I did my chimney June 2019 , I used mortar so I did not have to chip and cut 3 to 6 inch into the stone added a Cricket cut into the mortar 3/4 for the counter flashing , Did the same bend on the top the lip holds tight that wedge is the only way to go .

Next time blow off all the dust hit it with a wire brush and blow off again you will never have another bond issue. Also look into getting slicks or caulking spatulas from albion will keep your fingers cleaner and will prevent any debonding issues. When you run empty on bottle of caulk, do not throw away the nozzle, put it on the new bottle, so you save a nozzle amount of caulk with every new bottle. Though it works only for a single session.

I think the gripping fold causes a hassle because once the unit is pushed in the groove of the stone for adjustments it can't be pulled out easily. I have seen a video where installers left that edge straight, made all the measurement and adjustments they need, where after placing the unit in place wedged it with a folded up line of strip of sheet metal at 5 or so places and that was that.

A speed square and a nice pair of snips will save you from having to get off the roof, hoof it to the break, measure and slice, and get back up. You could get your measurement of 1 3/4, speed square a flat line across the piece and be installing it before you would have hit the bottom of the ladder! You seem really good at scoring with the knife too, and that is even faster than snips - if you trust your hands :P Edit: wrote that out before I knew you were hemming the piece. In this case. you would have had to come down anyways.

Was that coil stock? 🤔 I like the 2" rigglet into the stone and I've always preferred using a one piece system over the two piece wall and counter. Saves valuable time in the heat plus no chance of wash over on backside. I prefer to use a 26g metal due to our roofers around here suck and will destroy anything thinner. Just curious to cost of labor and materials you getting for a job like that on a standard 6/12 pitch?

Keep a thin paint brush to brush out the joint first ,then caulk the joint before you install the metal. Install the metal. Then buy a 3/8" caulk knife at a commercial caulk store and you wont get it on your finger nor rake the crap out of your finger.
