As a Korean, I am deeply impressed by the expertise showcased in this video. However, I believe there's a crucial piece missing from the narrative. Ultimately, the root of all the problems in Korea lies in the harsh reality that to survive in the global arena, we must live this way. This is by no means an exaggeration. South Korea has a small population of 50 million, a domestic market too small to sustain a robust economy, and a land area less than half the size of England, much of which is mountainous and unsuitable for agriculture. Naturally, we also lack natural resources. Given these harsh conditions, the only viable path for Korea's survival is to leverage its human capital. These challenges have forced Korea to become an extremely competitive society where individuals must constantly strive to improve their skills. Of course, there have been movements to address these societal issues by adopting a more leisurely European lifestyle and reducing competition. However, the recent resurgence of the Cold War, the rapid rise of China, and the decline of Europe have led to a renewed national consensus that we must once again work diligently. Unless artificial intelligence can solve all of our problems, I believe these challenges will persist.

There are many countries in much worse geographical situations like Malta, Switzerland, monaco etc, yet their citizens are wealthy and happy. The issue with Korea is the government in the later half of the 20th century sold their country to the chaebols. And corruption between government officials and chaebols run high as they are so interconnected. Whether you like it or not South Korea might not be openly authoritarian but behind the shadows it is extremely so. If You think a chaebol’s son and heir can’t get away with murder? You’re wrong, even if the news cover fail and people protest. The rich and the government will find a way to give a murderous chaebol a luxury stay in prison.

People praise Singapore's Lee Kuan Yew, but he was a dictator longer than South Korea's Park Chung hee, His son even became hereditary prime minister. But no one is accusing Lee Kuan Yew of being a dictator. Unlike Singapore, which did not have to fight an ideological war during the Cold War in the 20th century, South Korea has been a victim of a proxy war of ideology that has divided its territory to this day. Most accusations of dictatorship or democracy in South Korea come from opposing sides of the ideological war. What could a liberal regime do in an ideological war when one side is capitalism, and the other is an authoritarian communist? Paradoxically, South Korea's economy has become a structural mess since the end of the dictatorship. The social problems you mentioned, such as suicide rates, household debt, and income inequality, did not exist under the dictatorship. If there is a question to be asked about South Korea at this point, it is: why has life become more difficult for its people in the past 30 years since the end of dictatorship and the advent of democracy?
@prohightension20003 ай бұрын
You asked a good question, but SK at the time of Park chung hee suffered massively from poverty. Its during his time that they got better. And during the time, it was like, people were more forced about how they had to live. Not much choices. Their lives were just like that and everyone faced it because they had no choice to begin with. These days, they always have a choice, but its hard for them to decide. People were living hard, and like you said, they still live hard, but the problems are different. Its not the same problems that the koreans are facing as they faced in 1970s. Also about Lee kuan yew, I'm not sure how his reputation in Singapore is, but not many countries forget about their dictators like Singapore. In most of the countries dictators are criticized. Look at Erdogan for example

There were things that the koreans could use, but after the korean war, they just had to build from the scratch whereas in Japan, they had better infrastructure even before the WW2. Which led to fiercely fast economic growth. Everything the japanese empire built was to exploit the country, not to help them. Even without Japan, Korea would be in its place where they are right now. Maybe a bit slower. Joseon dynasty was a whole another country and if anything, china(Qing dynasty) didn't have much part in making the koreans lives harder. Its the korean politicians (during the joseon era) that did. I am Korean. Like all countries in the world, Korea has many social problems. Just a few representative things, Northeast Asia is a region with a very high desire for education. Among them, Korea is one of the countries with the highest educational zeal. In Korea, we aim to compete from an early age and beat the person next to us. And if we lose the competition, we get a lot of criticism from our family members and people around us. I feel like I've lost my goal in life when I'm behind the competition. This basis works throughout Korean life. Expensive house, good education, good car, good way of life. And I want to achieve it quickly. I think it's one of the biggest tragedies in life for my child to live a life that is inferior to others. Korea is a country that develops around Seoul. All the infrastructure is concentrated in Korea. Seoul is the best city to satisfy the desires of Koreans, and for those reasons, 30% of the population lives in Korea. As the population is dense, there are various human groups, and they feel frustrated while closely observing each other's lives. Korean lives start with comparisons and end with comparisons. Even if they die, they judge the lives of the dead based on good funerals and the level of mourners.

