Basically everything Lewis wrote is pure gold if not downright prophetic. As people who have had troubles with demons in the past the Screwtape Letters are a tough read for my husband and I because Lewis nailed the evil in it so perfectly its unsettling.

@@Buttcakes15 Sure, it was different kinds for both of us. He had a particular demon that staked outside of his room at night, there were some wiccans in his hometown that didn't like him and my suspicion is they called something to harass him, but it could only do so much because he was saved and protected by Jesus. The entity eventually seemed to go away. As for me it was fewer instances over a short period of time but for a time I was able to see more spiritual things than I can now, and one demon in particular I "saw" and it was the only time in my life I can say I understand what being paralyzed with fear feels like. I wasn't a follower of Christ then so I didn't have the will or the skill to rebuke it, thankfully I had a friend there who could and did for it. It didn't send it away entirely but more pushed it back so it wasn't looming right over me. Needless to say I became a believer in Jesus and joined His kingdom not long after these experiences and seeing the spiritual power my Christian friends had over this evil.

A TRUE PROPHET OF GOD 2 Chronicles 20:20 = Believe God and His prophets and you shall prosper. “... Believe in the Lord your God, so shall ye be established; believe his prophets, so shall ye prosper.” 1 John 4:1= Test the Spirits Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world. Prophecy is used for: Eph. 4:12-13 = Perfecting saints, work of the ministry, edifying of the body of Christ. “12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: 13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:” A prophet of God will: Numbers 12:6 = Vision and then dream. “..., Hear now my words: If there be a prophet among you, I the Lord will make myself known unto him in a vision, and will speak unto him in a dream.” Luke 1:76-79 = Talks of the 2nd coming, salvation of the remissions of sin. “And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways; 77 To give knowledge of salvation unto his people by the remission of their sins, 78 Through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us, 79 To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.” Isaiah 8:20 = Must be in Harmony w/ God’s word and law. “To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them.” Lamentations 2:9 = Visions are in Harmony w/ Word n Law. “Her gates are sunk into the ground; he hath destroyed and broken her bars: her king and her princes are among the Gentiles: the law is no more; her prophets also find no vision from the Lord.” Deut. 18:18-19 = Acts in accordance with the will and the approval of God expressed in the Bible in general, and the 10 commandments. “I will raise them up a Prophet from among their brethren, like unto thee, and will put my words in his mouth; and he shall speak unto them all that I shall command him. 19 And it shall come to pass, that whosoever will not hearken unto my words which he shall speak in my name, I will require it of him.” 1 Corinthians 14:21= Harmony with preceding prophets of God’s word. “In the law it is written, With men of other tongues and other lips will I speak unto this people; and yet for all that will they not hear me, saith the Lord.” Deut. 18:22 = Must come true, and does not lie. “When a prophet speaketh in the name of the Lord, if the thing follow not, nor come to pass, that is the thing which the Lord hath not spoken, but the prophet hath spoken it presumptuously: thou shalt not be afraid of him.” 2 Kings 5:15-16 = Does not prophesy for fees, charges or payments. “And he returned to the man of God, he and all his company, and came, and stood before him: and he said, Behold, now I know that there is no God in all the earth, but in Israel: now therefore, I pray thee, take a blessing of thy servant. 16 But he said, As the Lord liveth, before whom I stand, I will receive none. And he urged him to take it; but he refused.” 2 Peter 1:20 = Does not give their own private interpretation of his or another prophet’s prophecy. It is always the Lord’s interpretation based on what he has revealed. “Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.” 2 Peter 1:21 = Doesn’t prophesy in his own name. “For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.” Isaiah 58:1 = Points out the sins, transgressions and iniquities of the people against God. “Cry aloud, spare not, lift up thy voice like a trumpet, and shew my people their transgression, and the house of Jacob their sins.” Isaiah 24:19-21 = Warns the people of God’s coming judgments. “The earth is utterly broken down, the earth is clean dissolved, the earth is moved exceedingly. 20 The earth shall reel to and fro like a drunkard, and shall be removed like a cottage; and the transgression thereof shall be heavy upon it; and it shall fall, and not rise again. 21 And it shall come to pass in that day, that the Lord shall punish the host of the high ones that are on high, and the kings of the earth upon the earth.” 1 Cor. 14:3-4 = Edifies God’s people. “But he that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort. 4 He that speaketh in an unknown tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church.” 1 John 4:15 = Exalts Christ as the Son of God. “Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God.” Luke 24:27 = Even Jesus Exalted Himself as the Son of God. “And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.” Mark 2:27-28 = Another example of His exaltation. Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath. Matt 7:29 = Speaks w/Authority. “For he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.” Matt 7:16-20 = Bear good fruit. “Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? 17 Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. 19 Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. 20 Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.” Physical signs: Numbers 24:4 = Eyes are open during vision. Falls down. ‘He hath said, which heard the words of God, which saw the vision of the Almighty, falling into a trance, but having his eyes open:’ Dan. 10:7-18 = Falls down first, has no strength and no breath even while speaking, while in vision, then becomes strong through God. “And I Daniel alone saw the vision: for the men that were with me saw not the vision; but a great quaking fell upon them, so that they fled to hide themselves. 8 Therefore I was left alone, and saw this great vision, and there remained no strength in me: for my comeliness was turned in me into corruption, and I retained no strength. 9 Yet heard I the voice of his words: and when I heard the voice of his words, then was I in a deep sleep on my face, and my face toward the ground. 10 And, behold, an hand touched me, which set me upon my knees and upon the palms of my hands. 11 And he said unto me, O Daniel, a man greatly beloved, understand the words that I speak unto thee, and stand upright: for unto thee am I now sent. And when he had spoken this word unto me, I stood trembling. 12 Then said he unto me, Fear not, Daniel: for from the first day that thou didst set thine heart to understand, and to chasten thyself before thy God, thy words were heard, and I am come for thy words. 13 But the prince of the kingdom of Persia withstood me one and twenty days: but, lo, Michael, one of the chief princes, came to help me; and I remained there with the kings of Persia. 14 Now I am come to make thee understand what shall befall thy people in the latter days: for yet the vision is for many days. 15 And when he had spoken such words unto me, I set my face toward the ground, and I became dumb. 16 And, behold, one like the similitude of the sons of men touched my lips: then I opened my mouth, and spake, and said unto him that stood before me, O my lord, by the vision my sorrows are turned upon me, and I have retained no strength. 17 For how can the servant of this my lord talk with this my lord? for as for me, straightway there remained no strength in me, neither is there breath left in me. 18 Then there came again and touched me one like the appearance of a man, and he strengthened me,” Summary: Falls down and becomes weak. Raised up and strengthened by God. Has eyes wide open during vision Does not breath during vision, but can speak. Remember not to be deceived: Rev. 16:14 = They can work miracles. “For they are the spirits of devils, working miracles, which go forth unto the kings of the earth and of the whole world, …” Deuteronomy 18:10-11 = Divination/Fortune Teller, Enchanter, Enchanter (cast spells on objects), Astrologers/Horoscope, Witches/female psychics, Charmer/Magician Spirit Medium/talks to demons that poses as the deceased, Wizards (Male psychics), Necromancer (prays to and for the dead). “There shall not be found among you any one that maketh his son or his daughter to pass through the fire, or that useth divination, or an observer of times, or an enchanter, or a witch. 11 Or a charmer, or a consulter with familiar spirits, or a wizard, or a necromancer.” 2 Cor. 11:13-15 = Even Satan will impersonate Christ. “For such are false apostles, deceitful workers, transforming themselves into the apostles of Christ. 14 And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light. 15 Therefore it is no great thing if his ministers also be transformed as the ministers of righteousness; whose end shall be according to their works.” 2 Thessalonians 2:3-4 = Satan himself will impersonate the 2nd coming before the real one. Let no one in any way deceive you, for it will not come unless the apostasy comes first, and the man of lawlessness is revealed, the son of destruction, who opposes and exalts himself above every so-called god or object of worship, so that he takes his seat in the temple of God, displaying himself as being God.

