I was a 10 year old pop kid when the Lesser Free Trade Hall gigs happened and so was oblivious, but would become a baby punk a year or so later, initially due to Sex Pistols, but Buzzcocks were the biggest band for me in my top 4 (Buzzcocks, Pistols, The Stranglers and The Clash). There was an added connection that they were local, Pete was from down the road in Leigh (my much older girlfriend came bouncing up to me one night, because she found out that she worked with Pete's mum). Today I count two people who attended that first gig (and have appeared in documentaries recounting the event) as friends. Tim Lyons who went on to be in The Things, with John Maher on drums (who supported Buzzcocks. A double-shift for John) and Ian Moss, singer with The Hamsters and many other bands through the years, who I videoed being interviewed by David "I Swear I Was There" Nolan, at the launch of one of his books (on my channel 'PMS - Interview & Q&A').

Buzzcocks certainly had a unique quirky sound and were my secret love as i made the transition from UK punk into US hardcore. Ironically, the only album i own is A Different Kind Of Tension but i can listen to that beauty from start to finish. I see Steve on social media all the time...and i do believe he's currently touring in the US. Love the video. Cheers

THE Buzzcocks are what we called them in the day. One of the great bands of my youth!
@rastalique81142 ай бұрын
That's what i thought! I had "Singles Going Steady" and I remember "The" Buzzcocks. (Most punk bands wete using "the").
@meofnz2320Ай бұрын
I just made the same comment. I’d never noticed before but their promotional name is actually Buzzcocks. But they were always referred to as the Buzzcocks. It changes the meaning subtly. Same with the Sex Pistols: the band name was Sex Pistols but we always prefix it with “the”. There’s a subtle grammatical point in there somewhere because some band names don’t require the definite article eg Big Country. I think might have to do with whether the name indicates a collective or single entity or nominative or dative or I dunno…
@yokosomikeАй бұрын

EVERY SONG on Singles Going Steady is awesome. EVERY ONE! I listed to the college station to stay on on top of new wave back in the day, but never heard Buzzcocks until someone I didn't even know was a punk loaned his disc. Very high pitched sounding, but great tunes.

Back in the day we always called them the Buzzcocks even though their name on all the album covers was credited as “Buzzcocks”. I don’t know why exactly but it just didn’t sound right to say “I’m going to see Buzzcocks tonight”. It was always “I’m going to see the Buzzcocks” A quirk of English I suppose.

Agreed, it sounds weird. But I think Steve mentions in his book (or it was in a different book) they are adamant there’s no “the”

@TheFeo2e2 ай бұрын
they really just changed Manchester whereas the Pistols changed the world
@soundofhistory_2 ай бұрын
You can argue that those Manchester bands changed the world, especially in the post punk era. Not too mention how they basically brought us Emo music and then Oasis. A lot of that is traced back to Buzzcocks
@andrewcowie4005Ай бұрын
I think Buzzcocks had a greater legacy with the sound they created, and those they influenced. Not to say the Pistols didn’t have a massive influence also.
@kennethnorman80792 ай бұрын
I’ve purchased the book, but since Pete was always the heart of Buzzcocks(Never Mind the “The”), I’ll wait for Howard Devoto to write the story. I’m sure Diggle is a nice guy, but he wasn’t the George Harrison of the band, he was more the Ringo. The fact he’s still using the name reeks of desperation. It’s would be like Ringo’s All-Star band touring as The Beatles.

It’s not true to say that, on A Different Kind of Tension, Shelley’s songs are on one side, Diggle’s on the other. There are only two Diggle tracks on the whole album, and they are on side one, interspersed with Shelley songs. Diggle only has one song on the first two albums. He has two on the third. This is very Diggle-leaning, I suppose because of the new book. But Diggle has been quite dishonest over his roll in the band, and disparaging of Shelley. See his first book Harmony in My Head.
