My favorite bit of laconic dialogue from Cary Grant comes from his exchange with Audrey Hepburn in the film "Charade": Cary Grant: "Oh, you should see your face." Audrey Hepburn: "What's the matter with it?" Cary Grant: "It's lovely." Nuff said... 😊
@Gent.Z7 күн бұрын
That is one of my favorite all-time movies. I read that Cary had such chemistry with Audrey that he had to tape himself 'down there' to stop it from showing.
@Mrvictorfernandes7 күн бұрын
@@Gent.Z That story is very, very true, and their chemistry was so potent it inspired Audrey to ad-lib the line "unless it's called for" after saying to Cary "I don't bite, you know!" Cary loved working with her very much and said, "Audrey is like steel; she bends but she never breaks."

There’s another brand of classic gentlemen, and it’s what I would call the Jimmy Stewart archetype. Look at George Bailey from it’s a wonderful life. Sure, he looks the part with that classic menswear, but he’s also a kind, gracious, infinitely generous man, devoted husband and father, and an all-around good guy. Spotlighting George in a future video might offer another perspective on gentlemanliness in it’s different forms

@thechairman742 күн бұрын
@@mat7083 The difference between the Thomas Crown's is that that the Brosnan one is a bit more mature. Both actors are in their mid to late 40s, as opposed to McQueen being late 30s and Faye Dunaway being late 20s in the original. Just a different feeling. I think the idea of presenting seduction in a film depends a great deal on the ages of the characters. I don't get worked up about age differences now like a lot of people do, but the idea of seduction between a mid 50s Grant and a mid 40s Bergman and having ten years age difference is much more acceptable than if they were twenty years younger.

Great analysis, James! Cary Grant has always been my favorite. Although George Clooney started taking over that position years ago when he did the Oceans movies. His calm deliberate approach to Julia Roberts almost seemed like a more easy-to-copy version of Cary Grant. And of course, Clooney has been called the modern, American Grant for a long time. I'd love to see you do a video of the Clooney seduction style, and compare/contrast it to Cary Grant's.

As I'm not that much of a 50's movie buff, I can't think of anyone more suitable for this kind of example than Cary Grant. For more of a current day (well...nearly 20 years ago now) actor, I've always admired the Don Draper character portrayed by Jon Hamm in Mad Men. While the character had a mind-bendingly complicated and dark back story, just the everyday carriage, gait, and gravitas presented by Jon Hamm I think is very hard to top.
@thechairman747 күн бұрын
The most important thing about the Hamm/Draper performance was the period setting. It helped a lot and I doubt that if Hamm had played a modern character it would have worked as well.

Yet another quality video, brimful of wisdom on the two sexes (and for the avoidance of doubt/woke 'gender cult' devotees, yes, there are only two sexes). It's impressive you are directly and exclusively aiming these videos at your fellow man. You clearly have much wisdom to impart. But alas I must bring a note of reluctant dissent to my comments here. You quoted the late, great Cary Grant's view that style is somewhere 'in the middle' of fashion. So true! Cary would never wear suit trousers like the currently fashionable, too-snug, too-short, 'ankle swingers' you are sporting at the end of this video. Please study the suit cuts (and especially trouser lengths) of classic style icons of yesteryear like Grant, who knew how a suit should be cut. A man's ankles are not a feature that should be drawn attention to. Ditto men's legs generally, which are wiry/muscly, and not flattered by the skintight, skinny jeans look, which can be so sexy on women's curves. Male and female legs are starkly different!

I do have a question here. No doubt, James and Cary Grant gave me a masterclass in conducting myself around women, particularly those i have a romantic interest in. But then how many of the lessons we learn here, could actually be applied onto the present-day woman? To be fair, only few women today would carry and conduct themselves like Ingrid Bergman did herself. I hate to say it, the modern day woman seems to favor the more nasty type of men. I fear Cary Grant's style of approaching the present-day woman might be wasted on her because she, in all likelihood, may fail to comprehend such classy behaviour. A man displaying such gentemanly conduct is more likely to be dismissed, as a 'grandpa'. Pardon the verbosity. I felt i needed to be so to better explain the situation.
