How did Europeans immigrate to the Americas? | Past to Future
This video presents the European exploration and colonization of the Americas.
In 1492, while on expeditions to find new trade routes from Europe to Asia, Christopher Columbus, an Italian explorer, accidentally discovered a “New World” that possessed all the natural wealth which the Europeans sought so eagerly.
With great deposits of gold and other minerals as well as vast plains, valleys and mountains, this new land was viewed by the Europeans as an enormous wilderness area with great economic potential, and thus became the land of dreams for those who were longing for resources and wealth.
The first European country to conquer and colonize the New World was Spain. By 1512, the larger Caribbean islands were occupied by the Spanish, with the first Spanish town established on the island of Hispaniola, and Santo Domingo becoming the first capital of Spain’s New World possessions. Other areas then settled by the Spanish were Cuba, Puerto Rico, and Jamaica. Spanish conquistadors then sailed from the island harbors to explore the coasts and penetrate the continents. After all, Spain possessed the largest land area of the colonial empires in the New World, including several islands in the West Indies, all of Mexico, most of Central America; most of South America, and what are now Florida, California, and the U.S. Southwest.
England also took part in the exploration and colonization of the Americas, and their most significant establishment proved to be the 13 colonies along North America’s Atlantic coastline. Following the success of the Jamestown and Plymouth Colonies, the English gradually established colonies in the region that became known as New England. Massachusetts Bay, another settlement established in 1629, was the landing place of the Mayflower and the Pilgrims. As Massachusetts prospered and expanded, the settlers sought the new colonies in New England.
New Hampshire was another piece of New England to be formed in 1632. Connecticut and Rhode Island were formed in 1635 and 1636 respectively for people to have the opportunity to live and worship in accordance with their beliefs. Today, New England also includes Maine and Vermont. In the Middle Colonies, New York was originally colonized by the Dutch in 1626 with the name New Netherland, but then became an English colony in 1664. This colony also included the first permanent settlement in New Jersey.
Delaware, as part of the Swedish colony in New Sweden, was founded in 1638, and then became an English colony in 1664. In 1680, the Quakers settled Pennsylvania, forming the last piece of the Middle Colonies. In the Southern Colonies, the English settled Maryland to the north of Virginia in 1634 and Carolina in 1653 (later split into North Carolina and South Carolina in 1729). Georgia colony was established in 1732 as a buffer zone between the British colonies and Spanish settlements in Florida. By the 17th century, the English had taken the lead in colonizing North America with the formation of 13 colonies, which later became the 13 original states of the United States of America.
France, one of the two northern Atlantic kingdoms besides England, began sending ships to explore and colonize the Americas in the 17th century. In North America, France established a large colony called New France. Seeing the potential for fur trading, the founder of Quebec in 1608, Samuel de Champlain, attempted to explore the region and to build up the French fur trade with the help of the Huron Indians. Three years later, he established the beginning of a settlement on Huron island, which is today the site of Montreal.
In 1682, René-Robert Cavelier - the most famous of all the explorers - had his expedition descended the Mississippi River from the Illinois Territory to the Gulf of Mexico, and later claimed the entire territory for France. Many other French permanent settlements in North America were founded including Detroit, St. Louis, Baton Rouge, and New Orleans. Down to the Caribbean islands and South America, by 1664, France controlled 14 islands in the Caribbean, with the principal possessions including St-Domingue (now Haiti), Martinique, Guadeloupe, and Dominica.
On the northeast coast of South America, after numerous changes in control alternating between France, Britain, the Dutch, the Netherlands and Portugal, the colony of French Guiana was finally confirmed as French in 1817.

Wait a minute so the narrator said spices were species and then called the original New York name New Netherland instead of New Amsterdam? I'm more than halfway through this video and although those are kind of minor problems I can't get them out of my head. Was it New Amsterdam or New Netherland? I mean spicies and species I figured was just a really obvious mistake that was I just left in there uncorrected but now I'm curious what was New York's original name? Okay I looked it up and it does make sense New Netherland was the general Dutch colony but New Amsterdam was the current city of Manhattan or New York New York. This makes sense since the Netherlands is well a country and Amsterdam is City. So you have New York State and then you have New York the city. I think the confusion is from the fact that I had never heard of New Netherland. I had heard of New Amsterdam many many times and even in pop culture but it just seems like an automation to have never heard of New Netherland even in like high School Middle School or college. Actually now that I think about it Dutch colonization of what later became the United States of America was mostly glossed over. Quite literally the entire Dutch colonization of the Americas was summed up in like a couple of sentences and then basically took up a question or two on a test. So in retrospect doesn't seem that odd that such a detail would have been missing.

