So I bought this pink hydrangea and I REALLY want it to STAY pink! So we're going to test the soil to see what color it will turn. We'll also answer a handful of questions that we forgot in our recent "Do we still like!?!" video.
Soil Testing Kit: amzn.to/3bM5qgR
Hedge Trimmer: amzn.to/3nuiM3K (I got this one because Tom has Milwaukee battery packs, I wouldn't need such a heavy duty one!)

When trimming your bushes, if you put old large flat sheets down on the ground to catch the trimmings from your bushes, makes for an easy clean up.

Dawn & anyone interested in *Pink Hydrangeas:* if your soil tends to be more acidic (as does mine in western Oregon) after you plant it just add 1 cup of Baking Soda to the top, work it in a little and then water well. I had purple Hydrangeas for a year or two, and now they're as pink as the one Dawn has, and I only *added the Baking Soda on top once per year (spring) for 3 years.* I have had them 12 years in the same spot. Thats it.

I have been buying a large bag of cheap, very generic “wild bird seed.” 😂 (Our birds were way too impressed with what we used to buy and gorged on that stuff!!). Now we have a flip-top tote and in there, I mix the cheapo seed with a small bag of the premo stuff. The birds are still here - no complaints!

You're thinking it might be a boring video but I've been trying to get motivated to get outside to clean up my back patio for about 2 hours now. So happy to see your video!! Not only do I love watching your family work together, It really motivated me to get outside now. 😊 I've had one of those bright pink hydrangeas for several years and the way it stays pink is I feed it miracle grow for acid loving plants. Glad you got the hedger yes it's a great workout for the arms. 😉 I love how yours is battery operated though, mine is corded. I also got into feeding the birds around your age. 😉 And bought a bird watching book so me and my kids could look up the different birds. However we did get a lot of strange plants growing underneath the bird feeder after a while. 😂 I have since switched to hummingbird feeders and absolutely love watching them.😍 Plus I think it's a lot less expensive since all I need is sugar and water to make their food. May the Lord continue to bless your family and the other kids He brings to you. 🙏

@@TheMinimalMom maybe get a double shepherd's hook slightly taller than the one you have. Not sure if they would both do well next to each other or not but it might be worth a try. Yes see that don't get eaten by the birds they come plants underneath the bird feeder sometimes. 😀

@@TheMinimalMom Dawn, just wanted to let you know, if you didn't already, that they have hummingbird feeders that suction-cup to your windows. That way you can see them really up close! (Highly recommend the "Aspects" brand, plus they are easy to clean!) I have one on my kitchen window, as well as two of the regular hanging types out in my yard. It takes them a bit longer to get used to seeing you through the window, but they will! My husband hung a bird feeder up for me years ago and I totally got hooked! I bought a bird identification book (Stokes) and refer to it all the time. A few years ago I started writing on my calendar different bird events...for example, when we see the first of a species show up for the year; when the Bluebirds and others make their nest and where; when the eggs hatch; when the babies fledge; and yes, when tragedy strikes them too. It's amazing how they come back each year exactly, or almost exactly on the same day as the year before. I keep my calendars so I know when to put out certain foods for birds like orioles and hummingbirds, and it's also just neat to compare the years and look back and remember. It is an expensive hobby if you really get into it, but we don't have children, so we spoil the birds instead! They say sunflower seed will keep going up because Ukraine is THE major exporter of it. We are trying to grow some of our own this year. Looks like you had a Rose-breasted Grosbeak on your new feeder! The females are funny... they don't put up with any bird trying to bully them off the feeder! Lol! If you ever have bird questions, I probably have an answer, and I'm sure others can help you too! Good luck, and I hope you get as much enjoyment as I have over the years... I could watch my birds for hours. Like most things in nature, they are so peace-inducing. 😍

YES, to Jenny, about the old sheets laid down to catch and hold the trimmings! No need to spend more money on a blower. And it's a great way to recycle old 'useless' sheets. @Dawn: you totally rocked the hydrangea planting. 👍 You followed directions. Resisting the urge to "just in case" use the sulphur. 🙂👍 I work at a garden center as a garden advisor. It's astounding how many people compromise their plants by not following given directions. 🤪

In my limited experience, Hydrangeas are very hardy. My friend was given one in a small pot ( 4-6 inches) when she was dying of breast cancer. She wanted me to throw it out because it had not been watered and was nearly dead. I said I would take it home and plant it and give it a chance. That was pre- Covid, and the bush (in major shade with very partial sun, is now about 2-3 feet around and beautiful! Just make sure it gets some water and don't prune it. You will really enjoy it. It may like a little fertilizer. You may also enjoy a hummingbird feeder. They are very territorial and fuss at you if you forget to fill the feeder .

Hope in your disagreements off camera that you still always kiss and make up! Ou guys sure do make a Great team! I love all your tips and how you video it as you go even with the unplanned things like opening the No with us rather than filming with it already opened. I like getting your reactions like when you saw how big that machine was that trans the edges. Lol see I don’t even know the professional name of what you call it the trim hedger I don’t know lol anyways we watch you from Alabama when I can get free time. When I want to be motivated or I just can’t seem to start decluttering my house or I get discouraged or frustrated I find myself grabbing the remote pulling up one of your videos on my big screen and listening to you tell me how you did stuff lol we are definitely not minimalists but I do wish me and my kids were little all five of them at home that I would have had something like this to help guide me. I had an amazing mom that taught me lots of things that we have a tendency from the past of just hanging onto everything. We did not grow up with a lot of stuff so we were constantly having to make do with what we had and saving it for a rainy day. Because the rainy days did come when I was growing up. I know times have changed and it’s not like that now but I don’t want my kids not to know how to survive or how to make do. I feel like your videos show us all how to do that. Thanks so much … and NO I thought this video was very informative and interesting I like that you gave different updates on different things in one video! Hope you guys have a blessed day keep JESUS first always!

