Aha yes!!! So thankful to see another video like this. Im a roofer and have been for 4 years going on 5 and this is indeed how you do chimney flashing. Ive done it multiple times with my boss and the head boss didnt know what he was doing. Boy did he and the home owner love the end results

No. The proper step flashing goes underneath and is now hidden. The long angle cut is definitely proper counter flashing on a retrofit roof.

That bottom flange should be under shingles with at least 6 inches with a hem and the hem carries water out of bottom shingle

Never cut the brick in areas subject to freezing conditions. ...as in this case. Counter flashing should be imbedded in steps with the bond of the brick mortar joints , allowing a better resilience to freeze thaw joint failure and leakage. I have seen Fifty year longevity , of properly installed stepped lead and copper counter flashing in mortar joints in New England....by my father and I ...and old work by craftsman prior to our era... installed over a hundred years ago

I daon know where that guy is, but here in Texas, freezing isn't really much of a concern. We are running 103 degree for our average high right now, and freezing precipitation every 4-5 years. So not needed everywhere.

Create a sideways "V" on the brake and use a rubber mallet to lightly hammer it in. Than caulk. Holds wayyy better. And Better waterproofing

There are two parts two flashing like that. There is step flashing underneath attached to the roof. What you see above is essentially a hood attached to the chimney that sits over the step flashing.

I don't know about the flashing under that, but I do know the splashing you see is usually galvalume (which will last longer than galvanized) that is painted.

@@michaelj.k.9408 I do. Started Roofing in 2004! Extremely rare to see a roofer tied-off. In fact, I have only seen it on TV and when the pitch is too steep, and tying-off is the only way to stay on. It's not like walking I-Beams and cat walks. You have an extremely large flat surface. Do you tie off to clime a ladder? Because statistically, that is a greater fall hazard than walking on a roof. Perceived danger and actual danger are NOT the same thing. This is purely perceived danger on your part.

100%WRONG! The 1" Continuous cut through all the face of the brick have now compromised the structural integrity of the masonry chimney. This roofer has destroyed the masonry structure of your chimney. I would recommend taking the chimney down to just below the roofline re stacking all bricks and relaying all the brick in new mortar , building a new concrete crown, installing proper masonry counterflashing embedded into each mortar joint to allow each brick and each course to independently, expand and contract with one another during ice and snow exposure. This guy does build chimneys. He is looking to cut corners for a faster install so he doesn't consult a certified chimney professional. I have seen heat escaping cuts in chimney before with this flashing method. Your creating a control joint basically. The thermal expansion and contraction of building materials will result in poor bonds and shattering bricks.
