Super informative, as always! I personally don't mind sponsored videos at all (as long as they clearly state it's sponsored). Especially hauls, because the person can't really give their opinion if they haven't read it yet so what is there to lie about? I've seen BookTubers haul a book they wouldn't normally pick up because they were paid to, and that was the first time I'd ever heard of it and I ended up LOVING it. It is nice to be exposed to things outside of everyone's normal comfort zone sometimes.

EXACTLY hauls are the most commonly sponsored videos, and it's literally impossible to lie about the majority of information they give you! i have been recommended SOOOO many great books from sponsorships that i may not have known about otherwise! they really are an asset to the community

I really didn't care too much about why you guys received money, not to be rude, I still find you guys such a lovely part of the youtube community and I support the ones I love however I can, but I never made a big deal about it. You guys actually deserve all the deals, books, monetary compensation, etc. you get. I mean don't we all want to do what we love and love what we do? Isn't it awesome to make money off of something you simply love to do? Shouldn't we all work towards that and not tear down those who achieved it? I won't support creators if I don't like them/trust them or don't like what they stand for. I also like to make sure where my money is going, and if people are keeping me in the dark about that how can I support you? Thank you Emma for the video as it did clear up lots of things, I always thought of you as a great person for being so honest yet so nice.

I already do trust the BookTubers I'm subscribed to, so it's not a problem in my opinion, if they are sponsored by a publisher or not. BookTubers put so much effort into their videos, why shouldn't they get paid? Even if it's just a little bit? BookTubers painstakingly edit their video, a little reward is sometimes nice. Great video, Emma. This was really great! Thanks for the honesty.

I love this video so much. It is so nice to see someone being so honest and open about this topic. The fact that you would even make this video (despite the fact that so many other people don't) is why I love your channel so much ❤️ Tbh I don't care if someone is doing a sponsored video, some booktubers put so much work into their videos and if they make money through sponsorships from it, then cool. The only time it kind of bothers me is when I see a specific sponsorship/ book being shown in (what feel like) everyones book hauls or pictures on their instagram, but then I don't see one of them actually read the book. Thats when the sponsorships feels a little wrong to me.
@emmmabooks
@emmmabooks 8 жыл бұрын
awh thank you! that really means a lot to me hmm that's actually something i haven't thought about! i mean of course i know it's common in the community to haul books and not read them, but i never thought about how it looks with sponsorships! i guess it kind of comes down to the whole "would they have read this on their own argument" because there's no requirement to read it if it was just sent for a haul. such an interesting point! :)

I just love you! you approach topics that a lot of people neglect and that is so considerate of you. I personally think that Booktubers should actually get paid. They are the best part of youtube and the most influential. I hate when people complain about them getting paid it's like they just want to recieve and they don't want them to get anything in return! Getting paid is the least thing that Booktubers deserve after they take precious time of their day to share everything about books with us. And it's not like that's gonna affect anyone badly! .. Ok that was way too long LOL. I just wanted to express my opinion.

Thanks so much for making this Emma! It's not so much that I am bothered by booktubers making money (a lot of them spend so much time making great videos-editing, adding music, inserting texts/pictures-that it's great that they are able to make money) but the whole behind the scenes stuff with sponsorships and affiliate links were always confusing to me because no one really talks about it. But now that you made this video it really just clears the smoke and shows that it's not a big deal. I get that money is a personal matter and some people want to keep it private so I'm so glad that that you decided to make this video because I'm sure it wasn't easy for you.

This is such a good, comprehensive video. I've been blogging and BookTubing for over 2 years, and people always wonder how I can say that it's my job (it's really my side hustle) -- and wonder if I only do it for the money/free books. It has nothing to do with the money -- I'd be doing it either way! Thanks, as always, for clearing this up to viewers and sharing the truth. You are an inspiration, Emma!

I've always never cared how much KZbinrs make. I really appreciate your work and making videos is HARD. The time that it takes to film, edit, post, and do everything else for the video takes forever and you should be compensated. We don't pay for these videos but we still consume them regularly and expect them every week. I appreciate everything booktubers and other youtubers do and I personally try to watch ads all the way through and like up every video in hope that I may give you something for all your hard work. I love that you're so honest and just want to clear things up using reason. I feel like so many people make assumptions like "oh they're getting paid which means they're opinion is biased" Like... do you really think they'd read an entire book and make a biased review just because a book was sent to them? You have to like and trust that what they're saying is their truth, otherwise why would you care to hear their opinion and watch the video?

