Jason, is absolutely correct. We can't take our best sport cards to a bank, and use it as a down payment. I think I share a similar thought on the hobby. Most cards are not investments at least not in a more traditional way though, it is possible to make profit from the cards you do buy. It's difficult to time the market in any industry. For myself, I am playing the long game. Holding on to my cards for 5 years, or 10 years maybe more. I don't know if they will be worth more then, or I expect them to. Just a wait and see approach....

Jason is definitely right in this point! Some cards are more liquid than others but still take time and effort to move. I think 5-10 years is interesting, my guess is, most won’t be up above inflation during that stretch but maybe I’m wrong and fanatics 10X the hobby! 😜 Thanks for watching and commenting Andrew!

Enjoyed the episode Theo. This was my introduction to listening to Jason and he is well worth paying attention to. Well done guys. While I won’t pour any cold water on your vault comments, I would like to express some ideas that might show a different point of view. Here is a real life use a a vault story. I purchased a T206 gold border Walter Johnson graded a 3 in an auction and had it sent to PWCC. By doing so, I avoided the 7% sales tax of sending to my house. After 90 days, I can have it sent to me and the cost is 1% of the insuranced valve plus shipping. So, I save about $150 by delaying receiving the card leaving me with more funds to buy cards. Further, the card was awarded a PWCC top 15% eye appeal grade which I believe enhances the valve of the card. Keep up the good work.

I do think a lot of collectors wouldn’t want to wait 90 days for a card but I’m always trying to save money for my budget, so it’s a great tip and I’m happy to share with others! Excellent video. I personally believe that waaaaay too much emphasis is being put on the slab. The #1thing TPGs need to address is their consistency. And PSA needs to ditch the unsightly baggies. Such an ugly presentation with the card residing diagonally within the slab. I crack those out every time.

I will always say that i wish the hobby gravitated to ‘Authenticated’ slabs only 15-20 years ago. The grade has become so ridiculous that a modern PSA 9 Mint is looked at as the red-headed step child. Think about that for a second, a portion of the hobby totally disregards a Mint grade when they get their cards graded? If the hobby would have gravitated to slabs that were Authentic’ without a grade, i believe this ridiculous high market would not exist, and the hobby overall would be less expensive. Back in the days of raw cards, it was impossible for a dealer to inflate a card to a ridiculous price as it had to pass the eye test with the buyer. Now a card gets a high grade, and it’s a license to price out a majority of the hobby.

All great points! I personally would like the grading company’s to grade- auth, poor, good, ex, mint or something like that and literally they are ranges. Like anything between an 8.5-10 gets the Mint and you judge for yourself. Graders have way too much power! But I don’t mind your authentic point. The cards need to matter more than the grades but unfortunately, it doesn’t feel some believe that sometimes. Thanks for watching!
