I really loved the XMen: First Class film and I always loved that explanation (the bullet deflected by Erik on the beach in Cuba) the most. I love it because the idea of Erik doing it deliberately was a bit too much for me because they are ultimately friends who disagree and wouldn't likely want to kill or torture one another. I love that it manages to recognize that but still make it Erik's fault- Erik wasn't paying attention as he was blinded by his sense of purpose that one moment of reckless behavior created a divide between them that would mean they could never again be fully the friends they were when they were younger. Its also made tragic because Erik was even justified in his motive during the moment because a human was in fact trying to kill him. Moira and Erik both cared for Charles & thought they were defending him but it was the conflict between man and mutant that paralyzed him. When they both realized what happened - they were both horrified at their role in it and yet blamed the other.

It was easily Grant Morrison's worst idea in his New X-Men run. Completely ruining the promising new character of Xorn and his "reveal" created several plot holes regarding his appearances that made no sense at all.

I seem to recall from the old animated series of the 90's that when Xavier entered the Savage Land, he would lose his telepathic powers, but gain the ability to walk. The effect would reverse when he returned from the Savage Land. This suggests that his inability to walk is somehow a side effect of his immense psychic powers. How does that work into the continuity?

Jeremy Higgins It has nothing to do with 616 main Marvel continuity, but was sort of incorporated into X-Men Days of Future Past (2014 Movie I mean) where Charles could regain his legs with a drug but at the cost of his mental powers. Swap Savage Land for magic mystery drug, and viola! (But seriously, that was a thing in XTAS? Wow)

Jeremy Higgins I may be mistaken, but IIRC, in the animated series, his inability to use his legs is psychosomatic, meaning there is nothing wrong with his legs, but because he was unable to use them for such a long time before regaining the ability to walk again, he wasn't used to it anymore, and in fact, any attempt would cause him intense pain. Kind of a drawback to his mental faculties in the whole "mind over matter" thing. His brain basically overrode what he knew, just because his body had become accustomed to it.

While it is sad to think about I think Xavier being without the use of his legs helps to personify the character that he is. Xavier to me has always been the kind hearted caring teacher that you can always find around the halls of his school helping young minds while in the background being the amazing strategist and mind that helps the X-men with all of their missions. When he gets his legs back he is always seen out there fighting with the x-men and to me that just doesn't look right. It doesn't feel like professor X

Yo wait Scott!!! I just got this idea: I was watching your 50th episode Q&A and I heard how you wanted to do more episodes on early drafts of heroes. If so, there's an interesting story behind the creation of SPIDER-MAN, and how Stan Lee initially went to Jack Kirby to draw the first few pages, in which he made Spider-Man into a top high-school athlete and son of a military general, who discovers a Web-ring and Web-gun that five him Spider-like abilities. Interestingly enough, Kirby designed him as a buff Cap-clone, resembling the uber-strong idealized teenager archetype, which is a stark difference from Steve Ditko's version of the character that we've come to know and love. Anyway, just an idea, and I'd be THRILLED if you actually used this idea for a video. Thanks for the fun vids.

It's things like this that made me love the Ultimate Comics so much. I started reading the Ultimate Comics first, and it helped me get a feel for a lot of characters before trying out the main series. That being said, naturally the first thing that occurs to me is "Well, why don't they just keep cloning Xavier and have him transfer minds every time he looses his mobility?", but then I remember that this is comics

I think I prefer Professor X in the chair, myself. Now, I'm biased- I'm in a wheelchair myself, and I'm passionate about disabled heroes.But I also really like the idea of powerful mind and weak body (or vise versa). I think it's important because if he had a powerful body *and* mind, there's less room for flaws, mistakes, and harm. And those things are what make a story interesting and fun.

watching this after two seasons of Legion I see that the show seems to take inspiration from those first two times Xavie lost the use of his legs, in the show the Shadow King is often referenced as an evil ruler who has been taken down by Xavier. Given more seasons we could have a retelling of that origin.

well done, covered all the bases I can remember, but is shows the weakness in comics, that the characters have to constantly be rebooted back to an original format every so often -- instead of letting characters develop and change. honestly I think Charles being crippled despite the alien tech at his disposal and mutant powers of some of his followers and friends, just never made sense.

I recall in the '90s TV series, they seem to explain that Xavier paralysis was tied to his powers. While being in the Savage Land, Xavier and Magneto have their powers locked, resulting in him walking again.

I dont know if its important or if im even remembering this right, but I read a comic where they attacked magnetos base I think it was and it was revealed xavier had a suit he could use to walk. If im remebering correctly it used his phycic powers to fuel it and made his powers weaker.

Wasn't there an arc where Charles and Juggernaut (who were brothers if i remember right) were in the army in Africa and during juggernaut finding the gem of Cyttorak, the cave the shrine was in started to collapse. thanks to his powers Juggernaut was fine, but Charles had went to find him and got his legs crushed by the falling rock. Juggernaut left him to die (Their relationship was mostly hate based on Juggernaut's side)

Xavier getting his legs back is kind of similar to the "what if Batman killed," or "what if Superman was evil" story ideas in that writers seem to think readers find it lot more interesting than it actually is.

Like many other 90's kids I was first exposed to the X-Men via the 90's cartoon show. I remember there were a series of episodes where both Xavier and Magneto were trapped in the Savage Lands, I believe, and there was something there that was inhibiting the use of their powers. As a consequence of this, Xavier had gotten the use of his legs back. I had always believed that Xavier's handicap was a result of his mental powers being so powerful that is put a strain on his mind, particularly the part of his mind that controlled his legs. And to be honest, I like the idea of that even more than the explanations offered in this video. I imagine that Charles greatly associates his mutant powers with his personal identity, so much so that he would see the use of his legs as a fair trade for the ability to connect with people on such a deep level. That is, if his powers were the cause of his inability to walk, which they are not. Not to mention his lack of mobility being caused by his powerful telepathy would tie in very nicely to the whole "evolution" motif of the X-Men. Think about it, why would you have to run away from a foe when you can just hop into their brain and make them go away.

I do believe you missed the one that I though was the first. As a young man he was in Egypt and fought someone called ht Shadow King I think he was called. They battled on the astral plane were Shadow King destroyed Charles spine. I always thought that was were Charles lost the use of his legs. Now understand I'm doing this from memory and not research. So if I'm wrong, I'm wrong. But if I'm right,Holy shit what a memory! Considering that was back in the sixties when I read that.

I have a disability myself and I have always enjoyed Professor X. His regaining his legs periodically doesn't surprise me; after all, it's comics. I enjoyed the depth of research you put into this. Another Professor X question, where does he get his money from?????

Really, I know in ultimate comics he gets funding from the Hellfire club and I think by some plot device or another he gets all of the Hellfire club assets for himself. Thanks for the reply.

The main story I grew up with was he was shot with a gun back in the old days when Magneto and he were friends. This comes out of the Magneto (one-shot, 1993). I am an old geek so I know my books. I own this. Your video was good just to let you know.

When I was a child I read an x-men comic (I think it was "uncanny", but no idea, the print is lost) where Xavier (walking thanks to a pretty cool armour that didn't protect his head , Beast, Wolverine, and a memory-wiped Magneto (long haired, pretty cool too) fought in some planet lost in space with bio-robot-like race (actually, the skeleton was a golden mechanical thing and the rest was a black bio stuff). Do you have any idea of which comic I am talking about? I've been searching the web for a few days and still haven't found it. I'll make a reddit post, maybe. Thanks!
