It is true that the grip Buddhism as an official religion used to have in ancient India is no longer the case. However, the teachings and views of Buddhist are respected and followed widely by the millions of Indians regardless of their religious faith. Separating Buddhism from India means destroying an entire Indian history that was so rich and powerful. It is because of Buddhism that Indians can proudly claim for having worlds first and biggest university, known as Nalanda.

@saikirantatineni6783 Stupa is actually a mound of Earth with one of Buddha's relics (tooth or a strand of hair). Thus it is a reliquary & not a place or quarters to live. Living quarters are known by the name of "vihara"; probably you meant this.

@@ashishlohani7683 Buddhism is more popular than Christianity in Japan . Get your facts straight. As per CIA world factbook , 67.2 percent of Japanese follow Buddhism. Only 1.5 percent are christians. Many East Asians follow both folk religion and Buddhism. They see no difference between the two.

in afghanistan-pakistan it was alchon huns. In odisha is was shankaracharya and somavanshi dynasty. also only ashoka in mauryan empire was buddhist. the emperors after him were jain. gupta empire irrespective of what people think actually heavily patronized buddhism. like the Ratnagiri-Udayagiri-Lalitgiri triangle in india.

@mknarula The answer to your question lies in the person of Pushyamitra Sunga. He was the commander of the Maurya Emperor then (Brhadradha, himself Buddhist & the great-great-grandson of Emperor Ashoka). The Vaidic parampara was almost folding up its activity at that time. For its revival & sustenance, it badly needed someone who could replace Buddhism, supplanted by Hinduism/Vaidicism/Sanatana Dharma as state religion. Pushyamitra Sunga has empathy & even a desire to do that. As commander of Emperor's army, when the Emperor was inspecting a parade, Sunga assassinated him. Following the Regicide, he anointed himself as the Emperor on Magadha throne & started the Sunga dynasty. Starting with him, Buddhist structures & Buddhism were systematically eliminated. It ushered in Vaidicism that saw its pinnacle of glory under Gupta period that followed.

In sangam era ( 800bce acc to modern estimates ), the only visible religions were these. Both Buddhism nd Hinduism spread with metaphysical knowledge nd military might bcos of our ancestors actions. That is what they do subtle manipulation. They don't directly tell lies, but they manipulate the truth and include passive lies. For example, the term Dravidian and Hinduism are contemporary, and were used in racial and religious connotation in modern period. But still the author while telling a true history, do not use Hinduism, but use the term Dravidians!!

A big Buddha statue is built in amaravati to appropriate the place to satavahana time by previous govt . Andhra ikshvaku who were shaivites primarily has commissioned a lot of stupas and Buddhist art ( primarily by their queens ) . One can clearly say that was good period for śilpakala.

The Buddhist method of meditation was there all over South India in the form of Siddha meditation. What Buddha made difference is that he brought it into light and written form, which the Siddhas in the South thought this system orally. The very name of Siddhartha suggest this.

Kani with his one eyed takes again has bettered himself by a half a one eye take . Stupa construction was better technology , hence Andhra people adopted Buddhism . Flushed down the bowl are facts , their interpretations , respect for the intellect of those ancient people of the Andhra region ( Kani seems to be implying they were idiots ) etc . The only good development here is the fact that Kani uses the word "appropriation" while "inventing " his theory of how the Buddhists converted the Andhras by adopting their cultural & religious motifs traditions customs etc in order to smoothen the conversion process . This must be owing to efforts of decades of the counter movement to the prominent left wing voices in deciding our history in that time span who associated Brahminism with "appropriation" & all other religions namely Buddhism , Jainism , Sikhism Izzlam , Christianity etc as "synthesizing belief systems " while proselytizing & accepting new converts .

ok, so apparently Buddhism adjusted to local practices. i would love to know what king Ahoka's influence on the teachings was. eg Constantine made Christianity the state religion. and since the scriptures have been dramatically edited. i reckon a worldly autocratic ruler would find himself at odds with the heart of the Buddhist teachings. if what happens in your life is the result of the actions you take. if you really believe that then would there be any need for an external central government?

He is not degrading anyone. Most of our history has been delhi centric and in turn North india centric. This has led to ignoring the history of other regions such as deccan, east india and northeast. How does exploring deccan's history is degrading to North india? There was no Nepal then. Nepal came into existence sometime late 1700s. These were parts of UP Bihar which the British gifted to Nepal after Nepal helped East India Company to put down the 1857 mutiny by sepoys from UP Bihar.