You also neglected to mention the British colony of Nova Scotia which was established by conquest in 1710 and ceded by France to the British in 1713. The English crown, via Scotland, had established a successful colony in Nova Scotia in the late 1620s but returned control to France in the 1630s. Also, no mention of the British colony of Newfoundland.

Good introduction on European immigration to America. You should make more videos on this topic, reporting the events in each decade (1492 to 1542, 1542 to 1592, etc.) to better inform which kingdoms participated.

You should have talked more about other empires that colonized america, like nederland, russia and particularly portugal since they together with spain were the first to colonize america. I understand that spain, france and the uk are the most famous countries to do it but you can’t forget that portugal colonized half of south america and that they and nederland were as strong empires as uk, spain and france back then. Anyway good video and you got my subscription! Keep up the good job!

It's funny that you give your input about who colonize what, but its not important to you to mention how those who were colonized feel. This is why the Bible prophesy reveals that those who have stolen land, killed, raped, all in the name of greed (Edom) it will happen to them to the point that they will beg God for forgiveness as the tribes of israel take their rightful ownership (African Americans, Hispanics, native Americans, and more. Whether you believe in the scriptures or not, it doesn't matter because the truth doesn't need your opinion. Enjoy your future.

As an European, i think we were probably wrong (France, England, Spain, Portugal, Netherlands, etc) to begin the colonization processes, Europe was always dipped in massive wars and conflicts since it's birth. When we went into those countries we just spread our ways of waging war and hatred(mentality) into the indigenous people there (not saying they did not do horrible things to each other as well before us, it's just we took it into an industrial level). Even new diseases we spread on to them which caused a lot of death from it, now with their "purity" taken, mixed with our ways and various ethnicities, we left them at a complete wreckage, i just wonder how the world would had evolved into today if our ancestors did not engage in such ways. (Like we could had just go there to trade the natural resources they and us all needed back then, instead of going into the killings and raping in the process). Just some food for thought, not to start any stupid racism here, just thinking onto an alternative timeline.

I was hoping you'd mention how the English settled their colonies vice the rest of the Europeans; with whole families settling rather than mostly men looking for fortune. This is why the English/British had 2 million settlers in the 13 colonies while France had only 25,000 or so by 1760, when they lost to the superior British numbers. Much of Latin America is partially Native Americans due to Spanish men taking Indian wives rather than an influx of Spanish women. Portugal settled Brazil more like the English did, but had many African slaves, as did the Carribean.

European dna is mostly 65-70% in Brazil, If this were true, African and European DNA would be split half and half. Another mistake, the French crown together with the king of France began large-scale colonization largely in the new France in the 1660s to 1760s, they took many women to balance the genders, see filles du roy and filles a marier

@@GabrielAlves-ce2oy From Wikipedia: The French were eager to explore North America but New France remained largely unpopulated. Due to the lack of women, intermarriages between French and Indians were frequent, giving rise to the Métis people. Relations between the French and Indians were usually peaceful. Louis XIV also tried to increase the population by sending approximately 800 young women nicknamed the "King's Daughters". However, the low density of the population in New France remained a very persistent problem. At the beginning of the French and Indian War (1754-1763), the British population in North America outnumbered the French 20 to 1.

It's called being morally lucky. You get to hold onto your slave morality world view because it's beneficial. If Mongols (or some other group), for instance, took over the world back in the day, and implemented their hegemony, doubt they'd have much, if any, guilt. Believing that past atrocities were wrong is a very white, European, humanist dynamic. I'm just here to balance the scales in the other direction, nothing personal. @@oohweeoohwee9222 simple. The Portuguese would get Spain to finance the expedition to confirm the existence of the new lands rather than the Portuguese risking their own money, then Portugal would come in afterwards and claim their share. That's exactly what happened. Portugal got their share - Brazil - with the subsequent Treaty of Tordesillas.
