I'm reading my daughter's textbook here in Tokyo, and it tells in quite depth how powerful the Turkish were, and how important of an empire the Ottomans were. I don't know why, but here in Japan, we have a very positive attitude towards Turkish people. In the Iranian revolution, Turkey sent Japanese citizens in Iran a charter plane to extract them - and when I visited Istanbul, I came across many Turks who spoke Japanese. Sadly, my country has xenophobia towards middle eastern people - since groups that steal JDM cars to send to the US, tend to be Kurdish. But there is some kind of "relief", when one finds out your odd middle eastern looking guy is Turkish. Like, "oohh your Turkish, ok sorry man, my bad." And so here I am on youtube, trying to learn why that is, by learning Ottoman history with my daughter. I love the internet.

Both Japanese and Turks were under threat from Western imperialism but Japan was able to modernize and turn the tide against the aggressors. This transformation is just what Turkey has always tried to do. It's astonishing to us as we have struggled to do the same but didn't go quite as well as Japan did. We also feel a kind of kinship also from how the Ottoman frigate Ertugrul's crew was saved by Japanese villagers after it sunk in a storm after a visit to Japan. I'd recommend watching the movie Kainan 1890 which was a joint production by both countries which detail the event. Greetings from Turkey, be safe!

The 4 most important factors in the rapid expansion of the Ottoman Empire: 1. The Ottomans employed steppe war tactics that Europeans were not familiar with. And the Ottomans made good use of gunpowder, cannons and hand cannons that the Mongols learned from China and brought to the Middle East. A century later, Europe developed the arquebus and the Ottomans adapted this new technology to their armies and developed this type of weapon further. 2. Because the war with Christians was religiously appreciated by the Turkish people in Anatolia, the Turkish people migrated from other Beyliks in Anatolia and joined the Ottoman army. 3. The Ottomans were in a region far from Mongol oppression. For this reason, Turkish tribes migrated to the Ottoman lands. Thus, the Ottoman Empire could settle this Turkish population in the new lands it conquered. 4. The Ottoman tolerance of the Christian civilian population and did not press for forced conversion, which protected the Ottomans from great Christian revolts even during the Ottoman weakness, such as the struggle for the throne

This series was fantastic! Thanks so much for shedding some light on a historical topic that does not get a lot of attention in the western world. Just some food for thought -- I would argue that this is not the "first" episode in the series. I am a novice at Ottoman history but this episode would make it seem that the Turks have always lived in this part of the world and Osman was just the first to finally start the expansion. Have you thought about doing an episode for the 100 years before this episode showing how the Byzantines controlled Anatolian, to be conquered by the Seljuk Sultanate/Sultanate of Rum (which is another slice of history I am not clear on and would be awesome if you did a series about) which then led to the Turks eventually fleeing from Central Asia in to Anatolia from the Mongols. Was reading on Wiki about how his father Ertugrul was a Seljuk general and first granted lands around Sogut where Osman would later launch his expansion campaigns from.

MISTAKE: Serbia was in the short vassal state at that point but not controlled or conquered by the Ottomans neither with the Ottoman forces after the battle of Kosovo (exceptions were small supporting Ottoman garnisons to the Serbian local lords in couple of battles against Hungarians and between themselves on the Serbian territory). After the battle of Kosovo, in exchange for the Ottomans recognition, Serbs were obligated to go into battles together with the Ottomans on their side like the battle of Ankara where a Serbian ruler Stefan Lazarević showed amazing heroism which even impressed victorious Amir Timur who granted to all captured Serbian knights full freedom together with gifts and due to respect for Stefan he returned him back his sister Olivera (which was after Kosovo battle given like a vassal wife to Bayezid in exchange for Stefan ruling recognition). After the battle of Ankara, Serbia was totally free from vassal obligations to the Ottomans and Stefan even made alliance with Hungarians where he rebuild then destroyed Belgrade making it one of the most important market medieval hubs. Serbian despotate case to exist after Ottomans captured fort of Smederevo in 1459.

Velikom zaslugom i Stefana Lazarevica. Cak i tada su mislili da su Osmanlije lak zalogaj. Da je Dusan poslusan a Evropa ujedinjena u krstaskom ratu tada, pregazili bi Osmanlije sve do Egipta.

