The scene where Ellie reads the diary is almost verbatim the same in the game. I wish one line from the game made it in. When Ellie mentions Sarah, Joel responds with his hand ✋️ and says "Eliie, you are treading on some mighty thin ice" and I loved that line. That said, wouldn't change a thing about how they did it in the show

I think the podcast explains why they chose to change the line. Since this Joel isn’t quite southern, it didn’t make sense for him to say mighty thin ice. Specifically the word mighty. Made more sense for him to say “not another word.” I do agree with this.

@@cynthiavalencia724 Maybe, but 'thin ice' isn't a strictly Southern phrase. That is pretty common here in the upper Midwest

Imo the show is actually better, coz to me the phrase "mighty thin ice" has kinda comedic connotations, and I just think his short "No." is amazing for showcasing his PTSD and anger in this case.

Fun fact about the shoes being held together by duct tape: I'm replaying the game now and I actually noticed in the chapter Tommy's Dam, Joel's boots are *also* held together by duct tape in a cutscene! They took that also from the game and that's even more amazing attention to detail 😮

Glad to see this reupload! You're honestly my fav reactor to this show. If the last episode was Bella's Emmy episode, this is Pedro's. His interpretation/characterization of Joel in comparison to the game is much more vulnerable and sensitive. A great change. Also noteworthy that they're introducing small elements from the second game as easter eggs that will come back later... No spoilers though🤫🤫

This is the most vulnerable we’ve seen from both Joel and Ellie yet. We know watching from Joel the desperation to close himself off to preserve whatever humanity he doesn’t want to lose yet and him breaking down in front of Tommy is indicative of how much he’s barely keeping it together, how this dam he built up for himself is breaking apart the more he gets closer to his new surrogate daughter. Ellie, on the other hand, is a whole different kettle of fish. This is where her abandonment issues begin to boil over the more she loses her innocence; between being orphaned by her parents, being pawned off by Marlene, losing Riley, Tess, Henry and Sam, now she has to watch her father figure pawn her off and abandon her too? This girl can’t catch a damn break; it breaks my heart when she repeatedly tells him “Don’t leave me alone”.

SO MANY EASTER EGGS! I just love the way Joel calls out to Tommy when he sees Tommy up on the scaffolding. You can hear the love for his brother and the sheer relief in finding him, it's such a great moment. And yeah, you gotta love Graham Greene and Elaine Miles. From what I've seen on Twitter they capture the spirit of elder First Nations people so well, just the chill and the matter-of-factness. They were the breath of fresh air we needed at this point. Also, as I commented on the last upload of this, I LOVE the inclusion of the little chime straight from the game that indicates there's something you NEED to take note of. EVERYONE involved in this whole series needs all the recognition for the work they put into adapting such an amazing game into such an amazing show.

So for the start and the end of this episode. They basically recreated the feel of both moments in the game. Right after Henry self shoots, cut to black and the title card says "Fall" because we met Henry and Sam in summer in the game. After the University when Joel collapses off the horse, cut to black and the next thing we see is "Winter"... welcome to the symbolic winter

It's funny that you spotted the film crew at 6:14 I didn't notice it until you pointed it out, I don't usually really pay attention to those smaller details. HBO actually just updated the episode and fixed that, pretty cool how they do that, they did something similar with a Game of Thrones error before too. And man, this episode was amazing. Joel breaking down and fully letting everything out with his brother because he's pretty much the only person Joel feels safe with is so sad. He tries so hard to not get attached to Ellie, but just can't help it. Even with how different she is from Sarah, just being that daughter figure in his life just reminds him more of his daughter. And then after they reunite again, Joel just completely opens up and it's like a full on father-daughter relationship. It's so good. Thanks for the video :)

14:32 The movie they’re watching is called The Goodbye Girl which came out in 1977. It’s about an unemployed dancer and her young daughter who are forced to live with a struggling actor (played by Richard Dreyfus who won an Oscar for his performance) who’s subletting their apartment. Without spoiling the movie for anyone who hasn’t seen it, Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann show that scene from the movie to create a parallel between Ellie, her relationship with Joel, and the themes of abandonment and parental relationships that are conveyed throughout the film.

