My daughter was diagnosed 3 days after her 5th birthday. I knew she had been sick. I kept making dr appointments for her all that summer leading up to that moment. They tested her urine and we went home. When we got home, got the call. She fasted that morning befote her appointment and her sugar was 900. I had no idea what that meant. Knowing now, im in complete awe how GOD sustained my baby.

No wonder she was always researching for what may be wrong...she ~felt~ like something was wrong. She knew! I am soooo glad for you that they found it and are now managing it. Isn't it a relieving yet odd feeling to be happy to finally get a diagnosis? A real one! Question...do you get dizzy when you stand up too quick? If so, look into POTS/dysautonomia. This could be a part of your diabetes and/or the reason for it. A red flag, if you will. This is changing my life to know that I haven't been making any of this up. Be soooo thankful that you didn't have to go down the gaslighting doctor's road. It's a rough one! But God! He has made the way, whether quick or slowly. I've learned so much through it and am even writing a book about how to take care of yourself through it. Thanks for all your inspiration and humor!! ❤

Devin, I had 5 miscarriages before I had my 3rd child. When I found out I was pregnant with him, I was 28. He was my miracle. I was going to have a hysterectomy because I had some other health issues that were causing me serious issues. So, after the pre-surgery bloodwork, the doctor called and said I couldn't have the surgery because I was pregnant. So, because I was high-risk, they did my glucose test at 9 weeks gestation. My fasting sugar was 281. They think that's why I lost so many babies. They didn't do the tests for them early enough to not lose them. These babies are miracles. Thank you for sharing this 🙏.

You should avoid hysterectomys unless pathology has presented. The risk of developing Cancer is more real after a hysterectomy. Woman do in fact need their hormones to be regulated even after menopause and organs such as the uterus do this. Removal of the uterus for no good reason is not good.

I was on insulin for months but I feel so blessed to have survived and am now managing my diabetes with meds and diet. I empathize with diabetics and pray that those who don’t know the symptoms will be educated and take early diagnosis seriously. It is a life altering disease.

My son was diagnosed with Type 1 at 13 months old and was in DKA. I had actually requested that he be tested at his 12 month checkup but they talked me out of it because he didn’t have a “fruity alcohol smell” on his breath. One symptom he didn’t have compared to the many he did. He’s almost 14 now and doing great! We had one other DKA last year, which was even scarier than the first because he could express how he was feeling a lot more. I love that you’re bringing awareness to it. Many adults are being diagnosed with Type 1 later in life and it’s making such a difference now that people are getting the right diagnosis and treatments.

My son was diagnosed with Type 1 at 2 years old in May of 2022 and he was in DKA. My sister was diagnosed at 18 mo so I knew what the symptoms of high blood sugar were. He woke up in his crib one night and said “mom. Me thirsty” and it clicked. He had been fussy, couldn’t get comfortable every single night for a week straight. I was in tears googling even though I knew exactly what was going on. I remember going to work and calling my sister and said “He is either teething or he’s diabetic”. Thank God his pediatrician listened to my concerns and we did a fasting glucose. It was too high to read on their meter so we rushed him to the closest peds hospital in Mobile. Watching him in DKA, was terrifying. Also, at 39 weeks pregnant 😂 I was EMOTIONAL. But he’s happy, healthy, and your average 3 year old. Also, there’s a test we plan to do with our daughter. It’s through TrialNet. I think they have to be at least 2 years old. It’s checks them for the antibodies for T1 and will let you know how likely they are to develop T1 depending on the antibodies so you can kinda have an idea how closely to watch out.

Thank you for this video! Diabetes runs in my family. I’ve always been SKINNY and once I switched birth control methods, I got super hungry all the time and gained 25 pounds. I was told I was pre-diabetic and to lay off carbs and any other fluid other than water. My blood sugar went back down, and I’m gradually losing weight (without the gym- more through balanced meals), but I was told I’m still as risk for gestational diabetes when that times comes. Super informative video. The only symptoms I had that were weird was I always got yeast infections around the same time my period came, which was AWFUL, and a good enough reason to start making lifestyle changes. 😂😖