My dad was abusive growing up. He was an atheist/agnostic engineer working for Boeing. I didn't think much about God until a Christian neighbor in college kept talking about "praying to receive Christ" whatever that meant. I was a stripper in St. Louis at time and I lived a wild life. So I got on my knees in the shower at 19 and basically said Jesus if you can forgive my sins and change my life I'm in. I didn't expect much but felt like I had nothing to lose. In the days that followed such a warm and love washed over me I was utterly stunned. At first I thought I must be conjuring this up in my own mind. However this love and presence of God overwhelmed me. I began looking into religions and historical evidence for Christianity bc I realized this stuff might actually be true. God so changed my life that my atheist/abusive dad who once laughed at my belief in God ALSO became a Christian after much research. We are now close friends....went to seminary together.....and we both ended up in ministry trying to serve people. I've studied CS. Lewis in seminary; his writing skill was only surpassed by his extraordinary understanding of the human condition. Ben we may not agree on who Christ was, but I love the Jews because it was you Jews who put the Bible in my hand. Yes the NT was also written by Jews. The Jews started Judaism and Christianity. The early church were ALL Jews. Zechariah 14 is the end of the story. Israel at the very end will be surrounded and sacked. Then God will come with His Holy Ones(Dan 7) and land on the mount of Olives in Israel and destroy those who are destroying the Jews. Then the Jews will realize the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob and Christ are one. Zechariah 12 tells of the Jews weeping for the one they pierced. God bless the Jewish people! Much love to Ben Shapiro! BTW we know Isaiah 53 was written before Christ lived. And the original rabbinic teaching saw this passage as Messianic. Only after Christ life and death was so clearly depicted in this passage did rabbi's change there interpretation of Isaiah 53 to mean Israel...which in context makes no sense. There is reason rabbis do not teach Isaiah 53...it makes them feel very uncomfortable.

