I loved sports as a kid but I wasn't very good at them. Got my first road bike at age 12 and all of a sudden my scrawny body and long thick thighs became a noticeable advantage! Hello GCN! This is Marcus from Southern California (8 year viewer) with a contest idea. As much we all love your trips to exotic and beautiful cycling destinations (Italy, France, Mallorca, etc), most of us don't live in such amazing locations. BUT, I'm sure many of us are proud of where we live and the relatively great places to ride! For example, I live in a boring town called Banning, CA (NOT a prime destination for cycling tourism I can assure you), but we are surrounded with beautiful 10,000 to 11,000 foot snow covered peaks, low traffic roads, incredible mountain biking trails that are minutes away, Big Bear Lake is only 1 1/2 hours drive, and challenging climbs within 1-2 miles of my house. So, my idea is that you start a contest where viewers write in and pitch their home towns for 1 or 2 GCN presenters to come and visit! If you do come, I vote Si. Thoughts?

My wife and I met in 2010 at a club ride. I ordinarily would never have been there. I lived some thirty miles or so away. I had no car at the time (bicycle and motorcycle only), and there was plenty of great riding in my own area. But a friend kept trying to get me to go to that particular ride, and one day finally showed up to drive me and my bike out there. There was this really attractive woman in the club who immediately won my attention not only with her beautiful eyes and incredible physique, but also her fabulous sense of humor, and unusual sense of cycling fashion…which I guess sort of fell back into the humor category. A week later, she brought her bikes into the shop I was managing, for new tires….at closing time on a Sunday. We began dating almost immediately afterwards, and married two years later. We’ve taken a lot of great cycling road trips, ridden many charity events, and watched a lot of races both over the internet and in person, together. We still ride bikes together every chance we get, and we still watch The GCN Show together every week.

Butyl tubes give the best ride quality out of all those options IMO. I like TPU better myself, but I miss how butyl hit potholes. They should come out with a thicker TPU tube that dampens road hits a little better. Up the 45g cyclocross tube to 55g or something, I'd buy it.

It’s been quite a journey but my husband has been an avid cyclist for many years. It just wasn’t for me. I have my own chapter in Ollie’s Big Book of Cycling Excuses with pain being the biggest one. I’d end any ride with a massive headache. Then we found GCN. Watching with him was how I could share an activity that he loved with him. After a couple of years you all made me want to explore the world by bike. After watching Hank’s works record attempt I decided that I was not trying the hard thing so I couldn’t fail and the husband was in the middle of cancer treatments, so I decided to give it another go. I thought that if my time with him were to get cut short, I’d rather be doing the thing he loved and wanted to share with me and not regret faffing about. I got a bike (4x smaller than his), no headaches. I still need a bike fit to fix some numbness issues (scheduled 4/7) and I’m deep into training on Zwift so I can ride a couple of his favorite rides in my favorite places. The future looks bright, both for the couples rides and the health outlook

The study about oxytocin really struck a chord with me. And it kind of answers a few questions I had about things that I thought I was just weird about ;) Firstly, I'm far from a very social person but I do enjoy the competition and excitement of a group ride with others who ride at my speed or push me to ride faster. The thing that has always surprised me about myself is that after a ride I very thoroughly enjoy standing around and chatting with the other riders - it can be small talk, or it can be biking-related (usually), or it might be related to other sports we are doing, or anything really. As kind of an anti-social introvert, I really enjoy the camaraderie and chatting after a ride. Which really surprises myself. It kind of makes sense now, after listening to this episode about the oxytocin study. The other thing is, well, hopefully it's not "TMI" and without being NSFW - the oxytocin study sure explains it also. My wife and I ride together often on weekends when the weather is nice. And usually after a ride we are both thoroughly soaked in sweat, kinda smelly from the effort, maybe a bit tired and worn out. Despite that - many times after a ride with my wife I find myself inexplicably uhm - amorous. Very much so. My wife thinks I am very weird because of this (okay, maybe she thinks I'm weird in general, but especially with this). But again, the "Love Hormone" boost from cycling sure makes a lot of sense in this context and explains my attitude after a ride. As always, really appreciate the GCN shows and you guys.

I watched a program on daytime tv where they measured peoples heart rate when they looked a certain colour schemes and changes into their homes. Oxytocin and dopamine are released when you make postive changes to your house and this was measured by the experiment. That got me thinking I wonder if buying a new bike intially, due to the same chemicals being released into the blood stream, would improve someones performance. So is it that Olly's new found form could be corrulated to all the new bikes he gets to ride? Would be a very interesting video to watch on how much a bike that someone asphetically likes, improves how they perform on it even if it does not have any extra tech to support the improvement.
@jamestoday223910 ай бұрын
Oxytocin.....cycling has always been about escapism and getting naturally high through exercise for me as a way of coping with life, so I've definitely noticed that long slow rides don't give me what I'm after in that regard compared with a short and vigorous workout type ride. Something that really becomes apparent when trying to adopt recommendations like the zone 2 riding mentioned on other videos. So, riding for mental well being like I do maybe doesn't fit in with the type of riding that people 'without issues' would be recommended?

It might be true that "love hormone" and all the other things might sprawl when doing exercise.... for some. Im in the category of people that struggles with "severe" mental health issues, and altho i like going out on my gravel bike, my MTB or just taking a walk in the forest, as is often the "band aid" cure regarding sport and mental health issues, the process of just "getting there" and having to be social etc., is often more of a deterrence than a motivation. Yes, we are all different and not all with mental health problems face the same issues or degrees of the same issue. But i just wish that the "go out and get some fresh air" attitude could be changed, cause that line more often than not, does the opposite than what it might be ment as.

Si's Scottish accent isn't the worst I've heard. I hear much much worse when my Canadian in-laws come over to visit.

This video has mic or room noise. Put them in a relatively soundproof box like an ice chest and see if you still get noise. Remove the laptops and see if the noise goes away. Then check the cable routing and maybe use a different mic preamp/adc? For visuals, perhaps move them forward (towards the camera) of your desk and lower them or raise them so they don't show up on camera?

i would be surprised, if you get a decent signal out of an sm7b, that is positioned that far from the source. i guess you have to crank up the preamp to the max for hearing the voices. but that amplifies the backgrund noise too.
@johnbeckmeyer169610 ай бұрын
@@easy2prononce I think you are right. 😞. There's also some low-level bleed through (or purposefully placed) music in the background - I can hear it during the discussion of oxytocin/vampires/jugular vein. Maybe the noise it coming in from the mix and not the mics or room?

New mics are an improvement, but could be improved further, there’s still a background hiss, which is particularly noticeable when listening on closed back headphones.
