Voldemort once boasted to Albus Dumbledore that he had pushed the boundaries of magic further than any before him, and from his almost unrecognisable appearance, Dumbledore didn’t doubt him. However, how exactly did Tom Riddle push the boundaries of magic? And no I don’t just mean Horcruxes, there is a lot of other things he did that nobody before him had done and in todays video thats exactly what I’m going to be looking at. I’m not only going to be talking about what he did, but how and why he was able to achieve a power that nobody else could.

Fanboy theory: The Gaunt lineage, while powerful, was rendered moribund by the same inbreeding that protected their Parseltongue talent. Ironically, it was the fresh blood in Tom - Muggle though it was - that awoke the full potential in him. It shook loose his genetics and instead of somehow being lesser for being Half-Blood, it supercharged him by bypassing all the recessive genes the family had picked up through their practice of marrying within the line, while keeping all that talent and power.

Stuff like the spell to create Inferi, flight without the use of brooms, Hippogriffs or Threstals, the creation of the Drink of Despair to defend his locket Horcrux and whatever he used to brand his followers with the Dark Mark are all ways Voldemort pushed dark magic further than just making multiple Horcruxes.

I think even if Voldemort won in the end, his thirst for magical power and knowledge would never be satisfied. If he won i think he would become Lich-king like figure, he would figure out how to drain souls from others and consume them etc.Essentialy at that point he would be unstoppable even by muggle weaponry. Every dead person would be new soldier for him+him consuming souls/magic would make him planetary threat basicaly. Stopping this theoretical version of Voldemort would require Divine intervention basicaly. I mean there is some higher being in HP universe as Afterlife is a real place. Maybe not God, but some other benevolent entity, like collective of ancient witches/wizzards etc.

Grindelwald use magic to be a leader. Voldemort believe magic is might. When someone too focus on dark magic, they become less human and forget how to be one. Voldemort is just a slave of magic (not master of it). He could be powerful but too predictable - at least to Dumbledore.

Why doesn't Dumbledore just sever his cursed arm? If the curse is confined to his hand, then simply removing his hand should cut the curse from his flesh. He can then use magic to create a new hand, make a prosthesis, or regrow a new hand.

vonkäuen Theforbidden I always took it as, the curse had already affected Dumbledore, he was bound to die; but only his hand had suffered the consequences so far. They were able to confine the effects of the spell to his hand and stop the spell there but, cutting off his hand apparently wouldn’t stop the fact that Dumbledore HAD been cursed, not just his hand.

From what I understand the potion used to get his body back was designed by him. Its amazing that it worked the first time without prior testing (which would be close to impossible due to the special circumstances required). Also the dark mark that allowed him to summon his followers was a new enchantment too from what I understood. I want to know other specifics of what he did to push boundaries other than creating horcrux (spelling?). Like Snape created the spell that cut you up. I would venture to say that would become an unforgivable curse if it became widely known. I'm sure Voldemort created similar things.

@Harry Potter Folklore, I see you mentioned how Tom is so powerful being descendant of a hogwarts founder or possibly from 2nd brother from tale of 3 brothers, despite being half blood. And his mom and grand parents being weak wizards due to lack of motivation. But I saw another theory, which is valid in real life. That being pure blood is bad. You are restricting your gene pool and sometimes inbreeding, which propagates defective genes. While when you diverse gene pool your bad genes get suppressed and gradually get eliminated. So marrying Tom riddle would have suppressed some bad genes from Voldy's mom, helping the powerful magical genes from Slytherin shine. Also there was suppressing magic and being almost obscurial theory of Voldy's mom, and passing all the suppressed power to Voldy during birth and dying.

