Yeah it's pretty depressing. I sometimes wonder about what happened next in the original split timeline, the one that the original Trunks traveled back to. That version of history is one in which Goku survives the heart virus, but then Trunks and the Z-Fighters are able to take down the androids. Bulma probably never invented a time machine in that timeline, so the Cell of that timeline when he eventually awakens would be without androids to absorb and without a means to go get some in another time. Because Cell never shows up during the time frame that he does in the history we are familiar with, Gohan never awakens Super Saiyan 2, Goku doesn't die, and everyone ends up at that point in history a fair bit weaker due to not doing as much training. Goten would be growing up with his dad still around, though Goku probably wouldn't unlock Super Saiyan 3 because of being alive. Also noteworthy is that it's unlikely that anything would have happened to the original Trunks the same as Cell nearly killing him, so Vegeta wouldn't have that near-loss experience to help reshape him into a more caring person down the line. With that setup, there's a lot that could go wildly differently from then on. It could go either way with the Buu saga, with Buu either destroying the world and that's the end of that because the Z-Fighters are too weak, or Buu's resurrection being prevented. It's entirely possible that Super Saiyan 2 just never even pops up before Beerus comes looking for the Super Saiyan God.

When Trunks arrived to see him fight Piccolo, Cell recognized him and said that he will kill him in this timeline as well. Knowning Cell he would note if this Trunks was way weaker than the one he killed. Cell thought he was invincible until he met Piccolo.

I think he found the lab and used the information to help Bulma create a shutdown device. He alluded to his desire to find Gero's lab when meeting Goku, and Bulma canonically knew the approximate location of it. Not to mention, he was killed too easily by Cell too have gone into the Chamber... Edit: I think there's a misunderstanding that I said he might have gone into the Chamber. On the contrary, I believe his defeat at the hands of Cell largely rules that out. So to be clear, I think he used a device rather than going into the chamber while in the past. Edit 2: I just thought of this, but it's also possible that something caused the events to be altered during that timeline - And when he returned to help deal with the androids, Bulma was late to arrive, which means that Piccolo and Vegeta managed to defeat Gero & 19 before Gero could escape to his lab. Bulma then arrived and identified Gero, and pointed everyone to his lab, which is where they found what they needed for Trunks to defeat the Androids in the future, or simply found the shutdown device that was there. Although that means they should have found the sub-lab, which means they should have learned about Cell - Especially if Bulma decided to accompany. But that Trunks seemed caught totally off guard by Cell, so this is unlikely. Unless Trunks left before they were able to investigate the lab.

My weird random thought would be that in the Unseen Timeline, one of the ripple effects from Trunks' time travel didn't occur. The timing of when Goku contracts the Heart Virus is the same as in the Original & Future Timeline instead of delayed like in the Main Timeline. So Goku has the virus well before the Androids show up, but now has the medicine to cure it from Original Timeline Future Trunks. The other events proceed as in the Main Timeline, with the Z fighters training, and it being Androids 19 and 20 that show up. But Goku isn't overwhelmed by the Virus and they are able to beat 19 and 20 without 17 and 18 ever needing to be awakened. When Original Timeline Future Trunks finally shows up, they are able to figure out everything out about Dr. Gero at their leisure. Original Timeline Future Trunks gets the shut down device for 17 and 18, and proceeds back to his timeline without ever having needed to fight the Androids or any knowledge of Cell.

It makes you wonder how did things turn out in that present timeline that version of future trunks traveled to. There was andriod 17 and 18 but no cell. There possibly could had been andriod 16. I feel like the biggest battle in that time line would had been goku vs andriod 16 which in the end is possible that the ordeal worked it self out and all 3 andriods are safe and alive seeing how they didnt really have evil intentions. The funny part is since no one knows about cell, cell is literally going to appear in the past time line sometime after the dbs super hero movie takes place, but then would those event ever happen? No cell appears means no cell max, or maybe a weaker version of cell max since the original cell blue prints does exist but he never reaches perfect since most of the Z fighters should be strong enough to handle him

