So fun fact.. I suffered a brain injury from septicemia meningitis.. doctors wanted me on big pharma, meds.. I found a study from the Ukraine about treating sever mental illness by using creatine.. needless to say, I went that latter route.. I honestly never felt better and ended up recovering 100% and then some.... Just a thought for someone experiencing brain health illness.

I had a severe concussion this year. For a month after I stuggled to exercise, even walk, although my body wasn’t injured besides my head. I had trouble concentrating or reading. I would get very dizzy while driving so I had to stop. I read about creatine for people with traumatic brain injury and started taking it. Within 24 hours all of those symptoms disappeared. I started exercising and driving again. It was very dramatic how quickly it worked.

Creatine is the truth!!!!!! Oh my goodness,. I realized the effects of it unintentionally. I was simply taking it for strength benefits and realized my depression and anxiety/ my memory significantly improved. It was so weird! Get your vitamin D checked, it's responsible for regulating your autonomic nervous system if it's low you'll likely be sympathetic dominant which is fight or flight. You want to be parasympathetic. I have just recently started taking creatine to get to a higher training level. I'm 47 and already in good shape, I train regularly and eat healthy food daily (staying away from refined sugar and alcohol). After a week of taking 5g/day (no loading phase), I have noticed a change in my response towards certain tasks at work. I feel more focused and calm. I also have noticed a significant change/upgrade in my general humour and memory. I was only expecting muscular upgrade, so I'm glad for the extra benefits.

Pretty much what happened. For almost 5 months I was going through hell gradually. Never had depression before in my life or anxiety etc . My life was perfect but after a retina detachment operation I started developing insomnia, almost 50 days with maximum 2-3 hours of sleep a day. Lose almost 10kg in the time. Tried everything acupuncture, medication, reiki etc . Nothing worked. Stopped eating gluten. When I started taking creatine at end of May , my palpitations & tremors subsided. I thought it was what a therapist told me, right about that time- she told me to stop taking the medication & start riding my motorcycle & have faith that I don’t have depression. It was everything opposite what everyone else told me. So I was told I was ok , maybe psychologically it helped & creatine replaced the medication & 2 weeks after that I went through a spiritual retreat to detox in Vellore / Chennai India . There it was confirmed that I didn’t have depression. Whilst trained doctors claimed I had depression, PTSD etc. it was weird but it been more than a year, I only had a very slight symptom for a day. But I kept telling myself Fuck off & went on with my life. I still sometimes shit in my pants thinking of how I should deal with this if it comes back again but I challenge it daily. Exercising & socialising & drinking with my friends & just not worrying a bit . I NEVER WANT TO EVER GO THROUGH THIS HELL AGAIN.

My autistic daughter has had only a single meltdown in a year and a half since we started giving her creatine. The one meltdown she had was after two days of being lax with supplementation. Before supplementation she was having two or three meltdowns a day... However, when you mentioned that it's a slow process for creatine supplementation to effect cognition, and that it can't be used as a "nootropic," that is definitely NOT our experience. When we started supplementation it only took a minute or two for the creatine to effect her behavior. We could also tell when she had a hard day at school and gave her "extra" in the evening to replenish her supplies. When we know she is going to have an extra stressful day (when she will be forced to socialize with a large number of people, for example) we give her extra beforehand and have absolutely seen cognitive improvements with supplementation vs without on an acute basis.

Correlation/Causation ... you gotta separate out three things: 1) meds, 2) Creatine, 3) exercise ... if the reason someone starts using Creatine is because they are beginning a weight training/body building regimen, then that itself could be the reason for the decrease in anxiety, not the Creatine. That being said, I would not be surprised if Creatine helped. I'm a big believer in ARGININE myself.

Fatigue, dizziness etc. Allows me to be more physically and mentally active, allows me to reduce the likelihood of crashes and if they do occur - their severity. I take 3.4g per day. So glycine is required for the 3 step process to produce creatine. Glyphosate is a glycine molecule and as such it substitutes for the real amino acid glycine and makes the subseqent protien ineffective . See Stephanie Senef's extensive work on glyphosate . Thus a non organic plant based diet especially, would significanyly compromise creatine proxuction.

Here are the key takeaways from the discussion with Dr. Darren Candow on the potential effects of creatine on mood disorders and brain health: 1. **Emerging Research on Mood Disorders**: - Creatine supplementation is being explored for its potential to alleviate symptoms of depression, anxiety, and PTSD. - These mood disorders may reduce brain creatine stores, which are crucial for brain bioenergetics. 2. **Mechanism of Action**: - Creatine helps reduce oxidative stress and improves mitochondrial health in the brain. - This process could translate into better cognitive function and mood stabilization. 3. **Current Evidence and Studies**: - Most studies have involved participants who are also on medication for mood disorders. - There is promising evidence from rodent models, but human studies are still emerging. 4. **Dietary Impact**: - While vegans and vegetarians have lower muscle creatine levels, their brain creatine levels remain similar to those of omnivores. - The brain can produce its own creatine, independently of dietary intake. 5. **Dosage Recommendations**: - Higher doses of creatine (around 10 grams daily) over extended periods (weeks to months) are recommended to see significant benefits in brain health. - Lower doses might benefit muscle creatine levels but are less likely to impact brain creatine stores significantly. 6. **Anti-Inflammatory Effects**: - Creatine may reduce neuroinflammation and oxidative stress, linking muscle, bone, and brain health. 7. **Sleep Deprivation and Cognitive Performance**: - Creatine seems to benefit cognitive performance more than physical performance under sleep-deprived conditions. - It helps mitigate the cognitive decline associated with sleep deprivation. 8. **Creatine Synthesis in the Body**: - The body produces creatine through a process involving the amino acids arginine, glycine, and methionine. - This synthesis occurs in the brain similarly to how it happens in the liver and kidneys. 9. **Use as a Nootropic**: - Creatine is not effective as an acute nootropic for immediate cognitive boosts. - It should be taken consistently over time for cumulative benefits. 10. **Overall Health Benefits**: - Creatine is not just an ergogenic aid for physical performance but also offers recovery and overall health benefits. - Its benefits extend across various age groups, from children to older adults. 11. **Practical Application**: - For those considering creatine supplementation, a whole-body perspective is recommended, with patience for long-term results in brain health.