I've been diabetic for 22 years now. When i was diagnosed my blood sugar was 412 i think. Back then there was no medical devices like there is now so i was on cloud and clear insulin that had to be mixed.. there was no premixed insulin like today. I remember years before i was diagnosed that i would get sick a lot at school to the point where it was worrying my teachers and they probably thought i had an eating disorder but now that i look back i was probably diabetic then. What the weird thing is is that I started drinking diet drinks before I even knew i was diabetic. I guess somehow my body was getting me ready for it. I'm also the only one in my family with type 1 also. In 22 I went into DKA for the first time from being sick and my blood sugar going WAY high and it was pretty scary. I was diagnosed a little over a year ago with type 1 at 27 yrs old. For about a month prior to my diagnosis I was urinating a lot and drinking mass amounts of water. I knew something was wrong but kept telling myself it’d get better, because I had no health insurance and couldn’t afford to get checked out. About two days before I finally went into the ER I was so sick. I couldn’t keep anything down and felt like I had to constantly be drinking water. It was so miserable I had no choice but to drag myself into the ER. After sitting in the waiting room for nearly two hours and trying to stay conscious I finally was able to see a doctor and my glucose levels was at 429 (normal level is 70-140 for non diabetics). I was terrified when I heard the news and didn’t know what I was gonna do. Thankfully a year later it’s now just a normal part of my life and I’ve been able to keep it under control very easily. Nobody else in my life is diabetic so it was a pleasure to hear your story. Thank you and I wish you the best of health.

I got diagnosed when I was 18, my freshman year of college right after I moved away, lol. Had virtually all the same symptoms. I was on my college's bowling team, and we had a tournament in Cincinnati. The entire weekend, I was essentially drowning myself in drinks. It was root beer, it was slurpees, it was gatorade, it was mountain dew. Non-stop. I probably had 6 bottles of pop and 2 slurpees a day that weekend. On Sunday, we're going back to Michigan from Cincinnati. It's usually a 6.5-hour drive. I turned it into a 13 hour trip because I was downing drinks, sleeping for 10 minutes, and then immediately needing to stop to go to the bathroom. We probably stopped at 30 different gas stations. It was absurd. Monday, I went to the campus health center and after a couple minutes, the doctor there said "I'm gonna send you to the ER" and I was kinda freaking out. Went to the ER, they admitted me, and said my blood sugar was 681. With as much sugary stuff as I drank, I'm lucky it wasn't higher. In hindsight, I was probably undiagnosed for at least a month, if not more. I had lost 40 pounds between when I started school in August and was diagnosed in February. I kinda thought maybe just my going to the campus gym to play basketball was really working LOL. Turns out my body was eating its own fat for energy and giving me DKA, most likely. When I was diagnosed in that ER, I sat there for I think 4-6 hours getting IV's. They surprisingly didn't give me any insulin, that I knew of at least, at that point. But after I was there for a while and was feeling better, I immediately met with an endocrinologist and got prescribed insulin and was shown how to inject myself and whatnot. Now I've had it for a little over 17 years. I got a CGM last March after I got in a car accident due to a hypo. It's been very helpful. My a1C is generally between 5.8 and 7. Admittedly, a1C isn't a great measure of care anymore, time-in-range on your CGM is better, but it's still alright. Sometimes I'm kinda happy that I have T1 and not T2, because I'd rather just eat what I want and take insulin than get rid of all my indulgences and have to control it with diet lol.

Nutritional classes helped me just as well as insulin (almost)! I was diagnosed at 12 and now I have friends being diagnosed at ages 20-40 with Type 1/Type 2 & they ask me for help. I tell them all to take a nutrition class. If you don’t know that fried chicken has carbs you need help. All this is my opinion. Thank you!😊

I was diagnosed at age 5. It’s funny now but the thing that worried my mom was she found me on the countertop in our bathroom drinking out of the faucet. Its truly a thirst nothing can quench!

I was diagnosed about 4 years ago. I went to the er for an allergic reaction. They ran a blood test too that day. They seemed confused as to how I didn't notice my sugar was 515. I peed a lot because I drank a lot of water. I never paid enough attention. Now I know when I'm over 160 or below 75. It's weird how life changes after this diagnosis.

I'm about to hop over and watch your diabetes equipment video, but I would love if you talked more about your fasting situation now? I've been watching a lot of Dr. Mindy Pelz who talks about fasting a lot and how it works for all different kinds of folks, including diabetics. So interesting. I'm fascinated.