I don't think it is imposible, Cell seemed quite fond of the Solar Flare technique in that stage. I can imagine a scene where Trunks have been hearing about people disappearing, leaving only clothes behind. This is worrying, since he just killed the androids, there shouldn't be any more threats around. So Trunks gets his time machine ready to go back in time and ask for help, but he hears a noise and puts the wrong input in the date of the time machine, programming it to go back in time one year before his initial trip. He goes to investigate, and is confronted by this weird monster. He doesn't know ANYTHING about cell, not that he is made out of his friends' dna or that he can use their techniques. So Cell using the Solar Flare would have taken him quite out of guard, like it did with Picorro. And before he could blast him away, he would start absorbing him. Even if Trunks somehow managed to get free from the first attack, he would be weakened, and Cell would be stronger. Thus, Cells ends up defeating Trunks, and steals the time machine.

I think the generally excepted idea was that he found Gero's lab. Then Trunks made a shutdown device using his leftover work. But I don't think that was ever even stated in the Manga or Anime. It's just a highly speculated theory

I always assumed he found the plans and had one of his moms make the shutdown remote, turned them off and blew them to hell. Then had his neck snapped by cell. I don't see cell being able to kill trunks if he actually became strong enough in the past to defeat the androids like the future trunks we know. But as we learned in dragon ball super it doesn't matter how high your power level is, if you are surprised and not on your guard you can easily die from things that ordinarily would never be able to harm you.

I don't think it was the shutdown device. At least not the same one that we see in the main timeline. I think if Trunks found the blueprints to Gero's lab, he would have obliterated it, likely killing Cell. I also think Trunks is thorough enough and to the point enough that he would have done the same in the future if he knew there was a lab still, likely killing Cell. Could be that Bulma found a way to make the shutdown device WITHOUT the plans. Maybe they took the remains of 19 and brought them to Bulma looking for a plan, who knows. I think the Z Fighters trained enough to defeat the Androids in the Unseen Timeline. Then Trunks went back to his future with enough power to overcome the Androids, but not enough to overcome Cell. Cell may have been able to even sense Trunks and knew what his power needed to be in order to defeat him while Trunks had no idea that Cell was lurking around.

I think when he goes back to the future (his present) and faces the imperfect Cell there, that Cell had already left the lab and was looking for the Androids so him going back to the basement lab wouldn't have found Cell for him to destroy. But then if they'd found the plans to make the shutdown remote themselves to destroy the Androids then they'd have found Cell and at least /known/ about him and be expecting him, I don't think they did and instead used the remnants of the destroyed remote they found in the main lab or somehow it survived and they used it If he had become strong enough to kill the androids then he'd have been strong enough to kill cell too since after reverting to his larval form it took him 4 years to recover to a point where he was around the same strength as Android 17 & Piccolo - in my mind at least they were very nearly on par or if anything Cell and Piccolo were on par and 17 was a little weaker which was why Cell was able to absorb him at all.. As for Cell lurking and detecting Trunks' power to know how strong he needed to be to overcome him, I remember a lot of times in the series the Z Fighters powers aren't at their full power until it's necessary, and without even meaning to do so before they figure out how to, their full power would be suppressed, on top of that he might not have known Trunks was a super saiyan too, who knows.. that's just my thoughts anyway lol

@@zerocks88I think if the Trunks that dies goes to Gero’s lab in his time, I agree that Cell is already out and about drinking people, but that doesn’t mean that Trunks would have any idea if or when Cell would find or attack him or Bulma. The second Trunks only knows Cell’s plan for sure since Cell told Piccolo in the main timeline. So hypothetically, if Cell lowers his power, he can sneak up on an unsuspecting Trunks, who himself has his guard down, and kill him. But personally I agree that if Trunks goes through training in the time chamber, more often than not there’s such a gap in strength between him and Cell that he should often fight back and live regardless, so I think that Trunks likely used a shutdown device in that timeline

He wouldn't had needed to do that if they where there in the future with him. Then Trunks would just sends them back in time, instead of needing to go back in time himself.

