I always assumed that Peter took Lupin's wand to attack others, not to transform himself. And the sentence "Too late. Pettigrew had transformed" refers to Harry's order "Stay where you are!". So Peter took Lupin's wand, Harry disarmed him, Peter saw that the only thing he can do is escape, so he changed to rat form and escaped.

Yep. You never need a wand to transform into, or back from, your animagus form. So many of the animal forms don't have apposable thumbs to allow them to pick up a wand, and in some cases, not even the strength to do so, e.g., Rita Skeeter.

I always thought, that Peter needed a wand to transform back into a rat because he had to remove the spell remus and Sirius performed to force him into human form. If there wasn't some magic that kept him in human form, he could have escaped the whole time.

Sirius choosing not to return to his house also highlights just how deeply Dumbledore screws up specifically in Order of the Phoenix. He leaves Harry alone in the place he hates most and confines Sirius to the same situation

I have couple of things to comment upon. 3:47 How I interpret the process of buying the Firebolt went down is as follows: Crookshanks takes the order to the Owl Office (most likely in Hogsmeade), meaning the Post Office of the wizarding world. Owl Office send the order to Quality Quidditch supplies in Diagon Alley. They take the order, and send someone to collect the gold from Gringotts, from the vault which is mentioned in the order. The goblins in Gringotts only get to know the vault, which they need to use, and take the gold fron there, paying for Sirius' order. The guy from the Quality Quidditch supplies isn't required to know from whose vault the gold came from, as far as they get the payment. The goblins on the other hand may know that the vault they are using belongs to Sirius, but don't see as information that definitely needs to be told to anyone. Oh, and the part about Crookshanks delivering the order to the Owl Office has been in the book at least as long as I can remember, and I have been reading the Finnish translation of the books for roughly 14 years now. 8:32 The three dots you have placed there to symbolize that there is something left out from between Pettigrew diving for Lupin's wand and Harry's "Expelliarmus" are rather crucial for this situation. As soon as Lupin starts transforming into werewolf, Sirius transforms into a dog to be able to fight Lupin, which keeps one of the potential hunters for a rat-Peter busy. The part you have taken out includes Pettigrew grabbing Lupin's wand, and not using it to help himself tranform, but to make sure he can escape. He shoots a stunning spell at Ron, who is handcuffed to Peter, and thus could try and attempt stopping Peter before he transforms. After that Peter shoots another stunning spell, this time knocking out Crookshanks, who is at the moment the only creature not fighting a werewolf that could start hunting a rat in the dark grass. And this is where Harry finally hits Pettigrew with "Expelliarmus", sending Lupin's wand through the air.

Yes, the books were originally made for children and teenagers, but as we can see from Carlin brothers, older people can still enjoy them, and try to fill the plot holes. The reason why nobody was alarmed when somebody tells goblins to take money from a convicted murderer's vault, is a plot hole, and for all I care, it can remain as one. The stuff about Peter using Lupin's wand to escape is in the books, so Carlin brothers using that bit, but leaving stuff out, as an evidence for an animagus possibly needing a wand to transform into their animal form, is misleading.

If neither quality quidditch supplies or Gringotts require proof of identity, couldn't anyone buy a broom using another wizards money as long as they know the vault number? And what's to stop the broom shop from ordering a little extra gold as a "tip"?

As I stated while answering to previous comments from Bones, yes, Sirius just being able to mail in an order for a broom is a plot hole, which creates even more plot holes if you start to think about it too much. My best guess is that if mail order states that the broom in guestion is ment to be a present, it doesn't cause alarm even if the name of the receiver of the broom and the vault number don't match up. After all, nothing implies that Sirius would know (though he most certainly does) Potter's vault number, and it isn't common for wizards to know each others vault numbers. Harry gets to visit the vault that contains the Philosopher's stone and Weasley's vault just because he happens to accompany other people using those said vaults. If we want to reach a bit with our guesses, it could be possible that Sirius sent the key to his vault with the order, which should be enough of an identification.

