Guunsk Prrilbus here: the main partner for Rain Dance Butterfree is Kingdra! I just didnt need to bring it out, the sheer power of the Butterfree-Electrode core was just too powerful. Also an extremely funny tech option on Butterfree is Nightmare. Mega inconsistent, but punishes folks staying in to burn a sleep turn expecting Butterfree to have no damage output. Also makes Butterfree actually capable of closing out a game in a last-pokemon scenario. Not likely, but technically possible!

Let's not forget Simone Lim, who ran a Choice Scarf, status-only Butterfree in Gen 8 to become 2020's Junior Division champion. Of course, the rest of her team was more typical, which included Tyranitar, Whimsicott, Rotom-Heat, Excadrill and Gyarados, but still...finding a place for such an otherwise terrible Pokemon is something to be admired.

This is exactly why Gen 3 OU is the best Meta of all time. Butterfree having great utility but no one gave it a bat's eye due to existance of Tyranitar, it's very low BST, and terrible typing. I mean that's the point of the early bug pokémon. They evolve fast and are particularly strong for the early game, but tend to fall off later once mons start evolving and they no longer have the statistical advantage. Of course any mon can be good in-game if you overlevel them enough.
@ZeroKitsune

Well, competitive doesn't usually work much like the single-player campaigns. The level of strategy and planning is something else entirely. NPCs almost never switch out, but it's super common in competitive because a good guess on your opponent's action can give you a huge advantage. Basically, NPCs won't really stop you from using Sleep Powder + Dream Eater all day long, but competitive players will try to outspeed you or use substitute and your Butterfree will likely be OHKO'd by anything it doesn't resist/ignore, so with it's meh speed it's just a free KO for your opponent if you don't predict correctly to get it in safely.

I’d love a Compound Eyes Pokémon with Rock STAB or coverage, as Rock is only really held back offensively by its poor accuracy.
@reddragonair3147
@reddragonair3147 Жыл бұрын
And Bug/Rock typing gets a lot of flack, but I think it's actually pretty solid. It only has 3 weaknesses, one of which is Steel and only really counts when it's Metagross' Meteor Mash. Its resistances aren't a lot, but it's defensively neutral to a lot that either type on its own would be weak to. I think Compound Eyes would be a very reasonable ability for Armaldo, honestly.
@MKL874
@MKL874 Жыл бұрын
@@reddragonair3147 It only resists normal and poison, it's only immune to sandstorm residual damage. On the offense, bug is resisted by 7 types and rock moves are ok, but commonly inaccurate. Not that good if you think about it. If you want a similar combination, but with better utility, try grass/rock
@reddragonair3147
@reddragonair3147 Жыл бұрын
@@MKL874 Well that's what people tend to say. But the combination of Rock and Bug is pretty solid for STAB, and as an offensive Pokemon being defensively neutral to everything but 3 types is pretty good. It also doesn't have any double weaknesses, so depending on stats it can net you some useful switch in opportunities. Also, if you remember, this is a theoretical for a Rock type with Compound Eyes, so accuracy for Rock moves wouldn't be a problem anyway.
@reddragonair3147
@reddragonair3147 Жыл бұрын
@@MKL874 Also keep in mind that you aren't usually going to be solely reliant on your STABS for damage. Very few offensive Pokemon do. Usually you're using coverage like Earthquake, recognizing that things resist STABS almost inevitably.
@dontmisunderstand6041
@dontmisunderstand6041 Жыл бұрын
@@MKL874 That's specifically why the topic was Compound Eyes potentially being good for a Rock type. Because by type chart, Rock is actually tied with Ground as being the best offensive type, Rock moves simply tend to be inaccurate. For the record, your recommendation of Grass/Rock doesn't match the arguments you use against Bug/Rock. Grass is also resisted by 7 types, and the combination also only resists two types defensively while having MORE weaknesses than Bug/Rock.