That was speculated by Piccolo, but Cell specifically says he only pushed the time machine button and ended up traveling four years prior the android's awakening. At the time everyone was in Namek. This is either an inconsistency or Trunks was planning to create another timeline and deal with Dr. Gero by himself without having anyone else involved, given he knew where the lab was.

Something I think about after rewatching (for the 8th time) Trunks knew Goku was going to show up to the minute and win but chose to fight Frieza and king Cold. Regardless of it changes the timeline or not Trunk's Saiyan nature took over and wanted to destroy the current greatest terror.

Trunks believed goku was going to arrive later instead of sooner. In trunks timeline, the z fighters all Most likely was in a battle with frieza and his soldiers and goku in space probably started to sense someone's energy fading away so he decided to use instant transmission to quickly get back to earth. Future bulma most likely never told trunks about goku use of the instant transmission, so he decided to avoid anyone from getting hurt from the start and decided to kill frieza and his father himself thinking goku ship was going to get there late while everybody else gets their ass kicked

After Trunks killed Frieza and King Cold they had to wait for Goku's arrival. It was hinted that they were waiting for at least an hour or two. According to Trunks, Goku showed up and finished them off. He just arrived "too late". Which means, with the force Frieza and King Cold had at their disposal, they probably attacked a nearby city within that time frame.

Interesting theory. I’m inclined to believe it, however, I don’t believe that Cell catching Trunks off guard is a reasonable explanation for him defeating Trunks. We have seen characters losing battles in base form and turn into super Saiyan while simultaneously being in a chokehold or other defenseless position and still transform to break free. I think this would’ve been the case if Trunks truly did go through the same training as the main timeline. I think original Trunks did not train in the time chamber which lead him to needing to use the shut down device.

I think the remote idea is the most plausible. You have to remember that Trunks didn't know that much about Goku and the other's personal views about fighting yet. He only learns about that mentality when he comes back in time when 19 and 20 are around. Its entirely possible that Trunks, who never understood the fighter mentality at that time, would want to try and bring the remote back in time to stop the androids. If he had succeeded though without getting killed by Cell, he would of then realized it was a waste of time.

There's a possibility they could have beaten the Androids in the unseen timeline without the use of the time chamber. I forget how the manga paints it, but in the anime Trunks says that his versions of 17 and 18 are weaker than the ones we see them take on in the main timeline of the show; presumably bc of some sort of butterfly effect. Trunks was shocked that his presence changed things so much, that was until we found out that Cell was likely the cause of most of these butterfly effects. So, it is very possible 17 and 18 would be weaker in the unseen timeline since Cell was not present to alter things. That being said, if they were weaker, I think after training normally over those years, given the heads up from Trunks, and Goku still being alive, Trunks, Vegeta and Goku tg would likely be able to defeat these weaker versions. In the movie version future, Gohan was able to put up a decent fight against them alone and likely could have taken them on in a 1v1

@NicGlol yeah, I mean, it's just for fun. There is no right answer bc I'm sure AT as well as Toei Animation did not think it out as much as fans do, but in the world of DB, these timelines exist. The rings in Super remind us of that. There's not much point to the convo, but there doesn't have to be. It's just for fun, it should just be a casual convo. Not saying you don't agree with that sentiment bc why would you watch the video and comment if you didn't feel that way.

I also think part of it comes down to that Trunks really had a limited frame of reference. Like, in the future we don't know whether he ever saw them get serious. So when he went back in time and found that Vegeta was holding his own against 18 and that when he finally joined in the Androids took the Z fighters very seriously? It makes sense. Gohan meanwhile, while a hardened fighter, probably lacked the resources and opportunity to train like his past counterparts were and frankly didn't have any of the other Z fighters around to help him, so he probably wasn't able to push the androids hard enough until the day they decided to kill him. So I felt Gohan was pretty weak compared to his past counterpart versions, who had 3 years to train *just* to confront this threat. And even then, they still weren't ready for 17 and 18. Gohan in the past meanwhile, when he finally did learn Super Sayian, was strong enough to defeat Cell. Quality of training available makes a massive difference to not being able to fight 17 and 18 at all, to being at least being an entertaining challenge. Likewise while Trunks was a Super Sayian, he was always been shown to be the most junior of the three, so it makes sense to me that he isn't necessarily as accurate in his predictions, likely until he encountered Freiza he's never had the opportunity to cut loose and actually compare himself against his peers.