A big reason Sirius wouldn't go back to Grimuld Place is because it wasn't yet under the Fadalius charm, so he could easily be tracked there. Once the order was established and the charm done, it ironically became the one place he couldn't be tracked.

It actually made perfect sense to me. If you get expelled from Hogwarts then you didn't learn as much as much as was available to you and you supposedly don't really know how to control your magic - your wand gets snapped so you can't do magic because you didn'"t earn the right" to carry a wand and wouldn't unless you were able to get back into a wizarding school. Similar to being expelled from a muggle school = you couldn't get your G.E.D. or diploma (which would be the equivalent of a wand per se). If you're an adult wizard/witch with a wand then you probably graduated from a wizarding school and should be able to control your magic so your wand is put into storage or sent home.

Needing a wand to use animagus powers is bonkers. Especially transforming back into Human form, as most animals can't really carry around a wand as they gallop through a forest as a Stag or fly as an Eagle, etc. I've always assumed it didn't take a wand to transform in either direction.

I don't think you need a wand to use animagus powers. Sirius transformed without using his (he didn't have it). McGonagall doesn't use hers when transforming (but does have it on her). Peter does need a wand when transforming after being forcibly transformed back to human form. Possibly he can't transform back to rat form because of the magic used to transform him back to human form.

I always assumed the reason Peter needed a wand to transform was because he was lifting some kind of hex that Lupin and/or Sirius put on him to prevent him from transforming back, not that he needed a wand to transform normally.

Wands are problably rare and coveted family heirlooms. If the wand chooses the wizard, some wands probably remain loyal to families (at least occasionally). This explanation makes Fred and George’s joke wands make far sense. I didn’t understand why any one would pick up wand that was clearly not your own. Wand clearly seam to be different enough that you should be able to tell them apart. Part of my head canon is that the joke wands had a spell you could tap a wand and it would transfer to reassemble that wand.

Maybe you could read it like he was disarmed in the middle of the transformation, but since Sirius can transform without a wand, I'm inclined to think that all animagi can, rather than Wormtail being that much less competent.

At least in the movie Peter clearly points the wand at himself (I don't remember how it's described in the book) so at the very least he seemed to need to cast some spell on himself either to (like others have pointed out in this comment section) dispel some sort of lingering effect that prevented him from transforming or to transform into his rat form. As for the4 logistics on Peter needing a wand to take back his human form, I don't remember any other scene where Peter transforms between animagus and human form (although we know he must have at least transformed back to human form since the next time we see Peter after he escapes he's no longer in his rat form) it's possible although kind of ridiculous to think of that Peter may have needed assistance to transform out of his animagus form :P

Unless, like their clothes, the wand transforms with them, but Peter got disarmed as he was casting, so he got the spell off but before the want transformed with him it flew out of his hand? THEN he might be stuck as a rat until someone with a wand transformed him back?? I dunno, it really just makes more sense you don't need a wand as an animagus, but there are spells that can keep you from using the ability, and peter used the wand to dispell it. Or Peter just needs the help of a wand where as you usually don't.

I think Peter just needs the wand because he doesn't intend to be killed if Sirius catches him and he needs some self defense. But him transforming doesn't require a wand.

Sending wands to the families of the prisoner actually makes some sense. Neville used his dad's wand before it was broken in the Ministry, and I think it's common in extended lore for wizards to use wands of family members, theoretically because being around them their whole life makes them similar enough to the original owner to be "chosen" by it, so they probably would just send the wand to family members in case it could be reused by someone else more noble, and/or just kept for sentiment.

@@SlimGod26 Fair point, he still did decently in Order just from motivation of Bellatrix breaking out, so it's not completely useless. Even if the wand is completely 100% unusable to the wizarding family it's sent too, (which seems unlikely given reused wands are *sometimes* portrayed as useful, just look at all the wands Harry steals in Hollows) it could still be a sentimental thing. Wands are a huge part of wizard culture, super specific to their owners, sales are only confirmed at wand shops when there's a clear connection between user and instrument. They're basically treated almost like pets almost, so it makes sense why just locking them up in a case in Azkaban or the Ministry would be seen as disrespectful or cruel, hence the compromise. I'm only making stuff up here though.