Thank you for this great interview! N of 1 example here, but I began taking Creatine for training benefits a few years ago. I noticed it had a subtle mitigating effect on my depressive symptoms, especially when I had poor sleep due to insomnia or graduate school. Similar to the mood-buffering effects when I’m on my standard ketogenic diet. I also noticed that the loading 10 mg dose seemed to occasionally trigger very minor gout flareups - still researching what that mechanism is. So I’ve tried to keep myself around 2.5 mg Creatine (half scoop) most days, sometimes 5 mg when I train hard, and that seems to be sweet spot for me.

I have a modest college education in veterinary science, and I am very passionate about horse health and nutrition, but this subject has opened some questions as I help my adult daughter who has some health issues that I have been considering using creatine for. Here is my question. If creatine is formed from argenine, glycine, and methionine, then humans would definitely have to make sure they have enough lysine, threonine and leucine, before an over the counter product called creatine would be as effective as it could be? The reason being, that lysine is the first limiting amino acid in the human. Then threonine and leucine. If an individual doesn’t have enough of the more limiting amino acids, then utilization of creatine would not be as helpful. If the limiting amino acids are being taken in, and the argenine, glycine and methionine are being added, the body can make its own creatine. I wonder which would be most beneficial, and less expensive; taking all the proper aminos in the proper proportions, or taking just the creatine supplement?

Have there been any studies on creatine causing anger and anxiousness in people? I’ve seen some threads of anecdotes that it can make people very angry. I only heard of it when one of my friends, who is older and on a couple pysch meds, and a med that keeps his urges for opioids lower. I did not believe him at first when he told me. But he got very defensive when he opened up about it and said that he use to be able to take it and feel great when he was younger (many years ago). But after trying it this time it gave him very dark thoughts, little things made him very angry, and as soon as he stopped taking it (after 3 days) the anger went away. I’m sure it has to do with combining it with certain meds and his current state of mind. So I just wanted to see if anyone else had heard of this or seen it in studies??

I used to get shivers down my spine. Went to the spine doc and got some exercises but also went keto around the same time. I think that contributed greatly to me rapidly getting rid of the spasms to a great extent. Also, my skin improved I feel like but looking around online, that's not a universal experience about skin and keto.

I hate to brake it to everyone but the most likely reason for creatine improving depression anxiety and other mood disorders is probably that the people who started taking it ALSO started working out and or becoming more healthy and eating better and sleeping better.

There is no medication or supplement that works better to relieve depression and anxiety than vigorous exercise. A healthy mix of aerobic ( cycling in my case) and resistance works great for me.

Although I agree that exercise is the best habit someone can implement to imporve mood and energy. I hate to brake it to you that to give reliable conclusions from a scientific study, the participants are not allowed to change more then 1 element in their life. Else the researchers can't definitively know if the conclusions where the results of that 1 element or any of the other the participants changed.

@@philodox7599it has been shown to significantly improve the cognition of elderly people who definitely were not doing rigourous exercise. 20g a day for 7 days improved their memory and other cognitive factors significantly versus placebo. Some people who have mental health issues may be suffering from depleted creative stores and for these people it would help with or without exercise but in healthy people who have sufficient creatine it will have little cognitive effect.

I tolerate only 500mg creatine /day. It effects extreamly negativly on sleep. I sleep only 4-5 h/night if I take any creatine early in the morning like 5.30am. I love the effect on it during the day, it really uplifts the mood and gives muscle strength but sleep becomes so poor. I have a long histrory of chronic stress, burn outs and some years on plant based diet. I wish I could increase the intake of creatine but I just don't fall a sleep in the evening. I take tryptophan and GABA to fall a sleep if I take any creatine in the morning. Does the body get use to it sometime? Been taking it for about 4-6 months now. I eat approx. 300g red meat/day. I can't do white meat more than 1-2 days in row.

@@LilithCain You're welcome ! I've also taken vitamin Bs and that can also effect sleep nagtivly. I didn't take them yesterday and I slept better last night so I'm observing what's happening. I really would like to take higher doses of creatine but I need to exclude the vit B first to see what works and how. Sugar is also very bad for sleep. Can tolerate a very small amount of coffee. Very sensitive to all stimulants.Creatine feels so good for the brain, focus, uplifting, energy, I accomplish so much more effortlessly everything but 10g/day sounds unbelievably high dose. I took about 1g today so lets see how the night goes.

@artelina I don't eat any sugar at all, but I find that Bs dramatically help my sleep. It shuts down all the brain chatter . I take 3 GRAMS of niacin for my anxiety daily as well as a dropper full of B1 and D3 right at bedtime . If I wake up for any reason, I repeat the drops and go right back to sleep. 😊

Sonic Wave Whole Body Vibration and stacking with music and/or frequencies is very effective in modulating the nervous system. Combine the aural/tactile aspects is very powerful in creating neuroplasticity, not just a temporary fix. Music engages the entire brain simultaneously. Will now incorporate creatine to this to consciously notice any effect?
