A misconception about BTS is that they made it to where they are through social media only. You can't get to this level of fame through just sharing things online. The attraction really lies in their music. The fact that they are so heavily involved in their own craft makes them special but the fact that they use that opportunity to actually convey their own message and thoughts to the world and aren't afraid to do so is what truly makes them unique. They tackle so many subjects a lot of which are things people especially artists avoid putting into songs such as depression, anxiety even suicidal thoughts, fears that the younger generation faces such as not knowing what to do with their lives, the unfairness in the society we live in. They don't only tackle sensitive subjects but also give us a positive message and comfort with their lyrics telling us that we never walk alone, and even if there is a point in our lives that feels like a cold, harsh winter it will pass and spring will come again, to hold on and if we feel like we're gonna crash to accelerate, that after the darkest point of dawn the morning always comes. Those are only a fragment, a drop of water in the vast ocean of beautiful and important messages that BTS conveys and although this is a pretty well researched video documenting their rise it feels unfair and diminishing to credit it all to social media when it only played a very small part. It opened a door for new potential fans to know them but it is not the cause for us, their ARMY to be as dedicated and devoted as we are to them. It's their craft, their artistry and most importantly their message and of course they worked hard and developed all the talent to portray it magnificently. This is why they are where they are and will continue to soar because as long as they are here and have something to say we will remain loyal and stay beside them.

I think the point is that they needed both, and BigHit saw how important social media would be before anyone else did in their industry. It's a given these days that everyone's on social media, but in 2012/2013, it was still relatively novel, especially for artists to use it to directly connect with their audience. It was actually pretty brilliant, to circumvent a competitive industry that didn't want to let them in and go directly to their fans. You're right, without their talent, music and authenticity, they'd just be another group in a sea of thousands of groups internationally. But I'd also say that without their use of social media to connect with not just K-Army, but I-Army, they wouldn't be were they are right now.

1) BTS didn't "target" the West. Most 3G groups have multi-national members. BTS are only Korean and remain radically Korean by not following localization marketing. Social Media meant they were able to find Army no matter where they were :) To that end... 2) SNS presence gets you exposure but doesn't guarantee success. Only talent brings success. Video is correct that BTS used SNS (in typical Baepsae fashion) to subvert the control of Korean broadcasters and the Big 3 by speaking directly to the people. But don't confuse exposure with success. Edit for bad grammar.

I am Korean. Most of Koreans are very proud of him ;) I also am a big fan of BTS. They are so humble and a hard worker. They are a big symbol for Korean young generation. Many young men live in a competitive world so BTS is just hope itself for us. Also many korean girls take care of their appearance too much and sometimes hate themselves cuz of it, So they try to get a plastic surgery although they can be died. But BTS always says we should love ourselves. And Korean society and the world slowly change in a good way.

It’s kinda funny because BTS probably would’ve gone the more traditional marketing route including having them on more variety/ talk shows if they weren’t disrespected and belittled as much as they were. They always shared with fans on social media just to share and be expressive. It wasn’t until bang shi hyuk decided against putting the boys in those uncomfortable situations that they started doing more online marketing with the platform Vlive and bangtan Bombs on KZbin. BTS is more than a social media influence. Their message and their genuine connection with fans is what makes them popular. They confront issues within society and don't sugarcoat things. BTS is bringing things with a stigma into light. Depression, anxiety, bullying, abuse, etc. Not only that, they have such a strong bond with each other and their fans. They're so unapologetically real. Yes, other kpop groups have great bonds, but nothing close to bts. They are soulmates and brothers for life. You can tell they were all made for one another. They talk to their fans every single day, they give us songs and merch and gifts constantly and stay humble. Bts is one of a kind. There is no 'next bts,' there's no 'bts no.2." BTS is bts. Nobody else can replace them or replicate them. They are actual legends, factually, and will literally be in history books and will be talked about even after their disbandment. I became a fan of bts in 2013 when they debuted. I was 10. Yes, it's young. I've been through depression and anxiety, and they have helped me through that. When i tell you these boys are my life, i mean that with every ounce of love and energy in my body. It's more than a fangirly obsession. They have taught me to love myself. They've taught me my self worth. They've taught me how to be a good person. Bts will ALWAYS be a part of me. No argument there. I love them, and I love army. I've met so many amazing people because of bts. You can dislike their music, you can dislike their lyrics. But you CANNOT say that bts is fake. You can't genuinely dislike bts for their personalities and messages. They are too pure and too genuine and too kind. I love bts and I love you, Army. Forever and always.