In the game Joel isn't half-deaf or have any anxiety attacks. Since you're playing as Joel he is unstoppable killing machine - he does get wounded and require healing but that is normal game mechanics. He still tries to get Tommy to take Ellie off his hands and deliver her to the Fireflies, but it is portrayed more like he knows he's starting to care about her and doesn't want that, and that he's afraid that he might fail her, but he doesn't have crippling anxiety. He does say "Tommy knows this area better than me" and "I trust him more than I trust myself", but it comes off as him just trying to get Ellie to accept going with Tommy instead of him. In the end Joel just changes his mind on his way back to Tommy's camp (in the game Ellie runs away when she realizes Joel is trying to pass her off to Tommy, and there is a lot of fighting bandits involved) and leaves with Ellie.

Re-upload! NOOOOOOO! Darn it, all those comments on the last one LOST! :( Well I'll reconstruct a bit of my comment from before, hopefully it'll stick this time: --- Another great reaction! Your expression when it cut to black at the end and "RUDE!" Just had me in stitches, that was so funny. The acting in this one is off the charts. The scene between Tommy and Joel when he finally opens up is way more powerful in the show cause Pedro is a BOSS. The confrontation between Joel and Ellie about loss and abandonment is very nearly line for line and shot for shot from the game, and they nailed it perfectly. That final scene is a bit of a kick in the teeth, isn't it? Consider yourself lucky in a way, cause the show did this moment fast. In the game it's 10 times as tortuous. Joel isn't stabbed with a broken baseball bat, when fighting with a guy they both fall from a 2nd story balcony and Joel is impaled through the back by a bit of exposed rebar (exact same spot though for the injury). They're DEEP in the University building when this happens. Ellie has to haul Joel off the bar shoved through his guts, and there's a multi-minute sequence where you're playing AS Joel as he's bleeding out, you try to walk and you barely can, pushing the stick and trying to go forward but everything is slow, Joel wobbles, his vision is going in and out as people are attacking you, just vague shapes and gunshots. You dimly hear Ellie yelling as she's fighting off guys trying to kill you both. She in fact kills probably 3 or 4 guys just getting you out of the building as you try to control a character who is barely able to respond to your inputs and your screen is going out of focus. All the while this high pitched keening sound ramps up in the background as all the important sounds you need to hear to stay alive become muffled and distant. When you finally get to the horse and get away, then Joel passes out from blood loss and falls from the horse, Ellie is even more panicked. "Joel get up! You gotta tell me what to do!" and because you're playing as Joel in that moment her voice sounds further and further away, then it cuts to black. That "three months later" we get at the beginning of the episode? In the game it happens AFTER Joel is hurt. It just cuts, you were in fall, then suddenly you cut to black, it's now winter, and when the game returns... You... are now... playing... as... ELLIE. Since you don't know what's coming I'll leave it there. See you next week! GYEEEE!!! :D

Interesting analysis! I disagree with your characterisation of Tommy. To me, it kinda seemed the opposite. As in, the real Tommy was nothing like how Joel described him to be. He seemed much more well-adjusted, more self-aware, and truly repentant for his past actions. He didn't try to make excuses like "we did what we had to" like Joel. Instead, he pointed out "there were other ways". Tommy seems much more responsible than Joel, even if Joel doesn't think so.

Joel in the game is never vulnerable like this. That works for a game where you essentially are the main character. You're not going through PTSD because you know it's not real. For a show though, I think it's more realistic to show the emotional and physical impact of living in this world and having to do morally compromising things to survive. If "show Joel" was the same as "game Joel," it would be way less interesting and frankly unrealistic.

Man if you think this is stressful and traumatic you should see season 2 and 3. The first game is a warm up.