A very nice itinerary though the first stages of the Ottoman Empire. Congratulations! Just one important detail: The first Battle of Kosovo (1389). Despite all the folklore and the legend involving this clash, pointing it out as an absolute defeat of the Serbians and the subsequent conquer of their territory, it was a stalemate at the best. Documentation on this battle is quite scarce. Besides, the total incorporation of Serbia into the Ottoman Empire were achieved in 1459 with the seizure of Smederevo. An excellent analysis of this episode can be found in Noel Malcolm's book, "Kosovo: A Short History". Thanks.

Basically when your Mercs turn against you due to pay.

It is incorrect. Ottomans took Balkan cities mostly by force or surrendering but surrendering side never was Turk because Byzantines didn't have armies consisted of mostly Turks. @Hugh Mungus And the Ottomans left the great fortified cities of Europe only after the Europeans suffered heavy losses.. In Kosovo, the losses of the Orthodox coalition were 10 times greater than the Ottomans, and the Sultan was treacherously killed by a Serbian nobleman ..my source " osmanlı devleti tarihi" yılmaz öztuna

Some of the sources vastly exaggerate the numbers (though some modern sources decrease them too much). The official numbers say that both armies at Nicopol had tens of thousands, not hundreds of thousands. It is impossible the crusaders to suffer more losses, than the size of their entire army! :-) As for Murad - He himself might have been undefeated in battle, but one of his commanders lost the battle of Plochnik. After the battle of Chernomen the Ottomans were seen as some great warriors and the Christian soldiers were afraid of them even before the start of any of the next battles, which helped the Ottomans to conquer a vast territory. But at the battle of Plochnik the Ottomans faced a bigger Serbian army and the world saw, how "great" the Ottoman warriors are - just thieves who lack discipline. They were no better than their rivals - just had more armies.

@Mysterious Stranger Vienna would have fallen easily, but the betrayal of the Crimean commander Murad Giray, who left the bridge on 9/11/1683 and returned to Crimea without a fight ... helped the Crusaders to break the siege

@Mysterious Stranger The campaign of 1529 [10\5 -16-12-1529] was not to take Vienna but was aimed at confronting the main Habsburg army in a field battle and destroying it as the Main Hungarian army of 200,000 was destroyed in Mohaj..but the Germans fled and feared the confrontation, The Vienna siege of 1529 lasted 19 days, and the Ottomans left most of their heavy cannons in Buda. The goal of the siege was to provoke the Germans and force them to a decisive battle. but they were able also during this campaign to find a small German army of 20,000 led by General von zedlitz in Burek [15km south of vienna] and It was annihilated and they back with 100000 jasyr and raiding the Habsuburg territory and recapture Buda 3\9\1529

Any chance you're going to explore the Ottoman Grand Viziers? Quite a plethora of different ethnicities and nationalities during the ages. In some periods it seems they were more often non-Turkish than Turkish. Lots of Serbs, Albanians, Greek, Hungarians, Bosnians, Croats, Armenian, Italians, Chechen, Georgian, Circassian, Abazin, Arab and Russian. I was surprised to see there's very little done about them. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Ottoman_Grand_Viziers

@Mysterious Stranger From my humble point of view, if you decide to make a historical video about any empire or country, or nation etc., you should at least try to pronounce the names of rulers or toponyms correctly (nowadays, you have all means to find out). Otherwise, it shows a superficial attitude towards the topic. And I guess you would be also disturbed if someone mispronounce the names of the rules of country/empire you sympathize with)

Pl read this history ; "The Ottamans set such a good example as pacific conquerors that they won the confidence of many former Byzantine subjects . For example , when Nicaea fell , Orhan allowed all who wanted to leave the city to depart freely , taking with them their holy relics , but few availed themselves of the chance . No reprisals were taken against those who had resisted , and the city was left to manage its internal affairs under its own municipal government . BOOK : Encyclopaedia of the Ottoman Empire . Okay, gonna note two things that irked me in first 5 minutes. The name Çandarlı reads like Chandarli. That ç is not c in English. And Janisseries were formed in era of Murad I when they started to have too many war prisoners and the idea was to use them effectively. The army was mostly tribal horse archers back then. And they were definetly not that significant. Because of their individual prowess and how unique they're, Europeans massively overrate their effect in Ottoman army that was about %80 turkish cavalry and just about 4000 or 5000 Janisseries in the early period