@Lord Biscuit the Tossable yeah I agree with most of what you're saying, and yeah, of course Gohan is much stronger in the main timeline than the one where he died to the Androids. If you watch the fight in the movie though, I don't think the Androids were holding back against Future Gohan. As a team they were holding back, but if you watch it again, I think it's evident that Gohan may win if it was just one of the Androids and not two, but with two if them they overpower him easily. So idk, I take Trunk's comment about them being stronger versions of themselves in the past seriously. That's why Vegeta and the crew still got mopped by them after all their prep time. Vegeta was nv really holding his own against 18 in the past also, she was toying with him at first, and when she let out her full power Vegeta couldn't do anything, then she snapped his arm for fun lol. I think they could have easily beaten the future Androids as a group though.

​@@lilmac2442 That's fair, though I recall the manga adaptation of that scene of them telling Gohan that they were only ever using about half their maximum output against him. Now they were bored of him, to his absolute horror. It immediately changed to Trunks waking up post-battle and finding him dead. That being said; I much prefer the anime interpretation of this. Namely, because "oh I wasn't being serious" had become a trope at that point. They killed him because they saw him as a severe annoyance, but the thing is, Trunks never witnessed 17 or 18 fight seriously; they had only really screwed around with Gohan and Trunks. Perhaps Vegeta's encounter with them was the first time he had ever seen 18 push that hard, only for her to use her full strength and absolutely crush him in seconds. Kinda implies that Trunks, despite having survived the Androids for pretty much all his life, didn't know the entire truth about how strong they were. It further shows that 17 in the past actually got increasingly motivated the more Piccolo tested him; unlike his future counterpart, he met someone who could challenge him as a peer, not just a mere pest he could easily kill when he tired of it. Though I always do wonder why they didn't kill them during their initial engagement, perhaps finding Vegeta and the Z-Fighters "amusing" in the same way, they found Gohan spared them from being killed so quickly.

It's as simple as this, the Trunks without the jacket sleeves or without the jacket all together is the post Hyperbolic time chamber Trunks, the one with the jacket/sleeves is the weak Trunks with no training, he simply pulled out a win with the androids and lost to Cell in the original timeline just for the story to introduce cell in the main timeline.

The biggest mystery is why was time machine set for main timeline if trunks had already went back to past for a different timeline. If he was going back to let z warriors, know he succeeded in beating 17 and 18 why did he go to a timeline where none of them knew his existence and why was it programmed to go back in time a year before frieza's arrival to earth ?

So, my theory is that, that version of Trunks hadn't time travelled before. He found some other way of defeating the androids and then planned on using the time machine to go back and save Goku/ tell them how he defeated the androids. That's why it's set for that time, and it's why Cell uses it, because he knows the androids will be alive in that timeline.

It's highly unlikely that Trunks didn't use a device or some other strategy to destroy the androids. For him to become as strong as he did in the main timeline, it's very unlikely that Cell would be able to overpower him or get the drop on him so much so that he'd kill him before Trunks could power up and kill Cell. I think one of the main messages of the whole saga was that challenges makes you stronger, and is superior to taking shortcuts. Goku didn't want to kill Gero early to prevent the androids from being created. Vegeta allowed Cell to absorb 18, and it led to Gohan fighting Cell, and Goku helped Cell recover and get stronger to be a bigger challenge to Gohan to challenge him enough that his true power would come out. I think the Trunks that didn't make it died because he took the easiest path he could, unlike the Future Trunks we see.