I listened to this scene on the HP&THBP audiobook yesterday. And today the scene when Harry and Dumbledore view Slughorn's untampered memory. There is definitely the impression that Riddle's use of multiple horcruxes was a remarkable iteration and progression of one of the most powerful and dark magics in existance. And as you say his necromancy abilities were quite astounding. And if it's true that no other necromancer had managed such a feat then it's gotta be considered an advance I think Voldemort would likely delve deeper into methods of muggle control if he had won. Perhaps he would invent new slavery magic or methods of mass people herding. He might look into magic to make new prisons or camps impenetrable. Who knows. But he was the worst. And he would only have gotten worse and worse

Tom was powerful, and early on he was inventive. He had possibly created a curse (as had Snape), he may have created a potion (as had many before him), he had created a horcrux (but hardly the first one to do so). Tom had done a few extraordinary things, but I would hardly place him in the same league with Grindelwald. Tom feared death and all his thoughts were bent on defeating it. Tom had raw power but so did Dumbledore and Grendelwald; what Tom lacked was subtlety, and understanding of other people. Tom was blinded by his own raw ability and bought into his own hype, he also only displayed courage when he had his horcruxes backing him up. The only real thing Tom had going for him was an over willingness to kill. With all that I say that Dumbledore, Grindelwald, and Severus were greater than Voldemort ever was.
@Lav8514
@Lav8514 4 жыл бұрын
As a pure Dark wizard and doing things which cannot be done without having fear, Tom obliterated everyone in the field. Horcruxes are just not done by killing here and transferring your soul there. many have failed to do so. Creating an army of inferri is not imaginable but he did. That is why he is the greatest "Dark Magic" wizard of all time. I consider Grindelwald to be nowhere near him when it comes to the full potential of dark magic, but Grindelwald is the "GREATEST VILLAIN" of all times. He "convinced" people to join him which is 100 times more evil than just manipulating or using the imperius curse. His vision was global, Voldemort was local. He was able to put Dumbledore in a situation where he could not fight him as him being his greatest enemy. And that is why Dumbledore took so long to have that great duel. Voldemort considered himself and had no such thing as an opponent. He never understood Harry, Harry was an average wizard but he had potential. Potentital which his wand understood but something that he did not crave for. That is why Harry's wand is more powerful than Voldemort's and can be equal or near to Dumbledore's original wand and Salazar Slytherin's wand (which was made out of a basilisk core). So this is how it goes: Grindelwald- Greatest villain of all time Voldemort- Greatest Dark wizard of all time Dumbledore- Greatest and most powerful wizard of all time Harry Potter- The only one to ever become the "Master of Death".

This seems like a popular contrarian point these days, as is saying that Snape is in the same league as Voldemort. Utter nonsense. If you're going to say that not only is Grindelwald more powerful but that Voldemort isn't even in his league, you'd better cough up some evidence or strong theories as to why that is. Voldemort wasn't the wisest wizard but he had pushed the boundaries of magic further than anyone had ever done before, even Dumbledore acknowledged that. Grindelwald would annihilate Lord Voldemort? Are you sure?

I thought that before he returned to Hogwarts while he was traveling, he learned every form of magic in the area and wasn't there simply to look at the sights like everyone on vacation. He was after power and when he was done, was cleaver and creative to invent new spells and potions. He favored Dark Arts most of all cause of his sadistic nature. In MovieFlame of prophecy says that he brought imbalance of power, having it ALL to himself and only shared little to his followers. So "the universe" created his opposite to counter and restore the balance. My theory is if he shared it all with everyone and was a decent person, then Harry Potter would still exist but not a chosen one. And if Voldemort also had powerful Mysticism aka Whit Magic, then Harry would have to learn both Dark and Light to still counter him.

Voltomort, being nigh immortal would literally have all the time in the world to study and master every form of the dark arts. He would have explored and experiment in it too. He would greedy in his knowledge and keep them a secret. He may choose to adopt an apprentice to be his right hand man but made sure that he never surpassed him in power (think the rule of two with the Sith in Starwars). He would do the same thing to his inner circle and to everyone else.

Just 1 thing regarding the unsupported flight, Snape did exactly this to escape the castle when Harry returned to look for the Diadem. So not only did Voldemort figure out how to do it himself he was obviously able to teach others how to do it too. he may have been the most evil creature to ever have existed, but I genuinely believe that if he hadn't have gone down the path that he did he could have been the greatest teacher Hogwarts would ever have had, greater than even Dumbledore.