I was diagnosed at 2.5 years old in July 1995. (Just had my 28th Diaversary!) I was diagnosed the day of my mom's due date with my sister. She had no idea anything was wrong with me but my babysitter noticed some symptoms and urged me to get looked at. Thank God she did. I was in the Ped ICU for 4 days (Steel Magnolias was on the TV and my mom thought I was going to die....she was 40 weeks pregnant....lots of hormones!!!!) and I was released July 12th and my sister was born July 15th. Back then it was 8 finger pokes and 4 shots a day. I did that for 12 years. Got my pump at 14. Now I'm on Omnipod 5 + Dex G6 and my a1C is the best it's ever been since I was a child. Diabetes SUCKS but this T1D community is truly an amazing space!

How I found out I was diabetic was similar to you. I was soooo extremely thirsty. Like a thirst you couldn't quench. I drank like four Gatorades a day. Finally I felt sick so I went to the hospital and found out my blood sugars were above 600! Yes 600! That was 2005. After that life changed for sure cuz I was a sweets person. Now I'm a savory and meat and potato gal.

I found out 2 days before Christmas two years ago. Blurred vision, constant thirst and endless peeing. My dad was diabetic and had his meter. I checked my blood sugar and it said "HI". Get to the hospital and it turns out my sugar was 588. An hour later it was 621. Now I am insulin dependent.

My dad was a board certified pathologist. He said in medical school it is "typical" for every med student to diagnose themselves with 2 or 3 terminal illnesses. But, I think your ability to share your Type 1 diabetes story to help other patients and their families is amazing! Few people realize Type 1 is so much more serious than Type 2! Anyway, may God bless you and your entire family with health, happiness and prosperity in Jesus's name, AMEN!

I had gestational diabetes in my first pregnancy, I was pre diabetic already, I went vegan for 1 year cold turkey and I cured it. 6 years later I'm mostly vegan now and have included seafood and some dairy. Doctors unfortunately won't even give you the right diet to cure they are there to treat you for life. get educated on food and what even starts diabetes its INSANE I never went on insulin because I went vegan cold turkey I took a holistic approach and it worked. highly highly recommend. I'm now in my third pregnancy and have had no where near the results I had in my first. XO

Your story is almost identical to mine, I had gestational, had all the same symptoms as you, have lost over 50 lbs, but they say I am type 2 because I don’t have the antibody that is present for me to be diagnosed as type 1….so I’m on meds that unfortunately have made me lose even more weight.😔 and….my dad and sister are both type 1.

The good news is that future pumps will also incorporate their own CGM's and have AI/Machine Learning algorithms to learn your dietary habbits based on your glucose. This will make future management of T1D much simpler and automatic.

Type 1 here. Unusual diagnosis here. I was 42. But, I have type 1 ALL over my family. Out of 9 siblings only 2 of us don't have it. Plus my dad was, nieces and nephews with it. I caught it so so early. Was not actually having many symptoms, yet. Crazy the misinformation out there about it.

If you have T1D then you can get your daughter checked for antibodies! My little sister has T1D and I found out that I have antibodies by a blood test they had everyone in the family take so now I get checked for it every year since I know there’s an elevated chance I’ll develop it.

I have insulin resistance that rears its ugly head. I definitely had the WORST symptoms of T1 when I was a teenager. It turns out when you've got insulin resistance though because you drastically swing from highs to lows ... your A1C is often beautiful. I didn't get the diagnosis until I was mid to late 30s. My glucose has been pretty ugly lately. Thanks for sharing your story... I didn't think about it being active again until you mentioned thirst, super frequent bathroom needs, but the blurry vision has had my tail lately. My BP has been horrible all summer so I didn't even register to see about my blood sugar and insulin resistance. Calling the doctor Monday. Thanks!!

Hi!! If your pcp won’t check your sugar, I’d recommend going to any drugstore (Walgreens, cvs, Walmart etc.) and getting a cheap blood sugar monitor, test strips, a lancing device, and lancets. I would personally suggest the contour next meter kit because it has all of those things that you need for $20 (which is typically cheaper than if you would buy them separately). I know they have the kits at Walmart for sure. A blood sugar monitor is good to have anyways just to randomly check sometimes to make sure your blood sugar is all good. If it’s high (or low), I would bring the meter and show your pcp and make sure to tell them you want extra testing done. If they say no, you need a new pcp. Good luck!! I hope everything is okay and you figure out what’s wrong. If you happen to have diabetes, it is a struggle but it definitely gets a little easier to handle as time goes on and you learn more about it. :)