It could also be a sign of his lack of magical ability. Sirius doesn't need to use his wand just as mcgonagall didn't need her wand to turn into a cat, but we know Peter is kind bad at magic and only achieved rat form because of his friends.

Peter was NEVER forcibly transformed into a rat. He replaced the rat Percy gave to Ron and was in hiding because he believed Voldemort was officially gone. That and NO Animagus NEEDED a wand to change into an animal. If they did then they wouldn't be able to change back.

And I believe how he got his wand is this.... when he flew off on buckbeak, he didn't know where to go and ended up remembering 12 grimauld place, went there, found kreature was still alive and just sent kreature to go get it, because remember, house elves have elf magic and he could just disaperate to wherever they are kept

They didn't meet each other face to face though until almost the end of the book. I guess Lupin could have hidden it somewhere for Sirius to pick up if he ever got out of prison, but Sirius didn't get his want back so it's clear that Lupin didn't have it.

As someone who was abused as a child and escaped my family... I can confirm there is a huuuuuuuuuge aversion to ever visiting the home again. Like, even if you guarenteed me that my parents wouldn't be there, no one would be there, it would just be me and the furniture and belongings... I still don't know that I could ever go back. It would reawaken many repressed memories. It would cause many PTSD flashbacks. Make me relive my worst moments. To step back into a house of abuse is like... I can't even express how hard.

Hagrids wand was only Snapped, because he was expelled from school, they tried to do the same thing with Harry back when they sent him the expulsion letter in order the Phoenix. Though it is intetesting that people with life sentences in azkaban arent having their wands snapped

Hagrid is also half giant and the wizarding world is heavily racist against half breeds. The Ministry was also trying to destroy Harry in every way they could during the time his incident occurred. Both of these can easily explain why Hagrid's wand was snapped, Harry's was almost snapped and the Death Eaters' wands weren't.

Since it was proven that the ministry cant expell students and only the school can. it would make sense as to why his wand was snapped but he was never arrested if the only reason wands are snapped is when you are expelled from school and since clearly the ministry doesnt snap them when they sentence people to azkaban. i dont think it has to do with their prejudice so much as it being the rule that those who are expelled from school are no longer both allowed to be taught magic or have wands

About the point that Pettigrew needed a wand to turn himself back into his rat form, but Sirius didn't need a wand to escape Azkaban: Maybe it was because Pettigrew was turned into his human form from a wand/spell, so he needed a wand to "unlock" his ability to turn into his animagus form again

The book doesn't say Peter needed the wand to transform. Just that he grabbed the wand. He would of course want a wand since he is now on the run. I don't think it had anything to do with the transformation. Quite sure they don't show him cast a spell in himself in the movie either.

Also, the ministry was almost certainly watching Sirius' house in book 3 and 4. By book 5, Dumbledore has A) recruited the Auror leading the hunt for Sirius and B) put the fidelius charm on the house and told Sirius not to leave. No doubt Sirius wouldn't want to go back there; we see how much he hates it. But I imagine he would have done it, if only just to get his wand and bounce, had he not fear it would land him right back in the hands of the dementors. He offers up the house to Dumbledore as headquarters of a group he is part of. Clearly, he was willing to go there under sufficiently necessary circumstances.

The book says he cast a spell to incapacitate Ron and another spell to incapacitate Crookshanks and then he was disarmed by Harry. If he had cast a spell on himself, the book would have given some sort of indication that he had done so.

I think my new head canon is that the wands get sent to their vaults in gringots with the idea that they must retrieve their wand in person. It kept Serious away for a while but the other death eaters probably just went and got them immediately not being afraid of the goblins.

I never got the impression that one might need a wand to transform. When Peter went for the wand, it's simply that him having one would give him a better edge in that situation (as wielding a wand does in most situations). But when he was disarmed, his only option at that point was to flee. I think it overly complicates things to say that some need a wand to transform and some don't. It's more believable to expect that when you master being an animagus, you can perform it without a wand.

