I bet this car turns more heads than a Ferrari :) Really one of the most iconic cars ever! Up there with the Delorean from Back to the Future, the Trans Am from Knight Rider, the Charger from Dukes of Hazzard and Starky's Grand Torino... I've seen replicas of all these cars up close, I even have a picture, somewhere, of me as a kid sitting in K.I.T.T. But I've never seen a Herbie replica this good.

You hit the nail on the head! This car had such a crazy crowd around it. When the show died down the owner was giving rides in it to little kids. I love how cars shape our lives and movie/ tv show cars help fuel the passion even from a young age! I am so jealous you got to sit in KITT. I saw it one at a World of Wheels cars show back in the 1980's. I will never forget that moment! Thanks for sharing your experiences.

The biggest flaw for the "new beatle" (now not anymore) was reliability issues. The automatic transmission was just one of the worst I've seen ever and the engine overheated for no apparent reason. On top of that it is European, mechanics hated to have to deal with this cars. Add that to the marketing issues and you have a total desaster. It did sell well when it was first introduced but then the reliability issues started to show and for some reason it became the car for certain group of people. I do have mad respect for the old beatle and the amazing idea of creating an air cooled engine. Great review Joe!! You always bring this reviews that not everyone dare to bring to the table. Thank you for another great review!! You put the car community ahead of the possible views you could get. Mad respect for that.

I totally agree with you about the current VW bug. There is just no substitute for those old air-cooled bugs that came before it. This car was drawing such a big crowd. I appreciate your kind words about putting the community first! Some cars just need to be reviewed no matter what the amount of views will be and this is one of those examples! The owner was so nice and excited that I wanted to film his car. I really couldn't think of a better example!

My dream is to buy and restore a 1963 VW Beetle and make it look like Herbie from the 1974 movie Herbie Rides Again with the hood mounted fog lamp, dark navy blue racing stripe in the pattern, stock VW chrome badge on the bonnet, stock VW wheels with the beautiful hubcaps. However he’ll have the faster 1,800 CC engine with dual carburetor along with the retractable antenna from Herbie Goes Bananas, darker canvas rag top sunroof from Herbie Goes To Monte Carlo, and 200 mph Speedometer from Herbie Fully Loaded :) That’s my dream Herbie that’s on my bucket list to build

Our first family car 1966 beetle, 1300 cc, off white color. This brings back good memories. Like the door small swivel window. Its a manual refreshing wind blower into my face. Great review of the Beetle Joe. I had a '67 and if I remember correctly, there were handles on the floor in between the driver and passenger seats and that's how you obtained your heat and air. No, not Air Conditioning, just "air." lol Of course the heat handle had a red knob and the air handle had a blue knob. Yeah, it was so high tech the Germans figured we needed every visual aide possible to help us keep track of what did what. LOL Mine didn't have a radio. Thank goodness, that would have had five buttons to push which would have completely be-fuddled me. :-) Hard to believe only 1,300 CC's whereas my Big Dog Mastiff has 1, 750 CC's. lol Save the Wave, even if it's from a VW Beetle.

That is so awesome of you to share some memories from your experience. The VW air-cooled engine will always be special to me because I had some of my best races in my old Formula Vee car. You would be amazed how well those cars draft at Daytona coming out of the bus stop chicane! Save the car passion!

"Formula V!?" Boy, I haven't heard reference to them since you were born. LOL One of the stepping stone cars for those who had a dream to race in open wheeled Formula or Indy Cars. Maybe you can tell me who was behind their development, because they were brilliant in design and function and by all rights, low maintenance. I often refer to myself as just a "Pavement Putter," but whether it's on pavement, or in the yard or on the green, always with "Passion."

Peter Carey that was the road that I was on to Indy cars! I went from Formula, Vee, Formula Ford, finally Formula Mazda. It seems like just a dream all these years later. For 3 years I did nothing but race full-time. I raced in 67 races over that time. I had some of my best races in Formula Vee. To answer your question, Formula Vee was started in 1959 by a Florida VW dealer by the name of Hubert Brundage. It was recognized as an official class by the SCCA in 1963. Now I’m getting a little sad.

Thanks so much Joe. I didn't realize the Formula Vee went back 1959. (As a side note, I'm kinda fond of '59. I had a red '59 Chevy impala with a Stone Crusher 348 w/3 deuces.) Joe, your life can absolutely change because of a VW Beetle! My uncle who was a surgeon in Vietnam and is a practicing surgeon to this day owned a black 1970 Beetle. I was about 5 years old and I remember clear as yesterday riding in that small space in between the back seat and the window. Yeah that small space! He kept that Beetle for 25+ years and he would drive it when his Jaguar XJ6 was in the shop! Which to no ones surprise very often. The Beetle never broke. The only thing that bothers me about the Beetle is the Nazi scumbag who along with Fernando Porsche designed the Bug. Still I can’t help but love the classic old ones. The new ones do nothing for me. Give me a 5 door 6 speed manual GTI (Same platform) and call it a day. Hey Joe....wow I just had a Jimi Hendrix flashback, could you please do a review of a VW GTI ??
