Hi OneNews. This was a bit disappointing in terms of helping the public engage with the key question security raised. It was also unnecessary to try and joke about NZ’s joint maritime expeditionary power at the end after NZ Chief of Army had stated that the two key security concerns evaluated by the NZ Government were climate change and geopolitical uncertainty/instability - how else can NZ as a remote island nation move heavy or large volumes of equipment or personnel in times of national or regional emergency? No aircraft options exist for that, especially during degraded climate change events that often destroy air expeditionary infrastructure or deny air mobility. Lastly, Army combat capability is far wider and more complex than just artillery pieces, especially for NZs region of interest, and understanding which key components of combat power are ‘need to have’ compared to ‘like to have’. In summary, please do better, this is an important topic, not just for the immediate security questions, but also because a safe and secure region also creates the conditions for continued investment for economic, trade and research, science and technology prosperity.

We've never really been a military state. We relied on the fact that we're so far away for anyone to do anything. That's a good plan in the 1930s-40s but in 2023. It's a bad plan as ships and planes can carry more troops and tanks to new Zealand in less time.

But your right the world around us has changed and the big boys of the nuclear club are starting to gather around eachother pulling their pants down to see who's got the biggest rakau 😅. Technology has improved and so has military hardware. Our independent foreign policy, which we've always relied on is the only way to go, and to not pick sides with our traditional friends and allies but rather try and be a voice of reason and peace. I know we can definitely play our part here admirably!!! All the while maintaining a small credible combat ready reaction force element of nzdf...

@steveotene1443 personally think we need to develop our own guns at minimum. We normally by Americans last tec. So when America has new tec. They sell their olds tec over seas. Would be nice to try keep up. Try find a way to improve what we brought off them. Instead of waiting for them to create something better and sell the old stuff on. Edit: it will cost the government to set up but if the guns are any good. We can create a few extra and sell them to Australia etc. It covers the cost of making the guns and also helps Australia have modern tec as well.

We would need rather dramatic investment into the DF to get a carrier, even it is just a helicopter one. Biggest problem with our current force, more so in artillery is out lack of drone support which is crucial in Ukraine.

The way i see it, we need more frigates, first and foremost, we need bigger guns, with longer ranges and new types of ammunition. Thats at the very least, to give us some sort of force projection, then we need to look at capability with land and air assets. Currently the only assets we have is a couple of people in special forces roles, in terms of every other capability we are lacking. Brings us back to lack of investment, ultimately we should be look at defence exports, inwhich we can add something to the collective. Otherwise we will struggle and highly likely be reliant in capturing assets if any conflict broke out as we wouldn't have the equipment to wage any sort of effective campaign beyond 1-2000 personnel who would be rendered combat ineffective in less then a week.

The usa are the largest arms manufactures and exporters in the world making billions every year off war and the death of millions of innocent civilians woman, children and elderly. The united states military are the largest climate poluters of our planet in the history of the world. Your smartphone also uses Russia’s SatNav system.. they also have an entire isle dedicated to cola, not just Coke or Pepsi in their fully stocked supermarkets. Most international retailers are still paying market rent for all their outlets there itching to get back in. China has even more success stories. Only gang ridden cities lock down spray paints behind security grates… but that’s been the norm in NZ for decades. Best little army on earth. It's not the numbers it's the quality, full of kiwis a lot of good can be and has been done by it's little roles around the world historically and to present day. Fortunately we can scale quality efficiently. it hasn't been needed for a long time in a artillery firing role more as trusted peacekeepers and builders and educators, so for decades we have invested a lot of economic energy elsewhere. Well that didn't say much, it good the army train with other nations, due to the fact if Britain goes in we most likely will too, admittedly as an island nation we should concentrate on defense in the Pacific and the smaller islands also, army has some newish gear yet we less then 10,000 strong, don't think the new Hercs for air force have arrived yet, unless thay cancelled them lol, our frigates are only good for stopping un armed vessels and there due to be retired in 2030 with no talk of replacements, but I very much doubt we would be invaded by anyone as we have nothing of value for those that embrace wars

When you really look at how we are in a world sense with our military, you can appreciate as Kiwi people we have everything possible to worry about should another world war break out. Pretty sad, but as a nation & generations of governments have always relied on the US to protect us should it go pear shaped. Obviously today, the US is weakened significantly both militarily & clearly at home sociallly, & China is the new world power with some serious dirt to throw around. We shouldn't take our BBQ's & haka too lightly.....you never know what could happen in the years to come. We will reap what we sowed when it comes to our defence force. A shame our attitude as a nation (which reflects upon the generations of govts) is the way it is, because we either are or either aren't standing on the edge of a new massive conflict coming shortly. Our troops are some of the best in the world, but we have zero infrastructure, a few planes in the airforce & a few ships in the navy force so we're fkd if anyone hostile comes for us, we wouldn't last a week. But our soldiers are very well trained

Australia was sucked in to spending $300B+ to buy 6 US+6 British Nuclear Submarines, code-named AUKUS by their previous LNP (Conservative) govt by Trump and Boris ,as well as modernising Australian Ports to suit ,which wont be available for another 15 -30 yrs as those countries are still catching up on their own modernisations, Australian Defence Services (Air ,Army ,Navy ) are short on personnel across the board so not only NZ .With the cost of living crisis affecting countries around the world Australian's are unwilling to spend more on defence when people are homeless so their govt is trying to push New Zealand to do more in the Pacific. Australia, 29x times larger, 5x population, resources (Coal,Iron ore ,gold ,gas,critical minerals ) alone worth Trillions ,are sweating on NZ to take up the slack in the Pacific .NZ is a small Nation Militarily , strategically and financially but we've always punched above our weight ,so use common sense ,build our Armed Forces to suit our ability not someone else's, we'll always stand tall ,we always do !! 😡☻😎🤠😜☻🤬
