Robert Plant to this day, to me, is still underrated. A lot of people just think “screamer” but aren’t listening to his wonderful tone and phrasing. He can change his texture to meet what Jimmy brings to the table. Most singers sound the same all the time. With Robert, things were different. Another instrument for sure.

What people don’t understand about Plant is how diverse he is . He’s not just a rock singer, but he’s a blues man as well, a soul singer with the heart of a rocker who is also folky . He’s one of those singers from back in the day, he’s a singer that encompasses many genres . He’s also a fantastic harmonica player, there’s no singers like that today . There’s no frontmen/women really.

Really well done analysis, thank you. Plant does a sort of melodic, expressive, soulful storytelling rather than “singing”. He still does really, with subtleties of color and soulfulness, sometimes even playfully expressing himself now. I’ve catalogued his journey and he continues to grow in his humility and reverence of his musical roots while continuing to push himself forward stylistically. I really feel those that say he doesn’t “have it anymore” or have expected him to sing the tunes the way he did upon initial recordings don’t really “get” him. The older I get, the more I feel I understand better why he’s stayed clear of full-blown Zep reunions. It’s definitely not what he’s capable of vocally, but not where he would want to be anyway.

Plant’s phrasing and dynamics in his delivery, to me, is the greatest in the history of rock. For example, I love in Ramble On how he adds such intensity to “way” in the “Autumn moon light my waaaay” that is just so Robert Plant. The guy was a genius.

What Robert plant does is , he takes you on the journey of poking along and then you hit a rock and you sort of scream. He puts that energy in there in that moment and you feel that emotion. . He does this very well . No one can really do it the way he does. Looking forward to Part 2 . ♡

Thank you for covering Led Zeppelin and also thank you for not worrying about the pitch with Plants vocals. His vocals to me have always been about raw emotion and the freedom to express it how he saw fit. Im sure he could have sung to pitch if he had wanted to, but that wasnt what they were about. All 4 of them bent what was "expected" of them in a band to such extremes that they changed what rock can sound like forever. Probably one of the best bands ever and certainly my favorite 😁

Interesting to hear Chris’s description and imitation of Robert Plant’s vocals. Hanging on to that "nasal" "twang-y" / "mixed" placement even in the lower pitches is what Sohyang, Dimash and even Michael Jackson often did (of course in different genres) to assist them to smoothly transition from low to really high pitches. Awesome part one Fil! I don't think I ever heard this song. Roberts voice is quite percussive in this song. It reminded me of jazz for some reason. He's a master of dynamics. I know from singing that you just got to let it ride. Let your voice go where it wants to. That's what Robert is doing. Chris does an awesome job at discibing how Robert is using his voice. I didn't know Chris Liepe before this. But I was impressed by his analysis, like I'm impressed with Fil. Combine the two, and this is a match made in heaven. There was a vocal coach on You Tube several years ago when I first started listening to Fil. Amazing voice. Not a nice person. Sarcastic, arrogant, completely the opposite of Fil....and Chris. This song also merits a full Jimmy Page appreciation. When people just focus on his precision soloing they miss the point. I don’t think any rock guitarist was as good at creating a vibe and mood with a full range of rhythm playing, fills, arpeggios, volume dynamics, leads, riffs in ONE SONG and then also he’s so locked in with the rest of the band, interplaying with Plant but also Bonham and JPJ, you can’t just go “hah, he missed a note, he’s not as good as Blackmore or Gary Moore” without looking at the big picture. Those guys are fantastic no doubt, but by the same token, they really can’t recreate a Zep jam like Since I’ve Been Loving You because they don’t have all the ingredients of Jimmy Page’s recipe. Jimmy Page is like a master chef in a kitchen whipping up Zep classics. Can’t just tease apart a single flavor and criticize it out of context.

"The Golden God" is the greatest of them all. The tambre of his voice is so unique, that you can't help but notice his voice. Plant was truly blessed. Hey Fil, maybe you can examine one of Plant's contemporaries in David Coverdale, the difference of his voice from his Deep Purple years, in contrast to his Whitesnake years. In the original studio version, Robert Plant comes into the song with a slightly frail halting technique that's a natural and recognizable part of his vocal range. He consciously emphasises each syllable with a short gap between each in the first few lines in a kind of plodding style as if he's tired and worn out already. This song has such fantastic light and shade, considering how he explodes later in the song. Something else I notice that's quite common with rock singers of the same era as Led Zep is that many of them use vibrato very sparingly, if at all. We've grown so used to the vibrato flourishes lately and it's curious to see the change. I do prefer a sparing use of vibrato, with a clean pure unadorned sound, as it gives rendition of a song perhaps more honesty and a little less virtuosity.....just my personal taste I guess.

Excellent as expected. I really liked the concept of vocal energy and conservative use...not only is it probably a good practice for the health of your voice...but also for the impact on the audience. Those Plant power notes hit you hard because of the contrast to the lighter sounding verses. If the whole song was in that power mode it would not have the same impact...at least I believe that.

Great White performed the best cover of this song. Go watch and listen to their live version of it from the Ritz in '88. Jack Russell is as accurate a Plant singer as anyone ever has been. It's REALLY good.

Funny story about the lyrics for Since I've Been Loving You ... Instead of keeping the "Working from 11 to 7", Page/Plant changed to "Working 7 to 11," which makes no sense. The night shift would be 11pm to 7am. Working 7pm to 11pm - big deal. Probably just to avoid royalties... 🤣 That being said, enjoyable Part I review, Fil!
