The Jackson 5 were on an unprecedented role almost immediately. Their first four singles went to number one on the American pop music sales charts. They immediately went from 5 unknown talent show veterans to international superstars.
The transition was difficult to experience. The idea of moving from the gray wasteland that the steel industry was creating to the the bright lights and glitz of Hollywood must have been jarring. Not only was there a shift in environment and demographic. Their were also knew requirements. Motown had signed the Jackson 5 because they needed a superstar template for the 1970's. The 70's were embracing newer styles. Sly and the family stone were innovating call and response song structure in ways that the Motown and Beatles production style did not utilize. The Corporation, that included the recent college graduates Fonse Mizell, Freddie Perren and veteran songwriter Deke Richards were plugged into the new ethic that was taking over the radio. The Jackson 5 had perfect contrasting vocal styles. Their was Michael the tiny powerhouse whose vocals were rocket fuel for the songs created for them. There was Jermaine, whose vocals had a plaintive yearning mature tone. Occasionally you could also hear Jackie bringing in a very adult Stylistics type of falsetto. Adding to the breakneck speed that the Jackson 5 achieved superstardom was the years of experience that had packed into an extremely shorty 6 years.
Ever since Michael Jackson blew away the audience at his elementary school pageant the Jackson 5 took a northward trajectory. They were already accustomed to arranging their stage act and their vocal performances. Motown had lightning in a bottle and since Berry Gordy was operating on the idea of hitting the J5's demographic with great songs, he had to prep them for hitting the road as well. Susanne de Passe was their de facto manager. That meant she had to shepherd them in every aspect of their transition from mid west talent show winners to global superheroes. She was up to the task. With the help of Shelly Berger, another Motown pro. The Jackson 5 not only had a handful of million sellers in their locker (I want you back, abc, the love you save and I'll be there), The Jackson 5 were booked to tour the biggest venues that the country had. They did not disappoint.

As soon as Motown stepped in, Father Joe was left out. So Joe's plan to get them that Las Vegas act in 1973/1974 was a way to get back control of his boys. The move to CBS/Sony in 1975 as a result of the success of those Vegas shows was further control away from Motown. Problem is his boys have now practically grown into men by this time. The money outsiders saw in Michael ALSO guaranteed that Joe's control of his boys was not to last. They told Katherine to tell Michael's brothers to save his money because they were taking him solo. Michael does The Wiz in 1977/1978, gets with Quincy for this special solo record in 1978/1979 called Off The Wall... ...and Michael fires his father Joe as manager in 1979 as the album takes off. The wall between Michael & his family was formally forged here where you had to get an appointment to see Michael. And 3 years later, the wall would be forged in platinum with the multi-platinum best-selling album of all time Thriller. Joe moved on to baby sister Janet to control her then she takes "CONTROOOOL" in 1986 away from HIM. However, without Joe's efforts there would have been nothing to take control of in the first place & no one can ever take that away from him.

He really was responsible for all phases of Jackson Bigness. No J5 if he didn’t prep them for Motown. No Janet if he didn’t push her acting career. No King of Pop if he didn’t push them to Epic/CBS/Sony.

@@TheThrillerEffect AGREED.Without Joe's relentless pushing and prodding they wouldn't have been able to live in Encino,Ca. No super-stardom,instead when people would be saying,oh,you Joe's son Michael who works at the train station ??? LOL.

@@TheThrillerEffect That and because it was before cable when we only had two clear channels in the area we lived in. If they were on a CBS network channel, like Ed Sullivan, we were not close enough to get a clear signal. That’s why l didn’t see them until their third national television appearance on the Andy Williams Show on 01/31/70, an NBC channel with a station in my hometown, and didn’t see them again until April 1971, on an ABC station, which was close enough in a neighboring city. Anything on CBS we missed completely.

7:56 *Marlon Jackson:* "... matter of fact that's how we learned how to dance. Dodging that belt." That goddamn Marlon, man! That sounds just like something he would say. He always kept it real.

12:34 I LOVE it when Marlon speaks natural! Hahahaha! Without his Motown "proper" public relations speaking. I hear a lot of Joe's way of talking in Marlon's voice. That accent & even the flow of the words.

Berry Gordy shouldn't have been surprised that the Jackson 5 could be a viable touring act. These guys dominated at The Apollo back-to-back. If they could survive there, they could survive anywhere. ESPECIALLY back then when The Apollo was MUCH more brutal to the performers.

This is the progression. God gave the Jackson 5 the talent. Katherine nurtured the talent. The neighborhood friends exampled the talent. Joseph trained the talent. The Chitlin' Circuit honed the talent. Motown boosted the talent. The world received the talent. And the talent received the world.

+thankthelord Well 12 in mid-1970, that is. Michael's birthday is pretty late in the year. He was 11 at the time of that February 1970 appearance on American Bandstand. Michael did what Motown told him to do: shave 2 years off of his real age.