They NEVER targeted the west... Wtf is that lie? They've said it themselves that their success was unexpected even for them. RM's own words, "our final dream was to perform infront of 10,000 ppl". And simply social media was NOT the reason for their success. Like Yoongi (Suga) also said, "it's how we used social media". ALL kpop groups have a platform, I do agree that BTS's freedom in using it had influence, but to say it was simply bcs of that. Yeah, no. And ARMYs are not the only ones saying they're "more than kpop" many korean critics and critics in general have said this. They don't fit the mold and as BTS said, they're simply BTS. They don't like or want to classify themselves as anything particular. But out of all the research vids, this is definitely one of the best. P.S: To the haters, also to the 2 haters on the comments that were literally replying everywhere: ARMYs dgaf if you don't like BTS's music. But they deserve respect as artists and people. Before you throw bs at them, research. Then, you can hate. But it's honestly stupid since they're the best kind of role models if you simply RESEARCH. Whether it's lyrics, daily lives, donations, actions, morals. BTS are great and will continue to succeed. They were meant to fail but they're still getting bigger. So like they also said, keep watching them grow.

In 'Baepsae' ('Silver Spoon' in English) they called the Baby Boomers m*thrf*ckrs (using a play on words to say the curse w/o actually saying it to clear strict Korean censorship).....and from then on, I knew there was something special about them. While their title tracks are great, a lot of the heart of the band actually lies in their b-tracks like Baepsae, Nevermind, Sea, 2!3!, Lie, HOME, Paldogangsan, Tomorrow, Outro: TEAR, etc. To add, they are genre agnostic, so there's something for almost everyone. Great video overall, but have to disagree with the analysis that their rise to fame was due to social media. Every artist had access to SNS, but BTS had a message and the freedom to write/produce their own music as well as an almost insatiable drive to work to the bone for their music/performance. There's a sincerity and a group chemistry they have that makes them special. The music and message along with the sincerity and group chemistry is not something that can be duplicated. That's why they resonate with so many people. Companies will try to replicate them, but there is no "next BTS." They are not your average Kpop band or white western boyband. They are a voice for a generation and a window into how the future of music may become more open and global. Plus, their audience (as the Funko CEO mentioned) is incredibly diverse, much moreso than the media likes to assume. As a working professional in my 30s who was never into boybands at all and never even into pop all that much, BTS blindsided me because of how they are able to connect to the human experience.

Actually, as a Chinese, i feel like other kpop group are the ones who target US market. there are many other kpop groups out there and trying to make themselves look like international superstar when they are actually not that level. The thing i appreciate Bts the most is they wrote their own music, that's why teens feel connected to them, and they did not write English version of the song because they're popular in US, cause they know they are from Korea, i respect that a lot. Also, many other kpop groups have foreign members, but BTS all made up with Koreans. N E Way Thank you CNBC for doing the video about BTS !

Social media is just a factor. There is only one reason for BTS to be this successful and that is their Music and personality. They write their own lyrics and it connects hearts.
@fideebawa5 жыл бұрын
Guys, the video is about how BTS became a money maker for South Korea and how they've been instrumental in the exportation of Kpop. It's more about their economic impact, not their social or musical impact on Kpop culture. That's why they're not focusing in the fact that BTS are involved in their music production (and remember, though rare, BTS aren't the only Kpop group to do so. Why hasn't Seventeen, for example, achieved the same level of international fame?). Social media was, arguably, the main reason for their worldwide fame. Their use of Twitter since around 2011 meant that they had at least some fans when they finally did debuted in 2013. Their constant use of Twitter and the Bangtan Bombs meant that they were constantly visible to the public, international eye in some way. Foreigners who start listening to Kpop don't immediately start checking writing credits to see if the members were involved (you don't even do that with western artists). Foreigners also don't immediately start watching Running Man or Weekly Idol or anything else that most Kpop idols appear on because they don't even know they exist. But a small clip on KZbin or Twitter is far more familiar territory for foreigners. That's the point. It's not a case of lazy reporters saying "BTS used social media to get popular hur dur", it's a genuine, intelligent, important factor to their success and is actually interesting to explore. Jeez guys

A few months ago, I started to watch BTS videos because I was curious to know why they are so famous. I may not call myself army but I love watching BTS because they are beautiful (not only physically)young men who are sharing their passion for music, their powerful bonds of love and affection that they have among them , their funny moments, their hard work, their dreams, their happiness, etc etc(so many other great positive things that’s too long to enumerate). I don’t follow them on any social media. BTS oozes positivity and is inspirational to many .

this rlly was informative, and i agree, they shouldn't be called kpop. they should be considered normal artists without the label just because they speak in korean. only thing is that it was never their intent to target the Western Market. bts, namjoon especially has expressed how what they achieve is a result of passion and hardwork and its never their intent to break records and thats prevalent in the way they act and how humble they are. they are here to spread their message and share their love for their art.

