Wasn't FULL DOCUMENTARY. About Gjergj Kastrioti (Skenderbe), who had the same childhood story like Vlad Tepes (Dracula). He turned back in Arberi and ruled as a leader for 25 years and never loosed a battle against Ottomans. One short time you put him in the video.

But with this logic, the Greeks will also want to claim land by saying that the western Anatolia belonged to them thousands of years ago. what happened, the Greeks reclaimed enough land, the Turks protected enough land. maybe they can try to bond with each other with small gestures to solve geopolitical problems. The problem is that they both consider giving little land a matter of honor. this is very old-fashioned and meaningless stubbornness. Both sides are the same in behavioral and cultural matters. Despite their different colors, both sides have the same mindset in terms of both belief and social aspects. Those who do not accept this do not realize that they do not accept it because they are the same. i believe greek and turk allience might shape the next modern century for whole europe and middle east. but they both need suppress the radicals within their country first. do i know how? no, thats the job of the politicians.

My great grandma was 17 years old when the Ottoman Empire was dissolved. I've met her, she died in 2009. It's amazing, it was founded in 1299 and is almost still in living memory!

Plenty of examples of Courage leading to huge defeat and death and a few where cowardice has lead to out right victory. Better stratagy, weapons, training and a bigger better equipped army is definitely a better option for victory every time than courage. Boringly good planners, military leaders who are good at employing the right people in the right places to keep their armies well supplied and led by great tactical Generals are the rulers who really win wars and create the biggest empires. The further back you go the more influence and effect having a brave leader had on the out come of a battle and it definitely helped but its far from the only thing or the most important thing for a great leader needs to be a conqueror. Just take Augustus, he was a very average general and not particularly brave, once leaving the sight of a battle before it started and leaving it to his main General Agrippa to lead the battle and all his battles from then on. It was the one thing that Romans disliked about him and most of his propaganda was trying to make up for this perceived lack. However he was a truly great leader, Emperor and Politician and especially good at the boring stuff of feeding the masses and putting the best people in the right places.

I always wanted to learn about the Ottoman Empire, and this documentary did it perfectly for me to just jot down notes and spread out my research to other aspects. I hope there will be many more documentaries like possibly on the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth on how it begun and to the downfall like this would be amazing! but also i want to say keep up the great work. The descendants of the Turkish Cypriots living on the island today (except for those who came from the Republic of Turkey after the Cyprus Operation) come from the Turks who were sent to the island under Ottoman rule. When Mehmed II called his father back to the throne his father refused. Although he was a child Mehmed II wrote his father a letter saying. " If you are the sultan come and take the throne, if I am the sultan than I order you to come and take the throne". Murad wanted to spend time in spirutual matters and become secluded but after his sons clever lettee he had no choice to take the throne.

The idea of recalling the retired Sultan Murad to the throne came not from Mehmed II, who was still a young lad, but from his old and wise Sadr- Azam Çandarlı Halil Paşa. As is well known, Mehmet II had Çandarlı Halil executed following the capture of Constantinople, primarily as a result of rumors spread by his rivals alleging that he took bribes from Byzantium to dissuade the Sultan from invading the city. According to many historians, another reason for Mehmet's rage was the letter delivered to the retired Sultan at Çandarlı's behest. Appearently, the boy Sultan had been deeply offended by this intervention to his authority.

Ottoman Empire advanced her infrustructure, architecture, skills and numbers of artists, scholars immensely when Bayezid II was the ruler. Many criticize him for his passive policies but in fact, people were very tired of wars. There was non-stop expansion and wars in Mehmed II's reign. Although Mehmed II was the conquerer of these lands, it was Bayezid II who transformed the conquered lands to a part of homeland. Bayezid II was the one who prepared the intellectual ground of the world's strongest empire in 16th century. Think it like a machine: Mehmed II used this machine to it's full might for a long period of time. But the machine needs to cool off to stay undamaged and keep working for a much longer period. Bayezid II stopped the machine, modified and updated it to work much stronger and much longer with much more stability and delivered the machine to Selim I.

Suleiman was not a very good leader. He was already at the height of Ottoman power when his father, Selim I, left the country to him. It was very easy to do this when he already had so many opportunities. He also killed his own son, Şehzade Mustafa. Şehzade Mustafa was a very intelligent, knowledgeable boy with a great military genius. If he had not killed him, the Ottoman Empire would probably have moved much further. Also, for the first time in history, a Turk did not rule the Ottoman Empire because of Suleiman. I'm talking about Selim 2. He is the son of a Ukrainian woman. By the way, where are you from?

Maybe if he would reign more than 8 years he would take all Persia and east europe (italia, austria and so one), but the territories of the ottomans was to big to go further out. Everytime when the Ottomans started to take areas of Germany. The germans took that areas back when the army Is going back to the capital. That was common. In the time of Suleiman Khan, no army goes in a open battlefield with them. Thats why his soliders could go into cities like Stuttgart. In those times the ottomans got taxes from nearly all european countries. It was not difficult to take more areas. It was difficult to stay in that areas. So if they go the europe the persians started to attack them. If they attack persia european contries attack them. Thats the reason why they couldnt conquer more areas without loosing some. Even Suleiman Khan said that he reached the final borders of the ottomans. More than that could lead to dangers.

Yup. Khan was the title used. Even after the Ottomans started using Sultan they also used Khan. Looking at the title of Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent / Law giver at the height of the empire the guys title is longer than most books lol. Generally they were referred to as Sultan "name" Han (Khan) Hazretleri (his holiness/majesty). Full title included Khan of Khans. But also included titles such as Emperor / Ceasar and protector of the two holy cities / mosques etc etc The people used Sultan / Padişah (from Persian) / Han and Hünkar etc

Well the Sieg of Plevne was probably the most important battle in the Russo-Turkish war that at the same time was the independence war for many balkan countries. After 2 failed attacks the russians asked Romania for help and the King send a romanian army and took control over the romanian-russian contingent, starting a Sieg around Plevna cuting it from food, ammunition etc. An failed attempt of breaking the Sieg failed and the ottoman general Osman Pasha was wounded. Finally he surrended with his troops to the romanian general commander of the troops in Plevna, Mihail cherchez to whom Osman Pasha handed his sword and declared himself prisoner of war.

Though the Ottoman Empire was far from perfect, its demise has in some ways been a disaster for the Middle East. All kinds of ethnic and religious hatreds that had been kept under control by the Ottomans ignited in the decades following its collapse (many parts of the Middle East had more ethnic/religious diversity prior to the Ottoman collapse). And the end of the last Muslim caliphate, together with the Wahhabi takeover of Mecca and Medina, paved the way for the Saudis to promote a more intolerant and puritanical brand of Islam.