The YYH sadness theme at 6:40 lol Bulma always tells the Z fighters where Gero’s lab was the moment she sees who Android 20 really is. Assuming Cell time traveled for the very first time in the main timeline, then the Trunks who was killed by Cell in his timeline may have never known what Cell truly was. In the main timeline, Bulma sees Android 20, *then* finds the Time Machine with Trunks and Gohan, then Trunks and Krillin go to Gero’s lab. So things branch off somehow after Bulma sees 20, but *eventually*, at least Trunks always goes to the lab, at bare minimum they find the blueprints for 17 and 18, and blowup a still developing Cell. But that doesn’t mean they actually know what Cell is capable of, or where Cell would be when Trunks goes back to his timeline. Much of what Cell is came to light when Piccolo confronted him, otherwise he’s a mystery

Unfortunately, I always found the "Trunks used the Shutdown Device" thought to be most plausible option but also to be an unlikely scenario on top of that. Because when you remember how really near you have to be to the Android Twins for this Device to work on them, Trunks must have used his entire life's worth of luck to deactivate them. That would also explain how he died against Cell afterwards, all his luck gone

Regarding the unseen timeline, what if they never end up fighting 17 and 18? What if Cell's "butterfly effect" changed other things, like Goku not taking his medicine or Trunks not arriving at the fight scene on time? If Goku's heart was completely healed by the time 19 and 20 show up, he and Trunks would most likely defeat them with ease, then they'd force Dr. Gero to take them to his lab and deactivate 17 and 18 while in their pods with the remote Gero had. Trunks would use that remote to destroy the androids in the future and there won't be any reason for him to train in the time chamber, so he'll be weaker than Imperfect Cell

I think one thing to keep in mind is that the future doesn't have to be fully deterministic in DragonBall I.E. the future isn't set in stone. It's possible that cell defeats Trunks in some instances but is defeated in some instances, and we happen to see the events of a timeline where Cell succeeds for whatever reason. Of course in our currently viewed timeline Cell always killed Trunks and travels to the past because those events are that particular Cell's past and the never can never be altered in your own timeline. We never see a Cell that is defeated by Trunks or gets unlucky because he would never travel back and cause our timeline. Timetravel always causes a new timeline wherever the destination is(atleast in the past) but the events leading up to the time travel are fluid and so is the future after that time travel event. Imagine a timeline where the Z-fighters don't destroy embryo Cell in his lab(this happens in 10% of the timelines), and in that future he somehow gets a timemachine(doesn't matter from who or how). If he travels back in time just like the OG Cell did we would have 2 Cell in the world with one that has full knowledge of the other's existence. P.S. did a bit of napkin writing and the timeline stuff is just messed up. Going off the logic I said, there is an original timeline where Cell is the only time traveler since Cell travels to before any of the Trunks arrive... I give up 😵‍💫

Just to clarify a few things because the time travel stuff goes out of hands a little bit. 1. The original timeline is the one we all know where Goku fought against Frieza etc. 2. The second timeline is the one from which Trunks came, where all Z-fighters were killed by 17 and 18 3. The third timeline Cell came from, where he killed Trunks, took his time machine and arrived in the original timeline where he was killed by Gohan? Am I right or did I miss something?

I think OG Future Trunks defeated the Androids because of the Time Chamber. I think the OG Trunks tried to come back to the Main timeline three times. First, to warn Goku. Second to figure out why his world didn't change,. Realizing that the Androids were different from what he knows, helped the Z Fighters by tracking down where 20 fled to, realizing he now knows where to find the plans for the remote to shut down the androids, maybe even how to trigger remotely the bombs within them. Then, the third trip ended up with Cell sneak attacking OG Trunks. Bringing us to what the timeline we know to be.

The whole reason they went in the chamber in the main timeline was cause of the threat of cell,with piccolo/kami probably being dead in that timeline he wouldn't know about it,even if piccolo was there there really wouldn't be a need to use it since the androids are weaker than cell.

