There's also a ton of character and depth that doesn't actually get directly acknowledged in-show, but it's pretty clear that the writers intended it. Holt was always a bit of a stickler for the rules, but he became so obsessed with it because he had to. His superiors in the 80s would have taken any excuse to fire him and Holt worked hard to avoid that. The show is very much about him learning to trust and interact with his colleagues as a human. He spends a lot of time still afraid that some of his friends will still want to destroy him because he is black or gay.
@luismarcosvillarreal54683 жыл бұрын
Moreover Jake's journey is the opposite: to learn to balance his "childish" aura with a maturity. I find that every character has this sort of duo Jake-Holt growth, like Amy does with Gina and Rosa, it's what I think makes this show feel so natural : )

it makes me so happy that other people think this deeply about a sitcom. truly this show is one of the best on TV right now. the emotional depth is what makes it work, it's what makes so many great sitcoms work, and when it's lacking it's what makes them fail. I knew from the two emotional beats of the pilot that this was something special. The reveal that Holt is gay added higher stakes and the realization that Jake has about teamwork and wearing a shirt and tie means they will focus on growth. love this show so much!

The guitar goes back to a season 1 episode, in which Peralta has hastily and without proof aprehended a suspect (Btw Kid Cudy does a great job here) so he has to obtain a confession or evidence before 48 hours. So Amy says: What's your plan? Annoy him until confesses? Then quick cut to peralta doing the same bad guitar and screaming. Next scene, peralta is going back to the team saying "It didn't work" So, whats funny about that? Clearly annoy someone until confeses is a tool that Peralta still has under his arsenal.

@dcrlingtulip5282 жыл бұрын
@@Nisha-tt6ro The show definitely has some problematic jokes, specifically surrounding mental health disorders. Like Amy’s line “I’m a little OCD” which plays off OCD as perfectionism. While I do agree Brooklyn 99 has done a great job handling certain topics. I am surprised the video doesn’t mention “Homicide: Life on the Streets”. An excellent police drama from the 90s featuring Braugher. Set in Baltimore and based on a book by David Simon (creator of The Wire), Braugher was excellent in that series. And there is an early episode which is pretty much the same concept as this one - all set in the interrogation room. Featuring Braugher and his partner. It is incredible television. For many of us who were huge fans of Homicide, it’s been a delight to see Braugher in this role in Brooklyn 99. And, nicely, he’s a rather different character than his Homicide counterpart. Oh man. But I highly recommend tracking down that show. The conversations between Braugher and partner played by Kyle Secor are brilliant. But! Anyways, there were a few of us old Homicide fans that were excited to see this episode of 99. It feels like a possible tribute to a legendary episode of an underrated series also featuring Braugher. Aside from the general conceit the episodes play out differently, rather than having a Braugher re-create the older episode. If the episode can be found (I am not sure if the Homicide series is easily accessible these days), it would be interesting to do a feature on it and compare.

I wouldn't say this episode is the best - I prefer the earlier ones better - but just like the episode's structure explained in the video, its place in the series is a moment to take a breath from the "usual" plot lines/episodes. If that kind of episodes were more frequent, they would be part of the series' idea/approach/tenet, and wouldn't stand out. Also I felt like the quality the show had slightly started to go down from that season - yet much slower than most sitcoms at this stage - so having this episode kind of reaffirming the strengths of the show at that point felt really fresh.

can we appreciate the structure and thought that went into this video. the summary of the plot was amazing and the comparison of comedy with the kite was soo clever and well thought out. As well as the whole analization of what made the episode perfect. You're amazing at this!! you deserve to be complimented🥰

in the Peralta guitar scene, the chords are not played in randomness. They are synchronized in a way. This could serve as a metaphor for Jake's improvement as a more mature and better person and detective.

Sitcoms that have S5 E14 are always the best episodes of the shows. The Office had Stress Relief S5 E14, Friends had S5 E14. I wonder what other shows have that

The writers of this show deserve their pay increased, and more. They deserve recognition. I do not however agree to the same for recent series release like under the Star Wars, Lord of the Rings and Witcher banners.

