Personally, I see these “idiot” characters are more simple, innocent, and sweet, which is why they’re endearing to me. I don’t think of Garth as an “idiot” at all.

I don’t think anyone who actually understood Wayne’s World thinks Garth is an idiot. He’s undeniably awkward, shy and eccentric, but he is fairly intelligent, possibly even a genius considering the gadgets he tinkers with and his fantastic skill as a drummer.

I don't think the audience loves Garth because they feel smarter than Garth, in the way that Bill is insinuating. People love Garth because he's genuine and looks out for people. Sure he's awkward, but that's what makes him sincere. And I don't think anyone ever thought of Garth as an idiot. Just a chill dude that's down to go on adventures with you.
