🔺 Our Mission 🔺
Founded in 1997 in Cedar City Utah, we are a 501c3 non-profit organization dedicated to wildlife rescue, rehabilitation and education.
Rescue, Rehabilitate and Release
The Southwest Wildlife Foundation of Utah (SWF) cares for more than 100 sick, injured and orphaned native wildlife annually. Restoring them to health and returning them to the wild is our primary goal.
Informing, Educating and Inspiring
The SWF provides over 100 educational programs reaching over 30,000 people annually. We believe providing educational outreach programs to schools, scout groups and community events, with focus on children and families, will make the greatest impact in preserving our wildlife, the environment, our public lands and our resources for future generations to enjoy.
Martin Tyner
Since age twelve, with a bird on his arm, Martin has captivated audiences sharing his knowledge and experience of his wildlife friends.
At age nineteen, Martin was hired as curator of birds of prey at Busch Gardens, CA. He also worked in the movie and television industry training big cats, elephants, primates, sea mammals and raptors.
“One of my greatest childhood fantasies was the desire to create a personal friendship with a wild eagle. I found myself with a love and fascination for these powerful creatures.”
Martin Tyner is a federally licensed falconer, eagle falconer, wildlife rehabilitator, wildlife propagator, and wildlife and environmental educator.
He has been providing wildlife and environmental programs throughout the western United States, to schools, scouts and community groups for over fifty years.
“Grandpa believed in a very simple philosophy; that a person should get up every morning and do good. Doing good means that you do well for others and doing well means that you do good for yourself. There is nothing wrong with doing well, but Grandpa always believed in doing good.”
Martin's book, Healer of Angels, reflects back on his life: from a young boy terrified of birds to becoming the first man in North America licensed to train a wild golden eagle in the ancient art of falconry.
Through a heartwarming collection of true stories he describes his challenging transformation from a shy dyslexic teenager, to the founder and CEO of the Southwest Wildlife Foundation.

I think vultures are beautiful and amazing birds. We have both Turkey and Black Vultures here. I have rescued 2 Turkey Vultures which were released when healed. One of those was an older bird, vet said at least 10 yrs old, that got his leg right above his foot in a leg hold trap set for a coyote. I took him to the vet and got permission from a game warden who was a good friend, to keep and rehab the bird. He had one foot so really wasn't sure if he could be released when healed. After months of doctoring and medicating and working on balance issues he was released. Over the next few years I would occasionally see him feeding with his family. About 4 years after his released a friend found him on the road dead. He was hit by a car. Nearby was a partially eaten rabbit carcass. I was so sad but took comfort knowing that I gave him a chance and was able to release him to live a wild free life. I love the way you and your wife handle the birds so gently and talk soothingly to them. Best part is when you release them. Thanks for all that you do.

I like the turkey vultures. We have quite a few around here. The only animal on earth that can eat anthrax and live. They are awesome fliers. The natural gas companies know they have a leak in the ground when they see vultures circling with no carcass. We also have black head vultures here. God's clean up crew. Great birds. Glad to see this one make a full recovery.

I don't know if any gas companies still do it, but I read years ago that one way for them to find a leak on their pipeline systems was to introduce- and I can't remember how they actually did it- a carrion odor into the system and then drive the pipeline and look for circling vultures to get them in the ballpark of the leak.

We have turkey vultures here in Iowa. They love to roost is the tall ash trees. They can make quite a mess in my backyard! You might see 30 or so early in the morning or at dusk. It’s fun to watch them fly. I’m just wondering where all these dead animal carcasses can be that support such a big population. We always know when spring has come back to Iowa when we see the turkey vultures circling in the sky.

Sorry Martin but actually I was waiting for this beauty to poo-shoot on you 😅 oops ! It’s a beautiful bird when I went to see Fl bald eagles I saw their juvie soaring with these vultures. It’s magical (and actually BE follow turkey vultures because they have great smell sense and find carcass - well that’s what BE specialists said) As usual thank you 🙏 for everything you’re doing
