. It was a completely differently balanced game and, depending on the luck of your spawn, beds could be hard to come by and gave a huge reward. Great video, I very much enjoyed it. I think when hunger was added was another huge change for the direction of minecraft. IIRC hunger was just a little bit before beds. Honestly so much changed in Beta it's crazy to think about.

This brought back a lot of memories of my first world that I had dozens of different players in at various times. I think the limit was 6 people at once, at one point. At least on the early days of it being on 360, so people were taking turns playing in my world. We had difficulty finding wool because animal mobs didn't seem to spawn as often and like you pointed out, you had to kill them to get them to drop items, and sometimes they dropped nothing. The odds of them dropping nothing was pretty dang high. After being in the world long enough and having multiple major cities, meat started to become a lot more scarce because the animals rarely spawned. Certain types of wood also started getting harder to come by, because saplings rarely dropped and we'd be using up everything we could find. The bed being a spawn point is probably the best thing the game has added other than the updates that increased loot drops. Beds may be able to skip darkness, but when you're playing in a server with multiple people, not everyone is carrying a bed around with them or near one when darkness falls so it's still a relevant part of the gaming experience.

I can say as someone who has recently been playing through all of these old versions as part of an LP, not having beds was a huge hassle. It made the game much harder practically forcing you inside or underground every 10 minutes as night fell. I have to say though that although the addition of beds made the game somewhat easier, it also unlocked far more potential for creative and ambitious creations. The game was made far more enjoyable and was more like Classic minecraft, before the survival aspect was added, almost fusing them and finding a good middle ground between the two because at that point people were still playing classic minecraft to get away form the restrictions of survival at the time.

Those items do not grow on trees; they are the reward for the player's hard work to make their gameplay a little bit more convenient. I've made a video on this once. edit: typo

Ya to be honest, as somebody with more than 10 years of game time on Minecraft, love survival mode, I’ve actually never obtained the elytra. I’ve slain the end dragon many times, never figured out what to do after that I guess? Also never messed with the armor enchant stuff, currently hosting a realm where I hope to do all of that. These additions have definitely kept the game fresh more than deteriorated it I think.

this! people forget that not everyone plays the same. i have been playing minecraft for damn near half my life now and i only ever killed the enderdragon a few times and it was on creative and just for fun. i dont ever visit the end to “finish” the game bc i never feel a need to and its not my style. hence why i dont use elytras. the thing about all these features and updates is minecraft never forces players to do anything, besides sleeping to avoid phantoms. besides that, it is a sandbox game in which you can do anything. and i love that the game rewards players so well for exploring and discovering new things. not everyone wants to be stressing about getting thru the night, and just bc to some it “removes the challenge”, some people dont wanna play that way. doesnt make the game less fun or challenging. plus when players choose to stay awake and get thru the night, they are rewarded with mob drops from killing monsters until day breaks. i dont believe there is one singular thing that ruins minecraft for me, as for most things in the game you can choose to do something or choose not to, and it doesnt take away from the actual gameplay too much.

I think the elytra was a major reason for most of the problems you cited, such as the vastness of a world. While beds maybe contributed somewhat to them, I certainly don't think they were the main issue. Rather, when I compare the start of a new world to that world after I have a bed, I enjoy the latter much more. Waiting out the night used to be the thing I liked least. I think maybe new mechanics surrounding beds could be added, like maybe having only a single bed that will reset your respawn point, and sleeping bags that will allow you to sleep but not reset your respawn point.

Honestly, playing minecraft with required nights would be interesting. But two things: 1) Phantoms would be really unnecessary 2) Villagers not stocking for half the gameplay would be annoying If both issues would be fixed, I'm down. Also, setting the respawn point is strictly positive.

Man this brings me back to the good old days. I wish Minecraft would create a legacy game mode, where there are new features, but ores are rarer, there is no f3 menu, no enchants, stronger mobs, ect. I deel like something along the lines of this would be a lot more popular than chat reporting
@cucler6718
@cucler6718 Жыл бұрын
sounds like overall a terrible idea though, you can achieve the same just by increasing the damage of mobs, f3 isnt related, also i dont think it'd be popular for the right reasons, it wouldnt be popular because its hard, it would be popular because nostalgia, and, few people actually feel this towards old versions of the game, first, not all players that have played them feel this, second, not all players have played those old versions.