B99 is one of the best sitcoms to ever exist. It doesn’t need sexist and homophobic humour to poke fun of the male characters that aren’t traditionally masculine, it just uses another recipe for comedy, and it’s way easier to laugh without a laugh track. The laugh track from older sitcoms feels like it forces me to laugh at the things I don’t even find funny. I’m not watching the episode and laughing, I’m watching someone else does that. B99 succeeded in what HIMYM and TBBT failed to do. Sure you guys can argue that those shows aired in the early 2000’s, but the B99 characters are practically the same age of HIMYM and TBBT characters. The show started during the early 2010’s, it still could’ve relied on that sexist and homophobic humour and had Charles, he’s short, sweet, sensitive, and loves food and making it, the writers could’ve made Charles the butt of the joke, but didn’t. And even when it was mid 2010, the characters still bullied Raj for being feminine. And as a fan of HIMYM and TBBT, I can tell you that the writers don’t need that offensive humour, bc those shows have a lot of memorable episodes that was even funnier on its own without having to ridicule the best character in the series.

I find that B99 was showing itself to be special the moment Holt's backstory is revealed. He's not some doubled-up token minority; his life is defined by the discrimination he suffered in spite of being a model cop. His etnicity and sexuality are mentioned and brought up repeatedly, but either in a natural background way (the perfectly casual way he talks about Kevin and the opera as if it's natural, because it is) or in a meaningful way, like how he advices Terry on the harassment in Moo-Moo (4x16), based on his own experience. The same applies to the other characters too. The above mentioned harassment, Rosa's episode coming out and facing her parents, Amy revealing she was sexually harassed and suffers from a sense of inferiority because of the circumstance. This show is like the inverse of an MCU movie, which is serious but undercut with comedy: you're laughing at the top-tier humor, and then one episode gut punches you with some great drama, usually of the societal commentary sort.

This is my absolute favorite episode of the entire series. When it first aired and B99's future at the time was unknown, I felt that if this had been moved to the end of the season to be their final episode after all of the story arcs had concluded, I would have been happy. It is just such an fantastic episode in terms of the the comedy, the Holt and Jake's relationship, and the drama B99 holds. I remember falling out of my seat laughing when the chair hit Jake. While I am happy with how the series did eventually end, this would have been a good episode to go out on

I think the best b99 episode is S5 E20, Show Me Going. It is perfect, an episode that perfectly shows the ever lasting chain of shooting in America while also showing how they have to deal with the fact that they’re colleague/best friend could not come back from the shooting. It starts off like ever other b99 episode, but then just as the audience thinks it’s going to be just like every other episode we get hit with the shock, a police scanner interrupts Jake, changing the whole mood within seconds. As they are listening to their colleagues who are in danger, they hear they’re best friends name and badge number. Suddenly the mood goes from kinda serious but could go back to silly, to extremely serious and sets the tone for the whole episode. After that to comedy in this episode is seems almost forced, as if they are trying to take their minds off the fact their friend could die by making jokes. Which is done perfectly, this goes on throughout the entire episode. Until the final hill in the episode, the shooting is over and they are waiting for those elevator doors to open just like they have countless times throughout the shows run, they were informed that two officers had died but they don’t know who, suddenly the elevator doors open. The audience is led to believe Rosa is safe, everything is back to normal, but it was just one of the oafs of the 99, everyone is mad at him when Rosa tells them to take it easy on him, the mood changes from hella tense to relieved. The comedy goes from seems forced to them joking together, all together. It’s my favorite and in my opinion the best episode, but this one is really good too. Keep up the good work.

While B99 does well at mixing drama and comedy most of the time, there are times it can feel a bit forced. In the episode where Terry gets racially profiled by another cop for example, Terry and Holt step aside from a dinner party to have a heart-to-heart about it. Th scene was deep, uncomfortable, somber, and real, but then they threw in a joke about Terry not wanting to leave because he was afraid of bumping into an annoying lady at the party. It wasn't the right tone, and the joke fell completely flat. Drama and comedy can both be part of the same great story, but it's important as well not to water down a serious moment with a goofy twist.