And honestly i dont see an issue with bigger booktubers getting sponsored. Its how the community grows because that in turn helps the booktuber buy books and to discuss them and continue to put out content. Emma, This was incredibly informative and helpful. Having done some research on how to make money on any kind of KZbin channel (not just booktube) I was familiar with some of the terminology and money-making avenues, but certainly not everything you discussed. A particularly helpful clarification was the word "sent" vs. "sponsored" as a clue to whether a publisher is monetarily compensating the booktuber, and it's good to know that publishers are clear in their contracts about their level of input---it seems like the truly see booktube as an asset and have no interest in exploiting reviewers in this still very new medium of videos, they care about cultivating a relationship with the booktube community and that's heartening. Best, Joe

thank you so much!!! yes, definitely knowing what to look for in verbal disclosure is a great help!! every publisher i've worked with is SUPER respectful of booktuber honesty, so if someone is actually lying in their videos, that's the booktuber's problem; not the person they are working for. i agree! i think of it 100% as an asset because i know there are a ton of books that came from sponsored videos that i am so happy to have read!

I really appreciate that you made this video, and put so much thought into it. It helps both viewers and other creators to understand how booktube works. I understand when you say that not receiving commission from affiliate codes or links means that you get nothing back, but this does still help your channel in other ways. You say that you're not getting anything out of it other than what they send you, but you have to think about it from a business point of view. Even if you don't get that commission, the company sees the kind of traffic you can bring to them, and responds accordingly. If you bring a lot of traffic, they're more likely to work with you in the future. If it's a larger/more popular company, and they give you products to use/review/show on your channel, this has the potential (if you do use them) to bring more people to your channel because views are interested in those products, giving you higher visibility for even larger companies that may want to initiate a sponsorship with you. Of course, this depends on the product/source and their appeal, as well as the people who would subscribe because of seeing said content-- which could be more or less. I also think it's fine that booktubers take on sponsorships. If a publisher reaches out to them, that's awesome! It helps me as a viewer because I get to know all the pertinent information, and I get to hear what that booktuber has to say about it. It's perfectly fine to me, as long as it's specified when it's a sponsorship. The only thing that bothers me is when publishers send out ARCs to a ton or people (booktubers and others) without asking whether the booktuber intends to read it or not. Many times I see booktubers haul ARCs and then never actually read them, or have no interest in reading them, or only read them long after the release (negating the purpose of the ARC). Now, I do think giving ARCs to booktubers is a good idea, and should continue, but I think it should be something more along the lines of the publisher giving an ARC if the booktuber wants it, with the stipulation that it should (not necessarily has to) be read before the release date, or perhaps if they don't want to read it, if they'll host a giveaway for the ARC. If that makes sense. There's probably some behind the scenes stuff that I don't know that makes all this null...

You're always so professional, and you put so much effort into your videos, your research really shows through, I don't understand why people would give you backlash. But please know that I really really appreciate you letting viewers and smaller BookTubers behind the scenes and shedding light on topics that most people don't want to talk about! This video has been so helpful, I've always been curious about this topic and now I understand way better how it works from the ads to the sponsorships and I think that youtubers should get something from making vids as you spend time and put effort into making them so it's your right to be paid for that!! Seriously thank you so much for creating such an informative video. It's something that I didn't think too much about because I didn't know any details. By providing this information, even if it's only from your perspective, allows for such a good start to creating a greater understanding and open discussion to move forward about those who may have an issue with youtubers who get paid to make videos.

Thank you for this video, Emma! I feel like I knew a lot of this already (except for details about sponsorships) and it was SO informative for the rest of the community and people who watch booktube! I also don't think many understand how hard it is to meet quotas for affiliate links to even get paid in the first place (for example, Book Depository payment)

It's good to have a clear view on this now. I think we're used to associate sponsorships with tons of money, while that seems not to be the case at all in the BookTube community lol. Personally I don't mind sponsored videos as much, but I am more hesitant in my enthusiasm. For example, I've seen sponsored reviews where the book got a 3 star rating (or something in that range), but the negative aspects are only very briefly mentioned and the positive aspects are given the priority. I just approach those kinds of videos differently I guess, but if it's a book that I'm interested in I'll probably still get something out of that video.

Thank you so much for this video, it REALLY cleared up a lot of things for me! One major thing that used to really bug me was when someone would do a tag or a haul, or any video where the item being sent from a company is the main focus, they'd say "this video is being sponsored by so & so", right away it would make me feel like they're making the video JUST for that item and to make money. I don't have a problem with making money, but it makes me think that if they weren't sent that item, they wouldn't even make the video. It's like, rather than think of ideas to incorporate that item into their regular videos, they're making that video JUST for that item. I hope that makes sense. After a while it feels like every video I watch is just a long advertisement, and the people making the video don't care because hell, they're getting free stuff and money. Of course, now I realize how wrong and unfair it was for me to think that. But there are many booktubers whose opinions I really value (you being one of them =D), and now that I know how things really work, I feel A LOT comfortable. Again, thank you!

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS!!!!!! I've been pretty curious about this topic as a booktuber myself, not that it's a big deal to me. I think if booktubers are passionate about what they're doing then they definitely should be making money. But that also shouldn't be the sole motivator for them, like you said. That's not what I'm motivated by, I just like listening to cool people talk about books and talking about them myself. lol. I love your pure honesty and the fact that you called out these people with ridiculous theories. Like come on people, we're not in an episode of Pretty Little Liars here, there's no conspiracies. lol. Thank you so much for posting this video, I really appreciate watching and learning from you.