At a time when I was doubting Christianity, C.S. Lewis’s writings were of great help to help me see that evil is a real thing. The Screwtape Letters is in some way far more terrifying than any horror novel ever written, showing us how evil possibly operates. A philosophical and allegorical story that at the same time is very accurate.

Absolutely! The fact is that the difference between Hitler and you or me is not a difference of substance, but a difference of degree of evil. He is simply more of what we are and we are less of what he is. At the fundamental level, our evil nature is the same. The reason we are not Hitler is because we do not have the opportunity and circumstance he had.

@moshet842 We also didn't grow up in Weimar Germany, ww1, and the communist revolution that killed a million Germans after ww1. Hitler looked directly into the void, and it not only looked back into him, but consumed him entirely. Mein Kampf should be required reading in high-school, it shows his human side, and his motivations, but it's also teaches the lesson of how much ambition can consume you when given absolute power. There's no possibility of true love if it's not freely given. And although God can increase His influence on us, to make us think of Him and believe in Him, He also wants to exercise the least possible amount of influence, because in part He wishes to see our own effort in that, and how much we are willing to seek Him with less interference. And reward us accordingly. He does increase His influence in people who are more resistant, but usually does that later in life, or even in their last moments. But someone who resists more and avoids Him more, during a longer time, and require more from God before they believe are likely less rewarded afterwards. We Catholics believe that the more we think of God in this life, the more we try to understand Him, His likes and dislikes, and take effort in attempt to build a relationship, and love Him, the happier we'll be for eternity. And then one day everyone will regret not having done more, and will wish they could come back to earth, to do better and get more reward.

@@georgewagner7787 I was gonna mention The Abolition of Man, too, along our educational system's decline. I'd never noticed before, though, until I'd heard someone else say, that Lewis' "fiction" novel, "That Hideous Strength", was/is like the "acting out, in story form", the things he wrote about in "The Abolition of Man"! I cherish BOTH books!
@aslprincess3944

@@flashlitestriker4028 Yeah it is. Actually all of his books have a fictional and non fictional pairing. The Four Loves has "Till We Have Faces." The Weight of Glory has "The Great Divorce." And some people suggest that his Narnia books reflect his writings on the old Space Model, and so does his Space trilogy. And Surprised by Joy and Mere Christianity have "The Pilgrim's Regress", though that is more allegorical than fictional. I took a course on Lewis when I was still in highschool, I recommend the Hillsdale Course if you want to learn more about his parallels in writing.

G. K. Chesterton also predicted it in both "Orthodoxy" and "What is Wrong with the World", he was a contemporary of Lewis, so I recommend checking him out. Basically, British education was just a little ahead of America when it came to accepting these ideas, because Europe tends to start fads, and Germany and France embraced this way of thinking also. Then America followed because our cultures are so linked together, muck like Zen Buddhism has spread because we share so much media with Japan, and now Korea also. You want to understand why any education system changes, look at who they share media and entertainment with, and who's paying for it, and you'll have your answer. Before the 60s, most of our entertainment was kept within our own country, so the American style of schooling was still prevalent, but TV changed all that as soon as it went international. Which is also why schools now push for cultural awareness and global identity. We're all one, we're all connected. Even if it is true in a sense, it removes the need for any country to have its own standards, and while that's helped some countries to become less harsh, in turn it has weakened the Free World's ideology, meaning we can swing back to the same problems we just tried to fix 50 years ago. And there you have the modern drive to segregation that was what we were supposed to be eliminating. Anwya, sorry for the long comment, i don't know if anyone really wanted to disucss this, but I'm a huge Lewis fan, and I don't meet too many other people even online who know anything about this side of his writing.

As a human I believe feelings drove Jesus to Jerusalem his feeling to forgive human sins is knowing of human nature being selfish but as a few find the narrow path a few would tell the selfish God's will to create men in his image and likeness but if God were perfect he'd not flood the earth or destroy Sodom and Gomorrah give his begotten son or have the serpent beguile Eve what his perfection is telling the truth about his creation and how vanity of vanities it is all vanity. You can say I am a materialist because I interpret the words differently being flawed I don't go to church or pray makes me this or that but loving the Bible is materialistic and claiming love for Jesus makes you perfect rather than loving human correction of it's flawed nature we are imperfect to understanding knowledge and therefore lack wisdom proves our fear of hell clinging to hopes for heaven. Who said thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven? Think about that we wrestle with God who is the word.

