Peeta in the first movie said : “I don’t want them to change me…I just keep wishing I could think of a way to show them that they don’t own me. If I’m going to die, I want to still be me.” The one thing Peeta wanted, the one thing he held onto during the games, was taken away from him. His identity. Who he is. Who he loves. He’s become a piece for the Capitol to use. A puppet.

When finnick was giving the interview (at least book wise) he wasn't stalling at all. Remember when he told Katniss, back in Catching Fire, that he never deals with money when being paid, but actually with secrets. Secrets were his currency. In the interview he spills the tea not only about Snow using poison to kill his enemies, but about a lot of known people in the Capitol. I'm sure that was perfect for distraction because everyone was either curious to know everybody's secret or scared shitless to have him spill their secrets on national television.

@@dobby1327 she is not in Mockingjay until the very end. In the books, Effie is replaced with her style team. And without spoiling anything there’s no way they could’ve stuck to the book and kept this movie PG-13. It was a desperately needed change to keep the movie from being rated R.

@katiedidd7825

@@orlandocast7941 LOTS OF SPOILERS BELOW 👇 TURN BACK NOW IF YOU WANT TO READ THE BOOKS!! ******* the reason why Mockingjay specifically would be rated R is because we get to see the bloody carnage and what district 13 is really like. Katniss style team got captured by the rebels. District 13 kept any capital citizens were held as prisoners of war. The scene after where she was demanding immunity for the victors is where she found her style team locked up in a cage, tied up, beaten, naked and made to use the bathroom in a floor drain. Katniss demanded that her style team be free from the torture chamber. This prompted Gale and Katniss’s first fight. Gale was pissed that she had sympathy for them. Effie, being a guest among 13 is the least faithful adaption, but it was one of the most welcome. That book is too damn bleak. Other spoilers include: Joanna has no family because she refused to be a sex slave Victor. Snow killed her family in retaliation. Peeta and Joanna are being tortured by watching Avoxes be slaughtered limb-by-limb Joanna is bald from how she was tortured- she wouldn’t say where the rebels were, so they water boarded her head in a tub with an electric current running through the water. Finnick behaves sexually inappropriate as a means of flirting, but in a very uncomfortable way. His Catching fire costume was just a fishing net wrapped around his waist, and nothing else. He started the stripping scene that only Joanna does to make fun of Katniss' prudishness. All the victors got naked to tease her. The entire capital wanted to buy him at 14, but Snow wouldn't allow it until he turned 16. (How merciful). Annie is mentally insane. She is the most unstable person in the entire series. She was reaped at 18 and she watched her male tribute partner get decapitated. She never recovered from that. I’m guessing that’s why they didn’t play up her mental illness. The force field is used to prevent the tributes from committing suicide. It’s not like in battle Royale, where they had a choice. You must fight. If you attempted suicide, the force field would just put you back up on the ledge. The bodies are taken out of the arena so they won’t be cannibalized. The capital has legitimate, betting odds against the tributes. The original movie does show the betting odds for a split second so you can see that Rue has 60:1 odds of winning. Hunting is illegal, but they both do it anyway to survive. Katniss trained Prim to sell cheese from her goat so she would have a skillset and not have to prostitute for food to a peacekeeper after she turned 18. Katniss and Gale put their names in dozens of times for each ineligible family member who was too young/old for more food. You cannot get extra government rations over 18 or under 12. I did not expect to write that novel.

Unpopular opinion, but this is probably my favorite of the series. The tone, the politics, the bravery, the manipulation, and most of all the brutal depiction of the cost of war no matter whose side comes out on top. So many films use the backdrop of war as a means of glorifying an individual or a cause without allowing room to show real traumatic impact. It's a breath of fresh air to have a massively popular series choose a more realistic depiction, even if some aspects of the story are pure fantasy.

I agree too! I flip back and forth between catching fire and this one because I am a big sucker for everlark moments and we get the most of that content in catching fire but as the years have passed this one has slowly creeped it's way up in my ranking! It's truly the first time we get to sit with the trauma from the games in it's full capacity and how that has effected Katniss and the others. It is also the first time we can actually start to root for a more hopeful future. Plus acting wise I think some of the best acting in the franchise is in this movie! The fire is catching speech will forever send chills down my spine.

