Over 16 games that would be a pace of 2,093 yards (almost an all time record) Henry with Mariota:416 yd in 6 games which is 69.3 YPG. Over 16 games a pace of 1,109 yds. His production is almost double without mariota and some credit goes to the OL improvement of course, but the threat of Tannehill throwing has been opening up holes for Henry as well. PFF rated Tannehill the best QB this yr in reg season and even if that’s a little outrageous, he was definitely one of the top Qb this season

My dad was a coach at Hillgrove highschool in Ga., and talked to former Alabama RB and current Miami RB Kenyan Drake on a decent basis. He was talking to Kenyan over the phone once and Kenyan was talking about the first practice Henry was at. Henry was supposed to fake receiving the ball off a playaction, and to go and block the middle linebacker. Henry just ran at the MLB and stood there. Kenyan then said Nick Saban started screaming at Derrick about why he wasn't blocking, and Henry says, "I don't know how to block coach. I've never done it before." The O-line coach then made a sarcastic comment about that not being possible, and Henry said, "They just handed the ball to me or threw it to me every play. I've never needed to block." My dad didn't believe Kenyan at first, and Kenyan was swearing up and down that that was real.

In addition, during the beginning of his career at Alabama, Henry was a terrible runner for most of the game, as he took forever to finally get started running all out. My dad called him twinkle toes because of how often he got tackled behind the line because he spent more time looking for holes than hitting them.

It's really cool to hear that. I had no clue it took him so long to adjust, just seemed like it was a combo of his injury and the backs ahead of him. I definitely believe he had no reason to block in high school, he was too busy picking up 30 yards on every single play lmao. He certainly figured out how to hit the hole later in his career at Bama, but you could see a little bit of that hesitation habit in the NFL as well. Thanks for commenting!

Kind of amazing how a man who's beat everyone down easily his whole career finds his first major struggles at the NFL level, then still has the humility/self-awareness to reach out and fix his problems pretty quickly. Or maybe it wasn't the first time, and behind the scenes he was always taking such a mental approach to improve.