Biblical or Quranic traditions are centered around the concept of religion, Relegion is about belief in a God and his messenger and the book as an abstract manifestation that entails distinct sets of beliefs or doctrines for the believers and their relation with non believers which is mostly based on hatred and rejection. Brahmn vs God/Allah. Brahmn (Not Brahama as both are spelt and pronounced differently) Brahmn is the abstract virtue less form less non manifested from of God whose virtues remain hidden till the time he expresses himself. He is the point of singularity the cosmic reality in which everything remains confined. There is no equivalent of Brahmn or abstract virtueless formless God in Christanity or Islam.In Islam Allah is not formless or virtue less in Christanity God is formless but not virtue less. Creation in Hinduism(Indic cosmology) vs Islam/Christanity. According to Hinduism the creation comes into existence when the non manifested formless virtue less Brahmn expresses himself. Nirgun Nirakar vs One God. Nirgun Nirakar (Virtue less, formless creator) is worshipped by Hindus on the other hand in Islam or Bible God has definite virtues he can't be virtue less as a result there is no technique or method to pray and meditate to a virtue less formless God. Christians or Muslims do not have such an understanding of this concept so they are not capable of worshipping the virtue less or formless form of God they can worship a formless God but not a virtue less God. Ishwar/Bhagwan vs God/Allah. Ishwar or Bhagwan is the manifested form of God which has virtues and is capable of existing in any form or shape and can also be formless. God or Allah has some specific virtues and they are not capable of existing in any form shape or place. Hindu Trinity vs God/Allah. Brahama, Vishnu and Mahesh are the manifested Hindu God trinity who come into existence with the start of creation who emerge from Brahmn. They are the personified denotation of the functions of universe Brahama being the creator or the personified function of creation, Vishnu being the sustainer or the personified version of sustainer, Mahesh is the destroyer or personification of the function of transition of state or destruction. In Christianity or Islam there is no such concept. Devtas vs God/Allah. Devtas and Deities are the subordinate personified functionaries of the creator. They are revered, respected and worshipped as a mark of respect to the creator and his powers by which the universe functions. They are the live expression of creator and his powers and form the source of Inspiration, knowledge and appreciation for the mankind. (They represent fire, wind, sun earth and heavenly bodies) There are 33 categories of devtas including living ones. Human devi and devtas are the most revered and best idles or role models for the people society and civilization who protect, inspire and enlighten the mankind. There is no such equivalent in Muslims and Christian traditions they do not understand this form of spirituality and confuse it with the worship of many Gods. It seems that they and their God doubt the existence of many Gods that is why they all the time say there is one God while there is no such doubt in Indian spirituality. In Islam and Christanity only God or Allah are worthy of worship and praise and the worship and praise of his live creation or the powers is strictly prohibited. Nature is inferior and cant be praised it is simply ment for the exploitation of mankind. Indian Meditation & worship vs Prayer in Islam/Christianity. There are several meditation techniques, prayer and spiritual paths that are prescribed, accepted and practiced in Indian spiritual traditions ranging from subtle to intense. The choice of the method or technique depends on one’s training, nature, capacity, aptitude and attitude. Meditation is an abstract form of mind body spiritual technique that emphasis on connecting inner self with the cosmic reality it again has several variations and degrees of intensity. Similarly worship and prayer can also be conducted in various manner ranging from very subtle to intense involving both tangible and non tangible aspects … OM the sound of cosmic reverberation that fills and travel through the inner cosmos of mind and body. It is not the name of Brahmn, Allah or God but it is the vibration that fills and resonates the cosmos of human body and cerebrum it cleanses the mind and soul of all the clutter and noise helps to connect with the cosmic reality the abstract formless creator. Purpose of life in Indian Spiritualism vs Islam/Christanity Purpose or aim of life in Indian Dharmic traditions is enlightenment and moksha or liberation from the mundane mind and Earthly desires which is the source of all pain suffering and sin and the cycle of life and death and be one with the supreme consciousness. Aim of Islam is to pray for the end of the World and resurrection of dead to go to heaven to enjoy and indulge in the bodily desires of sex food drinks etc. although it has no significance in a non biological life as it is only needed for our biological life process. Aim of Christian life is resurrection from death and go to heaven to live with him and be like him in a humanly bodily form in life and conduct.

in my opinion ,buddhism always needed political patronage to survive .it was not like the hindu system that gave birth to great teachers and avtars . Buddhism was compassionate to embrace the lower castes that were illiterates,but hindus gave birth to sages almost every century at various parts of India among all castes.that bound the hindu vedic mentality very strongly . besides the sangha of Buddhism had women monks ,and sexual corruption gave them bad name as compared to the hindu mutts . These could be outward reason but every doctrine needs a strong inbuilt character which was lacking among buddhist . They were like the catholics and muslims that could spread only after a victory in battle field.The other means were bribes and rice bowl that is more earthly .the vedic system and hindu sages gave high priority to character than mere learning and political power which was self sustaining.after all best argumentator is a man with poor character , especially with respect to women .hindu sages were not scandalous ,but Buddhist sangha were filled with scandalous liaison giving a bad name just like vatican city or khankas of mulla molvis .one incorruptible sage brings eternity nearerto the ordinary man or woman .

Respect your opinion. But Buddhism refused the cast system and judge only individuals action. Buddhism is a philosophy that only very few people could understand rather than following blindly.