Even Peeta’s outfit reminds me of a glamorized straight jacket. The collar literally looks like it’s choking out his identity with that pointed piece in the front. His only wish was to die by his own terms and to not be changed and the Capitol took that one sliver of hope from him. @@MichelleMerinoArt Yeah, definitely. A lot of people interpret that to mean she refused to be sold, though I'm not sure I remember that ever being directly stated. I do think the line clearly indicates that for some perceived defiance, Joanna's loved ones were killed. Maybe related to sex slavery, maybe to something else. But it is pretty likely that Snow wanting to sell Katniss and Peeta's love story is probably the only thing that saved them from the same treatment (though they were still slaves to protect their loved ones).

Snow’s white rose he left for Katniss was a taunt. Snow wore these heavily scented roses to cover up his bad breath, that came from all the poison sores in his mouth. His favourite way of killing opponents was inviting them to dinner and poisoning the wine, which he also drank to avoid suspicion. Of course, he was always saved by a medical team but he did this so often that he developed these sores.

But I love them all, to be honest ! ^^ Just to clarify, Katniss did not sent the overcrafts down on the hospital when she shot them ! The editing of the scene make a lot of people think that, but it is not what happened. The hospital was already bombarded. And stopping the overcrafts didn't change a lot. They were coming back for a second attack. But the hospital was already burning.

Great reaction! 😊 RIP always to Philip Seymour Hoffman(Plutarch Heavensbee)!!! I love this two part movie more than the "Mockingjay" book. Mainly because Effie is in the movies more than the book. Katniss' new Mockingjay outfit is another one of my favorite outfits that Cinna had designed for her. This and Part 2 were filmed at the same time. And sadly Philip Seymour Hoffman passed away in the middle of the filming these last two movies. After you finish with "Mockingjay Part 2", I very highly recommend starting on the "Maze Runner" trilogy. I think you would love it! Looking forward to your next reaction for. 😊

The irony is, Snow could have ruled the Capitol till his death if he didnt keep try to kill Katniss. Pretty sure he deliberately messed with Quarter Quell to make sure Katniss was in it. I mean, if she wasnt in it, she might have just stated quiet in district 12. All he had to do was not to give her much attention in the coming years , so the people would eventually lose interest in them.
@essentiallyinvisible3572
@essentiallyinvisible3572 11 ай бұрын
I'm not sure what you mean by "pretty sure he deliberately messed with the Quarter Quell to make sure she was in it"? Snow and Plutarch chose to have the Tributes reaped from the existing pool of Victors and Katniss was the only female Victor from District 12 still alive. Aside from choosing to have the Victors in the Quarter Quell, Snow didn't have to mess with it to ensure Katniss had to take part. No other living District 12 woman had won the Hunger Games, so there wasn't anyone else it could have been.
@koszmarneoczy
@koszmarneoczy 10 ай бұрын
@@essentiallyinvisible3572 There's a running theory that the Quarter Quell games aren't pre-written, and are instead done depending on what the Capitol thinks is the best punishment to keep them in line at that point in time. It's not that they made Katniss a tribute, it's that they rewrote whatever the 75th games were originally supposed to be (Or it was blank to begin with and they filled it in with what was convenient).
@essentiallyinvisible3572
@essentiallyinvisible3572 10 ай бұрын
@@koszmarneoczy - I agree that they change it to what helps them in the moment, like in the film. What I was saying to the original comment was that Katniss had to be in it as soon as Snow decided to have the QQ be Victors, as Katniss was the only living female Victor from District 12. He didn't have to "mess" with it beyod that because there was nobody who could have been reaped instead of her. .. In the movie, at least, we see him discuss with Plutarch that he wants "their entire species" (Vicotrs) wiped out because they feel "invincible". That's when he announces that the Tributes will be reaped from the existing pool of Victors, ensuring Katniss will be in the QQ :) That's why I was wondering if the OC meant "Snow deliberately messed with it" to make it Victors-only, in which case, his motive was made clear in the movies, but I'm not sure about the books.

A couple of things. The actors are not much older particularly the one playing Peeta. He was 18 in the first movie and when they ended 22. Josh Hutcherson calls it his college/university. Jennifer Lawrence was 20 and Liam Hemsworth 21. During the years of filming and promoting these films they also did other projects. Jennifer did Silver Linings Playbook and received an Oscar for it. Josh produced and acted in Escobar: Paradise Lost and started a relationship with his co-star Claudia Traisac that continues to this day, splitting his time between Madrid and L.A. Also they had to cope with the death of Phillip Seymour Hoffman and how they would complete the Hunger Games saga without him.