I feel like they wouldn't snap the majority of criminal adults' wands because there's a very serious risk they might end up learning to cast magic without a wand, which, with a lot of them being extremely powerful would be a real possibility and potentially catastrophic in aftermath. If this were the case then the setting of Azkaban is actually pretty genius. Keep their wands nearby as a false hope and a distraction, keep them isolated so they can't collect their magical prowess together but also keep the slightest possibility of escape open so that they only focus on that, never being able to break the enchanted bars by themselves anyway.

I always saw the Wormtail going for Lupin's wand scene as yet another movie flub. I always read that part as Pettigrew trying to arm himself, but Harry knocked it away before he could grab it. If I was him I would have been preparing to transform the instant I grabbed the wand. Better to get a wand then flee than stick around and fight 3 angry teens, Sirius, Snape, and a Warewolf. The "he was too late" was because Wormtail had transformed and been lost to the darkness before Harry could react.

Your forgetting wizards are buried with their wands and Azkaban has a graveyard. We know this from when Barty Crouch's mother dies in his place and Sirius sees them bury him. All the Death Eaters, would be expected to die in Azkaban, so for life sentences it makes sense to keep their wands at the prison and bury them with their wand, as is custom for wizards. Sirus's wand would still be a prison, but isn't it lucky in book 5 the two Aurors assigned to track him down are Order members and could just request his wand as part of the investigation or even have the ability just go and get it themselves.

A thing I think about with the wand breaking is that it might be more symbolic then an actual long term punishment. After all you could just get a new wand or take one (though I am sure if you had your wand broken and you are expelled you are black listed from wand shops, but that wouldn't really stop you from being able to make your own). The wand breaking feels more like a "you are being expelled from our society" type of ceremony, like forcing a cop to turn in his gun. We also know that wands can be handed down in a family as both Ron and Neville were originally given wands that belonged to family members first.

The only time Wand Snapping is mentioned is when someone is "Ex-spelled" lol. most notably when Hagrid was Expelled for the whole Chamber of Secrets mess, and when Harry was notified that he had been expelled for using magic to save Dudley. (which was eventually overturned at his trial.) which makes me think its only used in the event a student is Expelled and not when someone is imprisoned.

Theory! Sirius' (and by extension the DEs) wand is left in a forgotten evidence locker in the DMLE and there was a mole in the ministry (Yaxley) that retrieved them for the DE's and Sirius took a detour and stole his wand back and was reunited with it just minutes before the battle of the department of mysteries

In Order of the Phoenix they were going to break Harry's wand and Dumbledore tells Fudge that the Ministry doesn't "have the right to confiscate wands until charges have been successfully proven". So confiscating/breaking wands is a normal punishment for some crimes. I don't think the decision to break his wand had anything to do with Hagrid being a half giant (other than prejudice might have led to his conviction in the first place).

As far as snapping Harry's wand, that could also be because of Harry being the unofficial undesirable no1 due to him speaking out about voldemort's return. I have Prisoner of Azkaban literally memorized because I used to listen to it every night as I was going to sleep. I think the scene with Peter Pettigrew has always been misunderstood. There are two events happening. First, he is going for a wand so that he can perform some kind of magic to help himself. Second, after he is disarmed he changes into a rat. I don't believe those two events are linked. As you mentioned, there is so much other evidence that you do not need a wand to change into your animagus form.

Here is my thought process, what we know is basically the ONLY want to get snapped is Hagrids. The only thing I can think of that makes sense is Hagrids was snapped because he was an unqualified wizard -- thus no use for a wand again ever. Even if he was proved innocent later on -- he still isn't qualified to have wand ever again. The others were all adult fully qualified wizards -- even if they got sentenced for life. on the chance they do get out of Azkaban for whatever reason -- maybe conviction gets overturned -- their wands are kept.

I think it makes way more sense for the ministry to keep the wands in a safe location inside the ministry. The reason Sirius could not get it back before OotP is that it is too risky to get it back. But after the Order was founded they (e.g. Kingsley) can get it back for him/help him get it back. The death eaters get their wands back with the help of someone under the Imperius curse. And the reason nobody notices they're missing is because the ministry sees no need in checking these wands continuously.