With Dumbledore and Harry out of the way he would have absorbed everything he could from the Ministry's department of secrets and pushed them farther. The study of time magic, to stop others from using it against him as well as speeding up his own research because even though he is immortal, time is still time so why not make everything go faster. Another would be the brains, in understanding how to control a person far more then the use of a certain unforgivable spell. If Voldemort survived, I imagine he would have created new Horcruxes, or found a new means of immortality. I also imagine he might have tried to enchant himself in such a way that he no longer needed a wand. Wands are a limiting factor for wizards, and are one of the things that did prevent him from killing Harry. Wandless magic is certainly powerful on its own, but most wizards are still dependent on their wand. If Voldemort was able to free himself from that dependency, to wield magic at the same level and with the same control without a wand, he'd be invincible.

In my opinion, Voldemort was experimenting less after his return. He was witty and clever in his youth and had to achieve lots of magical feats to assert power. When he returned, he just relied on his sheer power and domination as a figurehead, and focused more on controlling people. If you think about it, the only thing magically he really achieved after returning was his return. Creating the modified body potion or whatever was a big achievement for him and he pulled it off. From what we read and saw, all he ever really cast was the killing curse. He didn't seem very clever with his magic, but I'm up for someone to debate that with.

I still don't get how people can say Voldemort was the #1 darkest Wizard. I'm sorry if this pisses off some but Voldemort only went after the British M.O.M. and no other countries version there of. Grindlewald on the other hand created a true Wizarding world war and was hunted not only by the British M.O.M. but many others like M.A.C.U.S.A. throughout his reign of terror. With whole countries of Witched and Wizards fearing him and his army of followers, which outnumbered Voldemort's followers many of hundreds of times. Yes Voldemort had gone deeper into the dark arts then Grindlewald and may have been slightly stronger in dueling as well, but I don't see the whole world fearing Voldemort as they did for Grindlewald. Now if Voldemort would've went after other countries centers of Magical power instead of only going after the British M.O.M. I would agree the Voldemort deserves being the #1 most dark Wizard of all time, but he didn't and as such should be only #2 and Grindlewald should still hold #1. This is just my opinion though and you all are more then welcome to agree or disagree with me on this in the comments below.

Voldemort "is" the most powerful dark wizard of all time because of his magical feats. What you're looking at is Grindlewald having a bigger influence than Voldemort but that doesn't make Grindlewald the # 1 dark wizard. As the video pointed, Voldemort did feats with his own magical power that Grindlewald could never do. For example, he lost to Dumbledore despite having the Elder wand while Dumbledore admitted he couldn't match Voldemort if he didn't have the Elder wand.

So Tom Riddle did the same but he realized it was him so he embraced it and didn’t push it off as a coincidence. Well considering we now know that most of the magical world planet wide prefer to use wandless magic and every student that goes to Uagadou school of magic (the last magical school in the world) graduates as a master of Wandless magic. So while Voldemort as a young boy was certainly impressive it would only be impressive by the standards of Witches/Wizards of Magical Europe and America, since wands are only really popular their. Even Harry also preformed pretty impressive accidental magic as a child (accidental and safe Apparition as a child), but he unlike Voldemort did not try to explore his abilities because of the punishment of the Dursley's he feared exploring any if his "freakishness". But then again Harry was also special from the day he was born with powerful bloodline from his father side and even his mother was very powerful, talented and extremely intelligent. As for for no one replicating his army of Inferi I'm pretty sure some attacked a Quidditch cup with an army of inferi in the 2000s. And yes if he did survive he most certainly would have continued magical experimentations.

This is such a good topic because I feel like I always am asking "What makes a wizard a "powerful" wizard in this universe as opposed to just an average wizard. Why does someone like, say, Ron Weasly, seem like he inherently sucks whereas someone like Voldomort or Belletrix or whatever seem inherently powerful. Almost like their mediclorian count is higher lmao. Obviously Voldomort is powerful because he does shit that nobody else has taught themselves to do, but it also just seems like it's something beyond skill and more like raw power. For instance Sirius was a talented wizard and dueliest, but lost to Belletrix. Which is also just the plot so maybe I'm reading too much into it. Also how powerful is Snape? He seems like a boss. I guess what I'm getting at is: is it skill/knowledge? Or innate ability, or both combined?
