The role can be interpreted in many ways. It also just so happens that Elphaba's experience matches the experience of black women in predominantly white spaces. We are often immediately antagonized because of our skin colour and made out to be the villain just like Elphaba. It made a lot of sense for the interviewer to coax Cynthia into speaking on how the role resonates with her as a black woman.
