I was at an ice cream place where they have a big barn with cows in it. They get the milk from those cows and use it in ice cream. It was a machine that they willingly walked into and there was food in the bit where they get milked. Some of the cows liked it so much that they tried to go in again! They had the cow brushes too and the cows absolutely loved it. Those cows, they are living the high life.

I'm in the dairy industry and it isn't as fucked up as people say. There are some questionable practices but most cows are happy. Industrial farms are usually privately owned by people who love the cows. There's certainly much improvement to be made, but it's not as bad as people say. Poultry farms, on the other hand? VERY fucked up practices there. Same with pork.

Because I used to just repeat what I'd been taught until I actually starting working in dairy. I don't blame you, I am not an idiot and somehow I just took all these lies as fact, because I heard SO MANY people repeat it. First of all, larger dairies are often MORE humane. Didn't you just watch this video? This is what larger dairies are like. Most dairy farms are privately owned and love their cows, yes this includes larger dairies. I have also worked with smaller dairies and they usually have fewer resources and make more mistakes. Their cows are often treated much worse. "Forcibly impregnated" always makes me laugh. I have helped with AI, and I have helped with bull breeding. The cow doesn't even look up from her grain when you impregnate her using AI, she barely notices and she DOES NOT CARE, I promise you. When you use a bull, she is very much into it and doesn't object, but it's more dangerous than AI and brings up other issues such as biosecurity and biodiversity. I think AI is truly the best for all parties involved, in most cases. And, as I said before, the cow DOES NOT CARE. Like, AT ALL. Male calves are NEVER killed at birth. This is another myth I used to believe. Most male dairy cattle will grow to adulthood and become meat cattle (I'm vegetarian and not a fan of this, but if you eat meat I don't see why you'd object). A small portion of them become veal, BUT veal are not infants. They are young, but not infants, they are a few months old. They only kill enough for demand, so if you want to blame anyone for that it should be the fucked up consumers who are buying veal. As for taking the baby away, not all farmers do that, but many do because dairy cows are NOT good mothers. Most have little to no motherly instinct. Calves are regularly trampled because the mom has no idea what she's doing. Young cows also have poor immune systems, so it may be best for them to live away from adults who could carry disease. Now, I'm not going to say that the industry has no issues. I am trying my best every day to raise the standards of care. But it really doesn't help when people spread misinformation.

Yeah I know they are dairy cows, therefore my comment. You know that dairy cows dont just give/keep giving milk, right? To keep the milk production going they have to inseminate the cows every year. If it is a female calf, GREAT, she can be used as a dairy cow later in her life and if it is a male calf he goes straight to the slaughter house or maybe becomes a breeding bull. Maybe you should do your research?

Grimm Reaper Cows will produce milk without needing to be pregnant, just like goats they can be milked often and becoming milking animals. They won't produce milk unless, well, milked so people think they don't produce it unless they have a baby. The problem is that they don't produce nearly as much milk as they do when they have a calf, for obvious reasons, which is why calves are bred and taken from mothers. Just wanted to clear that up, oh and goats are a bit different than cows in terms of milk production. Milking goats (there is another name but I forget what they are called) can swell up and need to be milked daily (and enjoy it actually because of the release of pressure) without needing to have a baby. I agree that it's awful to take away the calves and that the conditions most cows are in are awful but just be aware that there are some dairy farmers (mostly small farmers) who milk without breeding or taking the calf away.