This is very informative. I do agree that I do not understand on how can people judge people they only see on youtube. Opinions are opinions - there is no right, wrong, truth, lies. Besides, book popularity depends on readers much more than publishers and marketing - which includes booktubes. As for the monetary compensation whatsoever, I believe that if you exert effort on something there is value to it, whether to satisfy the viewers or make a deal with companies, and most booktube videos are done free anyways. The amount of time in editing, taking videos, reading books and researching if need be is a "work" in itself, so no one has the right judge you for getting some cash or less so, make assumptions.

I just had a dejavu with a section of your video! O.o it was strange. Anyway, I can't believe this is an issue? I mean, if a company wants to pay a booktuber for promoting a book than that's there decision and I mean... that's how these things work. Not only for booktubers but all big channels about anything get paid by companies to have their products promoted. It's something so normal that until your video I had no idea booktubers were frowned upon for it. Still, super informative. I loved this vid (and I love your shelf). I do think that if you promote something that a company asked you to, you should get paid for it. (again, that''s how it works!) Awesome channel! =)

Thank you for making this video Emmma! This was very helpful for people who just started BookTube or are like me and want to start a channel. I really want to start up my own KZbin channel soon not only talking about books but also talking and reviewing movies and tv shows. I'm not going to start up a channel because I want money or anything but it would be nice to be able to get paid to talk about or do things I love who doesn't want that. I have always wondered how BookTubers and KZbinrs in general get paid so thanks for breaking it down. :)

You should definitely have the option and ability to receive compensation in exchange. Thank you for all the information.

Awesome video! Love your candor and appreciate the comprehensive explanation. I think as a viewer I'm totally fine with sponsored videos because it means who I like to watch can do more videos because they are getting paid for it! As a BookTuber I also am for sponsorships for the simple fact it gives a BookTuber access to things (content/books/information) they wouldn't otherwise have in addition to being paid for it. I still think it's important for passion for books to be the #1 reason someone has a channel, but why not make it profitable too :)

Lately there's been this new function on YT called Superchats for when people do live videos. I've only seen it on the channel of a film vlogger, but I guess for anyone who does stuff live on booktube it might work, too. The way it works is basically this: He does his show and people can send in these superchats in the live chat board for a little money (from 2$ upwards, up to the viewer) with questions that he then answers. I didn't count but I estimate he gets between 20-40 of these superchats per show (which he does every day) worth between 2$ and 10$ so that does add up. It's hard to know for sure how much money he makes per show off that because many people send these in different currencies (the channel has a pretty international following) and I also don't know how much of a cut YT keeps. But it seems to be pretty lucrative - and makes the channel more interactive in the process - so I'm just throwing that out here :)

Emma, thank you for always making such wonderful and informative videos! ❤️ I personally don't mind if videos are sponsored as long as it's clearly stated in the video or description box. There have been books that have been mentioned as a sponsorship in videos that I probably wouldn't have heard about if it weren't for it. Sponsorships can be a great way to make a book more well known, which in turn gets more people to read it and possibly have it become a new favorite!

Great video as always and very informative and eloquent! I think it's totally okay for any creator to be able to make money of their content, and I'm personally totally okay with any kind of sponsorship as l trust the booktubers I watch that they'll be honest, which I truly believe at least most of them are! Also I personally don't care if somebody gets "rich" or if they only get a dollar but I think it's ridiculous how some people seem to think that booktubers get crazy rich from sponsorships etc. I mean that's just not how it works, sure there is money involved but not ten thousands of dollars and if you're on booktube for the sole purpose of money then please leave, we don't want you here :/ Loved this video, great topic as always and girl you SLAYIN!!

I personally wouldn't do a sponsored video, but I don't judge anyone who does. The money's got to come from somewhere, and I'm sure even the biggest channels among us have put way more money into their content than they've earned from it. Since I come from a reviewing background (and as I still consider that my #1 role), I don't wish for there to be even the perception, however accurate or inaccurate, that my opinions or my endorsements are for sale. But booktubers who are cool with doing that and are entirely open and honest with their viewers about it - hey, more power to you!

most booktube sponsorships happen when the publisher reaches out to the booktuber, if you're looking to work with publishers, you would have to contact them directly if they don't contact you. there isn't a website where you can apply for bookish sponsorships yet :)

I disagree with the idea that we aren't starting a BookTube channel to make money. I mean maybe some people. However, I think a lot of people are looking to make some money off BookTube, and there is no reason to be ashamed of that. I hope that I can grow my community to the level of having free books, sponsored videos, speaking gigs, a book subscription club, and write a book myself. I can't do that without building an audience and establishing authority on the topics I cover though. Neither of those mention the ad revenue and affiliate marketing opportunities that are there as well.
