Yes . If straight up , the bullet reaches 0mph then has to accelerate back down due to gravity but won’t travel nearly as fast as it did leaving the barrel, max at its terminal velocity. Now if at any angle it will still carry it’s horizontal speed plus gravity.

@@trae3290 its the tumble effect thats important.. a bullet traveling at terminal velocity will tumble, therefore making it non leathal. a bullet fired from a gun will be rifled and spin, and therefor it decelerates slower. solong as its traveling faster than terminal velocity it will remain lethal but as soon as it decelerates enough to start tumlbing, regardless of the angle, it becomes none lethal. :)

While there he would save all his psych meds and hide them under his tongue so he could take them all at once. The dude was hysterical they would have to force him to go to bed and because of that give him even more sleep meds, He'd say I'm fightin' it, I'm fightin' it "the effects of the sleep pills" all while talking about the illuminati. @michaelzorrot5

That would be with a +p round. If the object was 224gr with a ballistic good coefficient of .156 at 1300fps it would go about 2,000 yards. In perfect conditions I could see 2300m but that would have to be with a long barrel and the hottest highest ballistic coefficient 9mm.

I agree with all of you I was assuming the google search would have been referencing a standard 4-5in barrel handgun with standard ball rounds. I didn’t really look into it more and I didn’t feel like doing the physics to calculate everything lmao. Weight and shape would probably matter the most though because as long as it reaches terminal velocity it wouldn’t matter how much higher the bullet goes. What matters is how fast gravity can make the bullet fall before wind resistance overcomes its acceleration.

Ther is a formula to calculate the ballistic range of a projectile that ignores air resistance. If using a speed of about 350 m/s and an angle of 45°, the maximum range would be ~12.5 km or 7,7ml; of course, the actual range would be significantly lower, but it would depend on the aerodynamics of the projectile.

When he shot he lost controll and shot above the target and bullet flew 4-5 km and headshot a guy on the highway who had his window rolled down. Objects will fall to the same altitude at the same velocity they were launched. The velocity along either side of the apex is the same at every mirrored point, barring wind resistance or other factors.
@rouge5140
@rouge5140 3 жыл бұрын
That "barring wind resistance" is the most important part of this statement. Terminal velocity is when air resistance is higher than gravitational pull, guns shoot faster than that so if they slow down below that speed before the apex, which they usually do, they're limited to terminal velocity which is relatively low.

Actually 45 degree would be right on the moon. Because we have atmosphere it is far more efficient to shoot from 30 to 40 degrees depending on the balistic coefficient. Bullets that handle air resistance better, like 6.5 creed or .338 can be fired closer to 45 and bullets like the 7. 62x39 or 9x19 have to be fired flater as they loose thier energy way quicker.

If you absolutly must shoot a gun in the air a shotgun with bird shot will probably be harmless. Also judging from the injuries it seems like it hit her from a very steep angle which would mean it prob was within a few blocks although a bullet shot up wards can def go much further. Mythbusters did a good episode on shooting bullets up in the air.

If you shoot the gun perfectly straight up the bullet will lose its ballistic trajectory and fall back on its side while tumbling, which will limit its terminal velocity to less than lethal speeds. The true danger is firing at less than 90 degrees which could allow the bullet to maintain its ballistic trajectory and allow it to fall back to earth at potentially faster than the bullets tip down terminal velocity. In this situation the bullet will maintain enough velocity to kill someone if they were hit in the head. There are confirmed cases of bullets being fired in the air, maintaining their ballistic trajectory, falling back to earth, and then killing someone. Long story short, if you want to see someone shoot straight in the air, watch the mythbusters episode, don't take the chance that you kill someone a couple miles down the road because you wanted to shoot your gun in the air.

I googled it. A 9mm-caliber Luger Parabellum round fired from a handgun travels at about 370m/s. To optimize its range, it would be fired at an angle of 45° and should cover about 2,300 meters. Or about 1.5 miles. What I am unclear on is it says. "before falling" Does that mean at 2300 meters it's at its maximum height? ie. its apoapsis. And falls another portion of that 2300 meters before it hits the dirt? Or if they mean it hits the dirt at 2300 meters? Maybe someone else could clarify. Heart Me please Senpai!

@@chacedelaney7282 To be fair. I'd be hard-pressed to just know the numbers off the top of my head after going to prison and losing my ability to vote or shoot. LOL Also, a bullet fired straight up is more unlikely to hit you than fuck you up if it does. That doesn't mean it won't fuck something up. Be safe out there.

@@Bauks This. I don't know how someone like Kyle with tons of experience around ballistics would agree to toss a 9mm hunk of metal 100mph at a person. It's going to fucking hurt.

You should absolutely go to jail for a long time if you fire your gun into the air, you only fire your gun at targets you intend to hit. An exception might be if your shooting clays using birdshot, then it's okay but only because you're shooting at a target and not indiscriminately into the air where your ammunition could hit innocent bystanders.

With a +p 124gr 9mm traveling at 1,250fps with a ballistic coefficient of .156 it would go about 1.25-1.5 miles at a 45 degree angle in perfect conditions. It’s not going 5 miles. Lol

I thought the Mythbusters proved that a bullet dropped from a good hight & hitting terminal velocity can & will do damage to a human & if hit in the head would kill the person. I’m sure they did this test with a dead pig & also ballistic gel

@@SparkyMTB No, I did not mean this myth, there was another one where they actually tested if Bullets shot in the air could kill someone, at the end there was no debate that it would be still deadly because it is literally impossible to shoot straight up and even if you did it could it severely hurt someone. I'm sure though what caliber they were testing.

Guys midbusters did this Yeah like Kyle said straight off is your safest bet but even straight up and you know mythbusters did it out in the desert shoot and straight up it really doesn't have enough power to kill you but but like Kyle said depending on what kind of bullet it is and the weight of it even straight up it's not gonna land right down on your property it might land 3 houses down because wind can take it and other factors as well and could tumble as it comes down But yes straight up

What Kyle is referring to is the acceleration due to the earth's gravity, which is 10m/s^2 (9.8 if you want to be specific). The formula you can use is F=MA. So if the bullet was 14.06g, then it will have roughly 1.406N of force when dropped from a building. (F = 0.01406kg * 10m/s^2). That's not taking account distanced dropped, or air resistance, but you can get the picture.