I will say this. As a man that played the very first pokemon. Butterfrees potential is limitless. I exclusively played her in Gold. Before i gave up my Gold version gmby color game, Buttery was not only undefeated but also nearly unstoppable. Trained her from the ground up, zero rare candys, and every vitamin buff you could get with acuracy and special defense as my focus. I trained it against its weaknesses to give it just a hairs edge to at least survive any obvious super effective hits. And viola.......unstoppable. moves i had were sleep powder, leechseed, dream eater, and phsycic. Anything i couldnt take out with dream eater or phsycic, leechseed did the work. I never switched. Often times taking on an entire set of pokemon leaving maybe 1 or 2 in my opponents pocket. And i always told them, if you loose more than 2 pokemon to Butterfree, you will loose no matter how good you are because i spent that much time on her as one of my most favorite pokemon that was equally heavily underrated. What usually followed after her was either a Glass Cannon built Gengar i had in my back pocket as either a stall or take out pokemon or a Typhlosion who could usually take on some of the best on his own even with handicaps, as i trained all of my pokemon against their weaknesses purposely to handle the moves that effected them the most, especially support moves. Let me tell you. Hands down best strat started before i even built the team i had. It started literally with how much time and effort i put into their leveling. They say that doing what i did doesnt make a difference algorythmically based on stats as thats not hiw the games worked even back then. Well i can say that it definitelly worked and payed off for me bcuz my pokemon at level 70 were taking out level 100 pokemon with ease. Some were rare candys specials, others were closely built as my team was. But i put a lot of thought into how i was going to train them. I wanted my team to be tanky against their weaknesses. Enough so that i would survive and keep them alive as long as i needed them to be. Wether the game was fast or slow, either way my opponent usually left embarrased and demoralised that no matter what they did they were at the mercy of my game. As it would often start with a false sense of security based attitude of "I got this, you suck, look at your lineup," for them it was like going to a candy covered house only to be locked up inside and see the horror of what lied beneath the candy covered shingles.

Considering how it played a huge part in making this video happen, I'd say ButteRentFree was a top-tier nickname. 😂 Interesting how Gen 3 is the only OU tier where the top threats are just slow enough for this butterfly to actually accomplish something. Really shows that the writers of the anime had to write Ash's Butterfree out because it was too useful in solving any conflict considering how potent status conditions are in the show as well. (I remember that most of the time it didn't even attack... it would just Sleep Powder and win)

Not that Darkrai was by any means uncommon, but in gen 5 or 6 ubers (can't remember which) I used to run one with dark void, thunder wave, will-o-wisp, and trick with a choice scarf and a bulky EV spread, it was a setup that nobody ever saw coming that would routinely cripple teams to a point that made battles laughably easy to win even at 2k+ rating.

Now this is actually insane. Butterfree is one of those horrible pokemon with a great ability and move pool. Compound eyes is brilliant in regards to the powder moves, actually giving it viability outside of just something to beat brock and weak trainers in the beginning of the game. As opposed to Beedrill, who couldnt even do that.

Just playing casual I always loved Butterfree for how easy it makes catching wild mons. In gen9 I played basically the entire game with just my vivillon.

Either I was ahead of the game or people really just don't look at the options but I can't believe it took this long for this combo to finally gain some recognition. I mean I've been doing this since the game came out 😅

I really wish something similar could happen to Beedrill. He does have just a couple interesting moves that he could use after all. My boi deserves appreciation. For as hard as it can be.

True, I am also a beedrill enjoyer. Too bad in gen 3 and before he was complete garbage :/ Idk how you'd use him effectively, what tools do you suggest he use?

The best I can think of would be being a not very good substitute salac berry with endeavor user. Gen 3 doesn't have focus sash tho and beedrill doesn't learn endure, which would help. Get low with sub and salac then endeavor and twineedle for the kill to get boosts? Thats all ai got 🫠

@@YoghTato Yes, something like that! It'd be really hard indeed, but if someone actually managed to pull it off, we'd be blessed.

I used a Butterfree in a platinum rando run and was surprised at what it could do. Accurate sleep is just so good.

Yea explosion works differently in gen 3. The turn just ends after explosion

Think the same thing happens if you switch something in and sack it to spikes. The opponent doesn't get to move that turn

I remember using a butterfree in online battles in pokemon x and sweeping entire teams with it. Good times.
