🫁 Learn how to Breathe with Neil on Zoom: www.thebuteykomethod.com
In this video, I share my personal story about recovering from burnout using a breathing technique called Breathe Light from the Buteyko Method. I talk about what it felt like to burn out, and how by trying lots of approaches, and persisting with Buteyko Breathing, I was able to heal my body and mind, and get my life back.

Great video! I had the same journey with Buteyko, but back in 2005. My asthma cleared up, allergies, snoring, stuffy nose, occasionally blocked eustaschian tube - all of these things cleared up. In 2006 I trained to become a teacher. Buteyko is very subtle, simple to explain but not simple to do. Breathe less! Relaxtion is key to productive reduced breathing. As Alex says there are a number of other guidelines to follow and things you can do to bring breathing under control and into your conscious awareness. Becoming 'breath aware' is one of the many gifts of a Buteyko practice.

Ive discovered increased energy and emotional calm throughout the day from just a singke session of deep long breathing exercise as well as wim Hoff method, yet they seem to contradict each other. And now today I learned about breathing less using buteyko. I'm going to learn more but I'm curious why they all are so effective yet different in practice.

@@sibaroochi A deep dive into respiratory physiology will help to understand why hyperventilation (Hof) and the opposite (Buteyko) can both have positive therapeutic effects. It depends on the health of the person engaging in either. Generally speaking I would say people who would greatly benefit from Buteyko probably shouldn't try Hof.

I was interested in Buteyko Breathing many years ago and took an in-person course, but eventually gave up the practice. This is an excellent video which explains WHY it didn't work well enough for me to continue (it became just another stressor.) STILL think there are huge benefits for me to reap with this approach though. I think this is one of the best (and most honest) videos I've seen about any healing modality and I look forward to exploring your channel. THANK YOU!

I can't comment re any specific health conditions without going through the intake process. But typically a good place to start is with the small breath holds (don't pinch the nose if you have rhinitis) and muscle relaxation as these are both very gentle. Wishing you all the best 🙏🏻

Hi Vivian, Welcome to the world of Buteyko breathing! It's great to hear that you're keen on integrating these techniques into your busy life. The practice regimen depends a lot on your history, health and goals and that's why I would recommend working Buteyko practitioner if you can (I have courses and a 1-2-1 offering here: www.thebuteykomethod.com/). Having said that, this is an example of an Asthma based programme which might give you some ideas to explore: www.thebuteykomethod.com/buteyko-breathing/buteyko-asthma-daily-programme. Walking with your mouth closed, and many small breath holds in sets of 5 minutes are also great ways to start to bring buteyko into a busy life. Hope that helps🙏

This video is what really started my fascination in the world of breathing and what exactly happens when we practice these types of methods. From all the research I’ve continued to do since then, what I’ve found is that the main healing component to all of this is the levels of carbon dioxide in your body and how it builds up. This leads me to my question: Anders Olsson has a machine called the carbohaler. It basically allows you to breathe with regulated amounts of co2. Wouldn’t this theoretically take someone out of a sympathetic-dominant state and allow their parasympathetic side to kick in through this biohacking method which in turn will heal their limbic system followed by everything else?

Great video. I subscribed and look forward to learning more about the breath. As a yoga teacher, I have been using and sharing humming breath (bhramari) for years. I am curious what your thoughts are about ujjayi breathing? This is a technique I have been using for decades where you make a slight whisper sound in the throat.
@thebuteykomethod
@thebuteykomethod 5 ай бұрын
Thanks for sharing!! The most important thing when teaching breathing (even during asanas) is to make sure that people aren't over breathing or breathing heavily. Ujjayi is fine when practised correctly, but people often breathe more heavily when using it. As you are a yoga teacher, I highly recommend the book Restoring Prana by Robin Rothenberg. She's a breathing expert and yoga therapist.

@@caffeinated936 Pranayama taught correctly can have similar benefits. But you must breathe lightly, quietly, gently with a mild air hunger. Most of the time, pranayama is taught incorrectly in the west. For more information on how to do it right - check out Robin Rothenbergs "Restoring Prana". Hope that helps 🙏

Hey @stec3942, welcome aboard. If you already have air hunger all the time, then it's good to start with nasal breathing 24/7, mouth taping at night (e.g. myotape) and small breath holds: kzbin.info/www/bejne/kIvZmH6wrriCnbcsi=acapinlmT6dfey68. These should all help to start reducing the general air hunger before you approach the breathe light exercise. If you need more support, you can get in tough through my website: www.thebuteykomethod.com/. . Wishing you all the best 🙏🏻

How does this method do with people with Hypertension and how quick before they see results?
@thebuteykomethod
@thebuteykomethod 4 ай бұрын
It was actually Dr Buteyko's experiences of reducing his own Hypertension symptoms by changing his breathing that led to the discovery of the Buteyko method. However, I would definitely check with your Doctor that they feel comfortable with you doing breathing exercises. Buteyko breathing can help to regulate the nervous system and improve the barroreflex (the body's ability to manage blood pressure). How long it takes depends quite a lot on the individual, but you would normally start to see small changes within a few weeks.
@Sophie7377

How often and how long for should you do the exercises?
@thebuteykomethod
@thebuteykomethod 4 ай бұрын
Great question! For the Breathe Light exercise, It depends a lot on your body. For someone in generally good heath, we would have them doing 2-4 rounds of 4 minutes (with a 30-60 sec break in between), 3 times a day. Plus some small breath holds to manage symptoms and a 20-minute nasal breathing walk. But we tend to adapt all of this to the individual so that we can get the "dosage" right.

Stress and anxiety has caused me to hold my breath without me knowing and I’d catch myself forgetting to breathe momentarily. I’m kind of wondering how this method is different because mine doesn’t feel good at all
@thebuteykomethod
@thebuteykomethod 6 ай бұрын
Hey @sukhan9854, conscious and unconscious breath holding are really different things. When we consciously hold the breath (or reduce breathing volume in the breath light), we do this in a controlled way to increase oxygen delivery and down regulate the nervous system. Often when people unconsciously hold their breath, they tend to hold it for too long, which causes the breathing centre and nervous system to overcompensate, feeding into the cycle. There is more to it, but I hope that helps 🙏

can u elaborate on how butekeyo breathing helps with long covid please?
@thebuteykomethod
@thebuteykomethod 16 күн бұрын
Sure. Long covid can leave our nervous system dysregulated and buteyko helps to improve vagal tone and "repair" the autonomic nervous system. Also, long covid can affect our CO2 tolerance (leaving us with a feeling of air hunger or getting easily out of breath during physical exercise), Buteyko can help to reset CO2 tolerance. It also helps to reduce inflammation and mast cell activation.

Thanks so much for sharing 🙏. This often either happens when people take a big breath before the hold - rather it should be a small, soft, quiet in breath. Or it can also happen if the length of the breath hold is too long for your body at the moment. In this case, try a 3-second breath hold and 15-second rest. You should feel calmer and less agitated afterwards. 👍

Tissue hypoxia (the basis of WH hyperventilation) can have health benefits for some people. The people who would benefit from Buteyko have a chronic illness or a condition of chronic excessive breathing (like snoring) - hyperventilation may be disastrous for them, as many who have tried WH have discovered.