Not just in countries but in people too. Being unhappy and rich goes hand in hand. When you have lots of money, you are unhappy because you are sacrificing and focusing so much just to achieve that and the process of being rich and with lots of money makes people unhappy overtime. Samsung is an international company, operating in dozens of countries, employing 300,000 people of all nations. Under global financial economic standards, the sales that international conglomerates like Samsung produce in one country are added to the GDP of the local country that these companies operates in. The sales numbers do not get added to the GDP of the conglomerate's country of origin, in this case, South Korea's GDP. Yet that's what they're doing here. The media still adds up all the GDP that Samsung produces around the world and compares it to South Korea's GDP, over-inflating Samsung's GDP portion of South Korea's GDP. No doubt Samsung is still a huge influence in the South Korean economy, but it's certainly not 25% of South Korea's GDP which is an inaccurate and oversimplified description of the issue. If you add the sales that Samsung make in South Korea strictly, Samsung's portion of the GDP of South Korea is far less than 25%.

It’s a video that shows the cross-section of the Korean economy! But I would like to briefly add about the history of Korea‘s democracy that was omitted here! The reason why Korea was able to develop culturally is because it is a democratic society where we can talk about the dark side of Korean society without hesitation. Many people were sacrificed to achieve the democratic society that people were aiming for in the 1960s and 1980s. I think there is still a long way to go for Korean politics to mature, but I think it will solve social problems well because it is an open society where you can freely share your thoughts while protesting or discussing in the agora!!

S.Korea or entire Korea was and still is always have been under heavy pressure from both internal and external factors. Korea is very strategically important and thus it is often in cross road of super powers and Geopolitics. This is no new surprise and progressing remarkably well even under pressure. S.Korea is pressure by not just N.Korea's totalitarian but also from China, Russia, Japan and US even NATO & EU. Imagin, country is being pressure by almost all G7 countries plus BRICS and G20 at same time. However, progress considerably well above expectation.

At the end you imply it might be a consequence of capitalism, but I would say it is a conqeuence of the lack of capitalism that caused this. As you see it is still very much the conglomerates that were brought to the top in the days of the dictatorship that run most of the economy. The state controlled steering of the economy during this dictatorship might have been on most principles if capitalist forces, but it lacks the most important one: Freedom. When it is not the natural force that makes people pursue growth, it simply isn't sustainable. The fact that you are basically forced to move to the city, because it is the only way to have an income, means you are not their voluntarily, and not being in the place you want to be is a very big factor of unhappiness. Not only economically but also culturally this takes a big toll. Whatever the doctrine is that a tyranny upholds, people will eventually embrace it(USSR, China, Nazi-Germany, Christianity, Islam). So when the doctrine is that you need to work hard so your country can be great or your family will be okay, this will be the norm. And when that doctrine doesn't resonate with your personal beliefs anymore, you will feel very lost. I would therefore argue that it is the best case study of what happens when you leave freedom out of the picture, even if it means growth and prosperity for a little while. But there are obviously other factors like rural vs urban birthrates, conservative thinking and religion that are influential here.

There are dark and bright sides in any country, but Korea of the future is not promising. Excessive real estate assets accumulated by debt, deepening polarization, low birth rate, super-aged society, extremely competitive society, high suicide rate, generational conflict, gender conflict, inter-Korean unification, political conflict, low economic growth rate, and these are all structurally difficult to solve

Ugh. Someone was paid to digest talking points provided by some propaganda machine and produce this video. Koreans work 2,000+ hours annually? No. They're at work 2,000+ hours annually; they work maybe 1,000 hours. And all their schooling and social conditioning teaches them the cost of everything and the value of too little. The country is too much gloss and too little substance, and it's disappointing to see so many people embracing this trope as a model when everyone here will readily tell you that its greatest product has been misery and disaffection. Embarrassing videos of foreigners mispronouncing everything while hyping up government-approved narratives isn't helping, either.

It's not. Besides the hardworking population, Korea got rich through government intervention and the planned economy which at the time was seen as anti-capitalist. Now Korea's problems stem from culture and the fact that it's a small, de facto island with almost no natural resources which creates the need to compete on the international market, which causes intense competition.
