Two things: If a third grade boy can get a world record, it can't be particularly important (or it's ridiculously hard and we're all wondering how they did it, there is no middle) And also, when I changed schools in 4th grade (don't send your kids to religious schools) one of the first things I read was a story of a 7 year old girl setting a record* for youngest pilot. At the time I was annoyed that I was already too old, and then later I began wondering about the legality of a 7 year old flying an airplane. Oh... I just looked it up for details. Turns out I made out alright. She did not set the record. Or do anything else for that matter. It was promoted as a record setting attempt, but the beer company discontinued Youngest Pilot 7 years prior for similar reasons to this crash. (and it's not real anyway) (Min age 16 for medical cert, 17 for licensing)

Honestly, the most surprising thing about the the Guinness and its relationship with Turkmenistan is that out of all of the records set in or by Turkmenistan, only one of them - fastest 10m by a horse on hind legs (4.19 seconds) - involves Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow and a horse. The guy owns over 600 horses with those horses specifically being Akhal-Tekes; a breed of horse that Berdimuhamedow owns around 10% of. He's also gifted Akhal-Tekes to multiple other world leaders, written poetry and multiple books about Akhal-Tekes, and has instructed officials to do extra checks on journalists at the airport he fell off a horse during an event in an attempt to ensure no one could see him fall of the horse. The fact there is _only one_ world record involving him and horses is genuinely unbelievable.

Here's my thing re: 3 minute selfies. What is classified as a selfie? Can it be just by yourself of your own face, or does it have to be alongside someone else as the celebrities have done? Can video be a selfie? All videos are just lots and lots of still images played really quickly, so could a sped up 3 min video of someone's face be the most selfies??? I found out about their marketing things ages ago, I think when they started doing it or at least doing it more. I had kind of become a bit fed up with them before that, despite my childhood collection of record books, because they are making such niche and unbreakable/unrepeatable records that it doesn't feel fun anymore. I think a record should be something that has some kind of measurement to it, like a quantity or a mass or literally just any kind of provable number that can be measured and competed against. And so many don't anymore and it is just not interesting. People used to say that everyone had one novel in them if they sat down and wrote it, I think that's turned into everyone's got one record inside of them if they found the most extremely niche thing they can force themselves into. That's boring. The point is that most people don't have records, that they're something special!!!

About the most trusted celebrity thing... I knew that something was wrong when in about 2008 or something they did "Most overrated person". Not only is that a matter of opinion, but it's by definition a matter of SPLIT opinion. Someone can't be officially overrated because you'd have to have a general consensus that they are great... and then a smaller voice saying that they're not. Are Guinness saying that the smaller voice is correct?

Before watching that video I didn't realize how much the Guinness World Records have faded out of relevancy. And this goes beyond the typical issues faced by other printed media. I could imagine an uchronia where we would have fun reading the digital version while drinking with friends in a pub. Back in the 1990s, you had to watch some specific TV shows or attend some live performances to see people doing outlandish stunts. Thanks to what the Internet has become, there's no shortage of outlandish or over-the-top stuff. There are also listicles to show you random facts. The story of GuudeBoulderfist isn't very surprising in our datacracy era since there are enough metrics available on the web to make some "record mining".

I was literally just wondering today whether there is anyone alive who still remembers WWI; I imagine she still does at least a little. It has not yet passed totally out of living memory.

The biggest factor for long life expectancy is *not having an official birth certificate*. In other words she may be just as bs as the other record holders.

what started as a way to settle bar bets morphed into flashy picture books for children and illiterates then further devolved into a pay-to-play PR service. the 1976 edition is iconic; it’s been all downhill ever since.