I think why wormtail had to use a wand to transform is because in the shrieking shack, lupin and sirius put some kind of spell on peter to prevent him from transforming. He broke the spell right before Harry disarmed him, but transformed already after Expelliarmus

My explanation for wormtail needing a wand is he needed to dispel the charm sirius and lupin cast on him, which forced him into human form. No one would have cast such a charm on sirius when he was arrested because no one knew he was an animagus (apart from lupin, who didn’t tell anyone).

He probably didn't need it anyway until voldy's return because some witches and wizards can perform wandless magic. As in the scene at the beginning of prisoner when it shows a wizard stirring his teacup by moving his finger in circles. Maybe Sirius could do simple spells with wandless magic but needed his wand in the order to be able to duel. Tho I do agree that your explanation of how he got it back and why he waited does make sense.

I always assumed that the reason Wormtail needed the wand wasn't to transform, but to undo the jinx that had FORCIBLY transformed him. We know that people can transform back and forth without wands (like Sirius in Azkaban), but in the shrieking shack we see Lupin and Sirius cast a spell to transform Pettigrew back to human form. So Pettigrew doesn't need to use a want to transform, but when someone else uses magic to force him into human form then he needs a wand to undo it.

I bet Sirius had instructions left at some point at Gringotts that the Potters are allowed access to his vault, and vice versa. This makes sense with him and James being best friends, Sirius being Harry's godfather, and the likelihood of something happening to them during the war. I have a few thoughts: 1) We know that a wands allegiance can be won, so that could have been the case for the death eaters who escaped. We have no confirmation that the wands they all carry after escaping were the same wands they used before their imprisonment. For Sirius, he could have just snuck into a wand shop, tried every wand until one chose him, and then left the money owed. 2) If the wands are in fact the same ones they got when they were 11, maybe they were kept in evidence to track the past spells used. So they were all just stuffed away in an evidence locker until the breakout and all the wands being reclaimed. And maybe the reason Hagrid's was snapped was because he was framed for a crime that didn't involve a wand, was associated with opening the Chamber of Secrets and possibly leading him to be charged with any petrifications that happened before Myrtle's death (But I do like the idea that it came down to wizard prejudice) 3) If Lucius Malfoy was a high ranking Ministry worker, who's to say there weren't other death eaters within Ministry ranks that may have falsified certain records and made it seem like the wands were broken on paper but were kept hidden until the dark lord rose again and freed their fellow death eaters?

The British version of PoA has the complete letter from Sirius, where he talks about his vault. They took it out in the American version. Though the illustrated version I believe has the original for almost everythink except the words "Philosopher's Stone". Like in the very first chapter, baby Dudley learned the word "shan't" instead of "won't"

Pettigrew was disarmed before transforming in that excerpt you read. He doesn't need the wand to turn into and out of rat form. In fact, I'm pretty sure it is the case that no animagus uses a wand to turn back into a human. Wizarding World says (in its steps for how to become an animagus) that you should hide your wand somewhere after transforming into an animal so you can recover it later.

Sirius' dad died before he was imprisoned, but his mother still lived for another few years. But I believe first chance of Sirius knowing that was after he met with Harry in Hogwarts (he talked with Dumbledore). And tbh it might even be later, because Sirius didn't care. My headcanon is that when they were discussing subject of headquarters Sirius mentioned something like 'my childhood home had that spell on it to make it invisible, something like that would be useful', then Dumbledore said 'would you be willing to let us gather there?', Sirius was like 'why me? I'm not the owner', to what Dumbledore respond 'yes, you are, because your parents both died'. Then Sirius went 'oh' and agreed.

something you guys might have overlooked is that the Fidelius Charm is not on the house yet, as it's the ancestral home of the Black family I'd assume most wizards would know where the house is, and as such the house would have been surveillance by the ministry when Sirius broke out, until the Fidelius Charm was placed on it by Dumbledore just before OOTP, at which point Sirius could go back to the house to get his wand