The way cell tells the story and the anime shows the flashback it looks like trunks pre time chamber. But we need to analyze that a little further 1) At that moment there wasn’t (at least for the manga) the idea of a super powerful and buff trunks that cames from the past.. we know akira just created cell because his director gave the idea and them he came with an origin for the monster. The anime, on the other hand, knew from the manga that trunks was stronger later but that would be spoiling for us his new visual right? I think the most probably thing that happened is that cell attacked trunks off guard, absorbs him and go to past. For me the great mistery on that was the year the Time Machine arrived.. because no way trunks would go further back in time, doesn’t make sense. I think akira was planning on explaining this later and he forgot.. because trunks on main timeline acknowledge the fact that the time machine came earlier, probably akira had plans for that… on my headcannon it makes more sense that cell just choose the year he wanted before launching the Time Machine but he clearly says he just presses launch button 2) If trunks used the control device, he would have to know about cell. The plans for creating the remote control were in the underground lab, so if he or any other Z fighter went underground to find the plans, they would have find cell there, so trunks would know where to search in his timeline. Or maybe some dumb z fighter like yamcha went alone, grab the plans and blows everything up without even acknowledging cell’s there, thats always a possibility

I think that without Cell's presence in the unseen timeline, Goku, Gohan, Vegeta, and Trunks did not train as hard as they did in the main timeline. This means that Trunks could have only been a little bit stronger than Piccolo (Kami absorbed) in this unseen timeline after training ONCE in the Hyperbolic time chamber (there wouldn't be no need for him to take a second turn in the chamber due to Cell not existing in this time). This means that he would be more powerful than Androids 17 and 18 in the future timeline, but weaker than Imperfect Cell. After defeating the androids in his time, Trunks could have not trained intensely by himself due to him not knowing Cell's existence, thus being weaker than Cell when he finally arrives 3 years after the Androids defeat.

The main timeline we saw Trunks left after he took out Frieza & King Cold and share everything to Goku and didn't came back until Android 19 & 20-Dr. Gero appear so what he has been doing during the 3 years before he returns probably nothing or could be a different Trunks from another different timeline re-appear during the Android saga. From then until the Cell game tournament, there is no explanation if he went back to his timeline in between after Cell was completely defeated by Gohan. If he did, he may have brought Vegeta with him back to the future to help him defeat the future Android 17 and 18 in his original timeline is what I guess??

Besides, parts of the Z Warriors like Krillin, Piccolo, Tien, Yamcha, and Gohan would've used the shutdown remote no questions asked and that's not even including Trunks himself. Krillin only destroyed the remote because he was charmed to 18 and even if he used it, he would've been too late to destroy 18 as Cell would've rushed to her lifeless body first before Krillin could consider destroying her. In a timeline without Cell even if we keep Krillin's predicaments, Krillin would've had plenty of time to shutdown 17 and 18 as well as destroying them. The timeline where Trunks who's killed by Cell could 100% have a shutdown remote for the androids.

The anime special version of events actually makes more sense regarding SSJ. As seen with Goku and Vegeta previously, you can't just "train" into a SSJ state, it takes rage. For Goku it was Frieza killing Krillin, for Vegeta it was something threatening his life after he got pushed to the brink and stopped caring. Even for Gohan it took his own dad going SSJ and trying to kill him with a Kamehameha for Gohan to transform himself. So it taking Gohan to die in the anime special and then that heartbreak and rage leading Trunks to transform himself, that's exactly how SSJ is supposed to be done.

Yeah at that point I guess it didn't matter anymore, but Future Trunks happened in the Cell Saga where SSJ was still being treated like a big deal. At that time, Trunks was the standout and everybody else up to that point had to of gone though some sort of drama to get SSJ. So from Cell and prior, the anime version made more sense. If we count Buu saga and Super, then yeah the manga version with Trunks just having SSJ fits in.

If the unseen Trunks was strong enough to defeat 17 & 18 without tricks, he wouldn't be easy prey for Cell, especially one who fed only on humans in a ravaged future with a dwindling population. Being caught off guard wasn't really a thing before DBS. And as LSM noted, the remote scenario also makes little sense - Goku & Vegeta wouldn't have allowed it and all of them would have used the chamber, making the remote obsolete even for Trunks.