We had brightness on moody (didn't know how to change it xd), thought minecarts were the meta transportation, and most importantly, we did not know what a "bed" was. We would build underground dirt huts, fight to the death, and sometimes we would chicken out and close the door as a creeper is following us. Good times...

Without any depth? You can't heal by ignoring it, it enforces survival and makes mobs more threatening rather than taking a bit of DMG and insta healing full health by munching steak like you used to before. Now you NEED to have hunger maxed out if you want to heal, otherwise you'll pay the price for it when you get jumped by mobs. It forces you to stop fighting too rather than going Rambo 24/7, make strategic decisions to stop and top off your hunger in anticipation of a lot of DMG, etc. You need it to sprint as well. It's 100% a necessary evil that forces you to take a break to address, otherwise you'll just run in a straight line beating the game in a day and you'll get bored before you know it. Hunger, alongside many other things, without you realizing, is what psychologically makes the things you accomplish in the game feel better than if you had less limitations. For example, building a structure in survival vs creative. In survival it's harder, more annoying, you need to collect all the resources, spend more time building, etc. Yet the majority of players find more fufillment because of those things than creative. All successful games have features that achieve this effect. Hunger is a vital part of the game and without it, the survival aspect would take a serious hit. Could it use improving? Yes, like making certain foods and diets reward you in some way. Though, the same could be said about melee combat being too simplistic and you essentially only use sword for it, bows and crossbows having rng crit values, totems (they actually remove depth), irons overabundance (making it extremely to find and get a full set of armor, essentially making you unkillable relative to where you were before it and it's so easy to acquire that it makes Leather, a worse armor, take more time and not worth considering), shields (extremely easy to acquire for the effect of recieving essentially 0dmg from arrows, creepers, etc by holding a button down), village trading system being way too exploitive from an early stage (so much so that it used to be abused in speedruns), repair system with anvils being garbage and requiring a workaround (renaming) to make work, Elytras making EVERY method of transportation outdated (even though it's late game, there should be late game ways to make older transportation methods better) and they remove depth as well, "wow you put on some wings with mending and fireworks and now you're a literal God flying at mach speeds throughout the map where mobs, fire, water, etc can't reach you." Anyways, you can word most things to sound like they don't add depth and even remove it. Saying hunger adds 0 depth is ignorant. If hunger irks you so much, download a mod or enable a data pack that auto eats for you, improves hunger, or removes the necessity to eat. But MANY players enjoy cultivating a farm, breeding, growing crops, harvesting and culling, naming animals, etc. You're not the main audience, proved by your presence in this video. The majority is the unspoken who don't go onto vids like we do, and they enjoy the game as is. I know my gf loves to farm, breed animals, mess around, etc with them. There's also a mod that addresses every problem in MC. Don't have access to mods? Unfortunate, because waiting for Mojang to address it all is going to take centuries and they'll probably spend years adding wasps first.
@fortnitesexman
@fortnitesexman Жыл бұрын
@@RemedieX the game isn't about survival anymore it's about farms, building, etc etc all of which are made severely more tedious by the existence of hunger it doesn't add difficulty to the game, it doesn't cause you to take a detour to gather recources after setting up a basic farm, it just forces you to stop for a bit before being able to play the game again, they're like fucking ads the old system had depth in the sense that you were sacrifising a significant portion of your inventory for more food, which would be an AWFUL system now because the inventory is already too small for what the game is about, but it was great back then i think removing hunger and giving food farms some other use would be a major improvement to the game, then they can remove durability aswell since it's the same problem, not really putting a strain on your resources and just wasting your time i will say that hunger does add a bit of depth over no hunger tho, maybe adding a few minutes spent on getting two animals in a fenced area and you needing to choose between the white meat and the black meat