The Hunger Games is one of those series that would often get reduced to the love triangle, and sadly i get why, with the whole marketing of "which team are you? team Gale or team Peeta?"- but the second you look closer into the whole thing it get's so messed up i swear. The poor girl is what? 16 to 17 years old? she's got horrible PTSD, has been dragged into one violent set up after another, into leading a revolution... she hasn't had time to breathe, let alone figure out if she wants to get with someone. She gives love more out of wanting to comfort others than out of real desire, mostly with Gale as he points out but also with Peeta: only a handful of kisses seemed to come to her naturally and only towards the end of the second movie. The whole thing is not really a love triangle, just a damn tragedy. Seems to me like she doesn't really consider romantic love til after everything is said and done and i can't blame her honestly

Astounding!!! This reaction is priceless!!! While I do agree that the film is slow due to it being only the first half of the book, I think it’s nice that it has this pacing because it supposed to be I think a representation of what Finnic just told Katniss that it takes a person longer to put themselves mentally back together after they breakdown. So over the film you see her trying to adapt to life in District 13 as well as struggling with being the Mockingjay, her trauma, and trying to find a way to get Peta out of the Capitol. I was on the edge when I was waiting for you to see Peeta go berserk. And if you loved Philip Seymour as Plutarch, I must recommend his film with Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton, Twister. 🐦‍⬛🏹😨😱❤️‍🔥

You seem so wholesome and like a greatly empathetic person, which makes your reactions very enjoyable. Stay positive and good luck with the channel.🍀 Also a (spoiler-free!) book-fact about Finnick that doesn't come across that well-explained in this movie (TW: SA): When Finnick holds his speech he actually reveals some facts about his past ever since he won the Games. In the capitol he is known to be very promiscuous, but what they don't know is that he actually was forced into s** trafficking by President Snow from the age of 14. For every time he would have refused, they would have killed somebody he loved. After a while, instead of taking money or expensive gifts, Finnick started to receive secrets as a sort of trade from his lovers, which is why he mentions in the second movie after Katniss asks: "How does someone pay for the pleasure of your company?" - "With secrets". Knowing that the Capitol has exercised that power over him for such a long time makes you really understand why he is so broken this whole movie and petrified that they are going to harm Annie. Not only is the Capitol not afraid to brutally maim or kill, there are also other things they can do to a person that may be much worse.

I think it's so great just how much you pick up on the internal struggle and turmoil going on. A lot of it is in the books, since it's a 1st person narrative so we know what Katniss is thinking (especially regarding her feelings for Peeta and Gale). The fact that you've caught so much of that internal struggle of hers (Not just regarding that relationship triangle hot mess, but also about the PTSD and how much is loaded onto her) from just the movie is a testament to not just the acting in the movie but your own empathy and ability to read people and really understand what would be going on in their heads. I don't know if I've really expressed this very clearly, but I'm just very impressed with your analysis of everything 💜

Finnick has always been one of my favourites, and I cried so hard when he died, and it was especially heartbreaking considering he won at 14 and then was prostituted and sold as a sex slave because of his good looks, then tried to fight back and help Katniss and was murdered by the mutts. It's horrific. He deserved so much better. I feel like he had to pretend he was a player to cover the abuse or be killed. Or he was pretending to be one to cover up the PTSD and horrors he went through, like fake it to make it, or he would've broken down. Shows how even the people from higher number districts are just as much a slave to the powerful people of the capitol as lower number districts, yes they have better food, resources, etc, but at the end of the day, no one, even if you're capitol citizen or higher number district, is safe, and how those in power will use you to their own advantage, even if you're young, old, District 1, District 12, they'll use you, and if you refuse to do as they say, they'll take everything from you, even family. To manipulate and control people using fear, is incredibly cruel. To manipulate children with PTSD from being forced to kill, is barbaric. Also i never got a good feeling about Coin, she felt like a female version of Snow, but just using fear and manipulation tactics more subtly. Two sides of the same coin. Hate the pair of them. And I feel for Snow's granddaughter, she has no idea how much of a monster her grandfather is, and is only shown the glory of the Games. 😢 It's an amazing film. ❤