Trunks 1 went back, stuff progressed identically to the show but without Cell there. Krillin didn't get the chance to mess up shutting the Androids down because Cell 1 wasn't there, Trunks 1 may have even used the device on them. So they got one trip through the time chamber, and possibly Vegeta finally got the W on the androids. They party, Trunks 1 goes back and wrecks the Androids or uses the device. Honestly original timeline he probably did use the device instead of fighting them. Take no chances after all. Cell 1 was likely as strong as when he wrecked 17 and Piccolo, so a sneaky suck attack would be feasible on a greener less battle hardened Trunks. Cell 1 goes back to a timeline altered by Trunks 1, and multiverse theory alters it further. So Trunks 2 goes to back to a timeline already altered by Trunks 1 and Cell 1's trips instead of his own actual past timeline. For whatever reason the Time Machine always goes to the prime timeline not Trunks real one. He explained it himself that he can't change his own present when they suggested he go back again to warn them better.

I'm just spit balling here, what if original timeline Trunks never went back to warn about the androids? It seems Trunks knows that Gero is the one who made the androids before any time travel, and Bulma independently had information about the general area that his lab could/would be. Meanwhile, Bulma continues to work on her time machine as Trunks looks. What if Trunks found the lab and Gero's research, being able to make the remote shut-off device? Armed with the device, he takes down androids 17 and 18. Now with his world safe(or so he would think), he plans a trip to the past using his mother's now finished time machine in a hope to save everyone with the shut-off device. Trunks sets the time in the machine, and Cell kills Trunks. Also to note here, I don't think it matters if Cell snuck up on Trunks or not. If these events happened, I believe Trunks would be far weaker than Cell's base form. So it wasn't that Trunks was going back to update the Z Fighters, that would have been his original visit to the past to save it. With Cell going back in time here, he is not making the main timeline. Rather, he's making Future Trunks' timeline. Who will then travel to the past and create the main timeline. TL:DR Original Timeline Trunks found Gero's Lab, made the shut-off device and killed the androids Original Timeline Cell kills this weak version of Trunks, goes back in time and makes the Future Trunks timeline we know Future Trunks goes back in time to warn and creates the main timeline potential plot holes, there could be two Cell's in the FT timeline and it's unlikely Cell goes completely unnoticed by Trunks in the FT timeline before his first visit to the past. Also, original Trunks probably would have read about Cell in Gero's research. I don't think this last one matters too much, because Trunks wouldn't be able to do much anyway; unless Gero also was planning a way to control Cell like he was with the other androids.

What makes the most sense to me is OG Trunks travels back in time, helps the Z fighters defeat 17 and 18 and returns to his time with enough training to beat the cyborgs from his time. A few years later, Cell emerges, learns of a fighter strong enough to defeat 17 and 18 so he sneaks around absorbing enough people until he's more than strong enough to kill Trunks and steal the time machine. Any scenario where OG Trunks or Bulma find Gero's sub-basement with 17 and 18's schematics sitting next to an incubating Cell doesn't make sense to me, because after getting the schematics they would have every reason to nuke the place out of an abundance of caution and the Cell threat would be over.

I've always assumed cell and trunks were from different timelines...cell showed up threes years before the androids he had to devolve to fit in the ship then it took three years to evolve meaning he came in place of trunks before trunks killed Frieza and king cold....remember trunks and Gohan found the ship so cell is technically from his own timeline were he found trunks before his first trip...in his timeline trunks had killed the androids but his reasoning for returning to the past may have been different like possibly collecting the dragonballs or possibly still to go warn everyone of the androids arrival but two things are for sure....cell came at the same point trunks would've killed Frieza and the second thing is trunks still killed Frieza so that would mean they both made it to the past three years before the androids attacked....I suspect time travel has more of a ripple effect rather than a branching effect ...time travel with the kai rings may make a singular timeline but time travel through technological means may have a different effect...for example trunks didn't just come to the past he left medicine in a time it shouldn't exist maybe that actions equal reaction was cell to ensure Goku still died ....just my theory thanks for reading through my poor grammar/pronunciation