What's wrong with Kpop?
@lokisalive5 жыл бұрын
@@liaminkorea1770 i mean nothing is wrong with KPOP however in korea they consider kpop as an industry and idol music as discount western songs. KPOP outside of bts is like they said factory manufactured music and thats where you can see what sets them apart. on reddit someone explained it better - Ive come across many posts debating whether or not BTS can be considered K-pop and many people concerned about BTS fans who weren't general K-pop fans, so as a recent Korean fan I thought I might shed light on what these terms mean to many of us and why in general we're not surprised at this. Disclaimer: I will speak in general terms and use my personal experience as a case study (ie, don't take this as scientific guide but rather a (hopefully) clarifying opinion). First of all, it's important to understand how we (Koreans) understand the term "K-pop". The term is not used in Korea except for in a foreign context (eg: on the news about BTS' US performances and chart achievements). Here, pop songs sung in Korean by boy/girl groups put together by music companies are called "idol music" or "idol pop" and is generally not listened to or much respected by those older than 21-22 mainly for the reason that, to us (I'm in my 30s), it is not really Korean. Yes, the singers are (mainly) Korean and the sungs are 99% Korean, but around the mid-2000s when the government decided that idol music was going to become a competitive export, idol music companies mostly bought songs made by Western producers (Swedes, Americans, British, etc.) and just had Korean writers put Korean lyrics to them. Much of the time, these are songs that were already rejected by A-class Western pop singers (SM is an especially big sinner in this). So why would we listen to B-grade Western pop songs when we could listen to A-grade Western pop? Moreover, to us, the key criteria is not genre that determines whether it's truly Korean or not is the presence or absence of what we call "Han". Han has no direct translation in English but it's a mix of sorrow, nostalgia, anger, pain, and hope. It's the emotional journey and state of mind of someone who has been gravely wronged but is powerless (made powerless) in society to take revenge but decides eventually to cling to the hope of a better future when you overcome your Han. It colours Korean films, dramas, and esp our literature. And, regardless of genre, it's in all true Korean music. And this brings me to BTS. I think the Korean general public is now fascinated with BTS because they are packaged like a typical idol group and so in the beginning most of us older than 21-22 would have dismissed them as another idol group making idol music. But then they kept defying the odds and posted incredible results in the US, and that's when the Korean general public (myself included) started wondering "what is it that the West sees that we're not seeing? Could it be that this is not a typical idol group or their music isn't really idol music?" It turns out, their music is extremely Korean. I sense Han in almost all their title songs but especially in Spring Day, and it's no coincidence that it's Spring Day that drew in so many Korean fans in their 30s, 40s, etc. On top of that, their personal story of struggling and finally being acknowledged in the industry is also full of Han. And this has led me (and I'm sure many others in Korea who otherwise wouldn't touch idol music/K-pop with a 12-foot pole) to realise that they are Korean artists producing true Korean music. - id also like to point out how kpop fans in general genuinely despise bts and armys and have multiple times tried to destroy their career and hurt bts fans. when bts have an achievement, kpop fans suddenly think its ok to call it a collective kpop achievement and advancement when really it was BTS' and ARMYs hard work that brought that in. at this point we've all realised the whole industry is against us and really we can only trust and support bts and ourselves. im not sure if this helped alot but if it didnt im sure many people would be able to clarify further on twitter or google or here!
@lokisalive5 жыл бұрын
many always ask why bts? why them? and really i think you can see for yourself if you delve deep enough. bts standards have excelled to the point it can't fit that genre or label "kpop". its not just korean pop music thats written by strangers about love and breakups and its not just firey choreography and good looks. anyone can have that. anyone can sing dance rap look good and have that big of a platform but like one of the bts members said, its how you utilise it. they started off in terms of talent (maybe even moreso) just like any kpop idol/group would but with much less resources, help, budget etc. and more prejudice yet here they are now breaking barriers and exceeding kpop.

You guys need to do a lot more research before you come over writing comments that make zero sense, you look like fools tbh. BTS are 7 hard working men that started with a passion for performing and spreading their message and built their way to the top. BTS has been together for 6 years+ if some of you didn't know. There's a reason they are so big right now. You don't have to like them, just respect them, that's all. Anyways, the point of this was, please do your research.