There’s this set of circumstances you’re tied to. It’s in the foundation of this universe. Pay attention, there is no coincidence. God exists. The Bible is truth. We all see these clips in reality. Where we know we’re being talked to. By the universe. We explain it away for our own sanity. What we want, and the things we must do to obtain them, verses what we learn God wants. It’s hard to get those two on the same level. But the shock of knowing what we must give up causes so many to avoid digging deeper. There are reasons why. Poison exists on a spiritual level, sin taints our immortal souls. It isn’t that we’re bad. It’s that Satan attached a curse to actions we take, claiming us as him. Like a drowning man tying himself to your ankles. God offers the knife to free yourself. Grace is a free gift God wants to give us all. It removes that stain of sin on our souls by forgiving the mistakes we made in ignorance. It’s just that God has a nature he cannot control. As our loving father he cannot give to one without another. He has to give us our own free will, one and all if anyone. Sin is something that takes many forms, and we all fall short of the glory of God. Being perfect isn’t the point. It’s about forgiveness. God can’t blanket forgive sins just because he knows our life’s circumstances. That’s forgive the devil too, considering he was an angel and only sinned one. Again, God can’t do for one child without the other. We have far more sins by count. He’s responsible for all the evil on earth, but it is the humanity that carried out his will. God has made standers we all must reach spiritually in life. Soul growth and development that shows faith. Shows that we’ve taken the teachings of Jesus Christ to heart. It’s all about forgiveness. To be forgiven we must forgive. It all starts at the heart, at home, with our family. Those people that have loved us, sheltered, fed, etc. working though the grievances we all build up with our parents is a huge spiritual milestone. That’s really what sets everything into motion as an adult. Once that gear grins freely the next fall into place so smoothly. Jesus Christ is lord. It’s something you learn inside once you clear out that inner baggage. You bleed your heart clean though your eyes. You understand why you need to submit to Jesus Christ and ask for forgiveness. Everything you ever need is in three books of the Bible. Genesis explains the problem, why these circumstances are so important. Mathew explains what’s been done to fix the system. And just one more, one book of the Bible you chose yourself. I Suggest James. It has many interesting lessons condensed and straightforward. Please trust me. I know how it sounds. It really does all begin with the inner work of forgiveness. It teaches your soul so many important lessons. Jesus Christ is the way truth and life. 😊 😊😊

“The Screwtape Letters” is one of my C.S. Lewis favorites! You can reread it over and over again too! The problem you have when you read great authors is you can’t read modern authors anymore. Modern authors are to “see spot run” for me now. Modern authors use too many words to explain nothing. Plots are not believable. I read a couple modern Pulitzer Prize winners and the writing was good but the storyline and plot were not. Endings were let downs. Can not read modern authors anymore. 😊 😊😊

It's an amazing book, one of my favourites. Lewis' way to write is just delicious, beautifully clear and terse but at the same time delightful in its eloquence. In my opinion one doesn't have to agree with him on the religious parts of the book to recognize that he makes very good points surrounding the world and society and manages to catch and put on the paper something very profound about the human nature. And, of course, the book is entertaining as well. I usually don't like novels that are written in letter form, but here Lewis makes it work.

@@northstar2621 Very delicious book. You're quite right in that morality is measurable in human nature thus as relevant for the unreligious as religious. Late Gen Z shows the effect today's society has on kids. Weak victims who have lost all purpose except the little imaginary power they get from the ability to get offended and feel justified. Wonder how many will actually survive.

A lot of brilliant minds from decades ago predicted what was going to happen today. CS Lewis could see it coming and also if you ever listen to Paul Harvey "if I were the devil " was a very good rendition of what today is.

I love C.S. Lewis even though I'm not Christian. I have read dozens of his books over the course of my lifetime. He was a great thinker. I don't agree with many of his ideas of course, but it is a pleasure to engage with such intelligent and creative writing. Some of his most profound thinking fits so much more in Jewish thought than in Christianity. Unfortunately, despite having married a Jewess, he shows tremendous ignorance about Judaism. I wonder if he had lived today with greater access to historic information as well as Jewish teaching online if he would have discovered more insight and context about Jewish writing and moved on from Christianity.

Having read The Screwtape Letters many times, along with pretty much everything else Lewis has written, I can honestly say that he was not only wiser than most writers I've read or people I've heard speak, but prescient to an extent that amazes. And if you think this book reveals this about him, read the third book of his Space Trilogy, That Hideous Strength. It's correlation to contemporary events is absolutely uncanny.