You did everything right to keep the garden hydrangea pink! Adding metal ions and acid is what makes it turn blue, so keeping the soil alkaline is great ( if your soil is rich in metal it will turn blue eventually, but a very vibrant blue because you pink is vibrant too). I have never used anti weed cloth under mulch, since the mulch does the protection and breaks down in 2 years time. But we have very different garden techniques here in the Netherlands. our soil and weather are probably quite different 😊. The white Annabelle hydrangea in my garden also loves sun, but I think water is even more important to make yours a bit more lush. In a few years time it will triple in width and you can cut parts off to plant in other parts of the garden. Oh, just another tip: some leaf blowers also have a reverse with a collector net. I got one from the thrift store. It works like a garden vacuum cleaner! The soil falls through the netting and the leafs and other stuff can be shaken out at the compost bin. no raking needed... also great for cleaning paths with gravel.

I had just arrived in Lake Ohrid Macedonia and was in awe of the Hydrangeas that seem to be growing everywhere when I watched this video. Neat coincidence! They must have the right soil here because the plants are so full with pink blooms.

I love these kind of videos. This is just real life. I really like your trimmers. I had a set of trimmers and accidentally cut the cord while trimming some of our bushes. Now they are really cordless trimmers! Lol. I need to buy a new set that are supposed to be cordless from the beginning! Your flowers are all so beautiful. You have a gorgeous place.

Not a boring video. I'm not a regular watcher because, well, time management. That said, I knew very little of what you talked about in this video. I hear you on the game changer of the hedge trimmer. I use an electric one and as much as I don't enjoy lugging it out along with the extension cord, it IS a game changer for getting the job done. I LOVE THAT!!

Good to see you both again and glad you are taking the summer to do what ever needs doing or whatever you please 🙂. Check on the feeding and watering needs of your hydrangea online. Lots of great gardening tutorials online for every plant! Plants need food to blossom and regular watering-set up a schedule on your phone. And now that you have seen how GREAT your new tool is, do use a tarp to catch the trimmings and carry them to your disposal site as someone else suggested. May I also say keep your tool in a safe and dry area with the battery far from where the kids might get at it. Someone might think they would be doing you both a favor by ‘helping out’ and trying to trim possibly losing fingers, toes, or limbs. 😉Your family always in my prayers!

Love your videos and life updates. Something else fun to watch is hummingbirds, if you have them in your area. So easy to feed. 1 cup water 1/4 cup white sugar. Mix and put in hummingbird feeder that is red with yellow flowers. If you can put up two or more feeders it is better. Change sugar water often especially when extra hot.

Even better, get flowering plants plants that they feed off of. Then you won’t have to worry about killing hummingbirds. As a bonus the mimosas smell absolutely wonderful & mine stay full of hummingbirds, which are great for videos. My Turkish caps were taken from the wild 20 yrs ago, & are starting to get out of hand, but great for still shots. The Esperanzas don’t seem to have any smell, but they are joy practically year round, here in the south.

Dawn, I have a tall bird pole that can hold up to 8 bird feeders. Cardinals, Blue Jay's, Woodpeckers, Yellow Canaries and many more varieties. I just had back surgery Monday and I can sit and watch them from my chair. I love it. I enjoy your videos!

These videos are so fun! I love that you got a bird feeder. I noticed a grosbeak in one of the shots! So cool! I love my bird feeders… they can be messy, but so fun to see all the different birds! I buy birdseed at Job lots or Tractor Supply.., seems to be a bit more economical. You two do such great work with all your projects! Love the hydrangea also! Love and blessings! 🙏🏻💕💕💕

I would recommend filling the plant hole with the native soil, not potting soil. Potting soil has no nutrients, and not meant for plants in the ground. I also don’t recommend weed barrier. It prevents the decomposing mulch from feeding the soil. If you have a bad weed problem, I recommend layers of newspaper or cardboard, which will also breakdown and feed the soil. And it’s a great way to use all those Amazon boxes!

I run a garden service in CA you can put blue tarps around each bush as you trim to catch the clippings. Also BE VERY CAREFUL not to "tag" your leg as you're using that thing , those blades can cut through your pants in no time and give you a nasty cut.

You will love your bird feeder. Here in Virginia, our birds love the black oil sun flower seeds. We have small, medium, and large birds of all kinds enjoy it. The best places to get the seed here is Tractor Supply, Walmart, or Rural King. We get the 25 # bags and share with my mom. That size bags are the best deal. You may even get a squirrel or wood pecker that show up too! Check the amount it holds each time and find you some old nut jars or some type that hold the exact amount. We fill them from the big bags and then just have to grab one and fill it up. May be a good "chore" for the kids to fill every some many days.

Great video. Yes my daughter and I just used a similar trimmer of my husband's yesterday. I am so intimated by yard tools but we figured it out and WOW, it really made a quick job out of a long tedious manual job. We felt so proud of ourselves for overcoming a mental hurdle. Now I want my own tool!

I have really hard rocky soil. I don't even try using a shovel to dig a hole. I use a hoe and a gardening fork(kinda like a small pitch fork except the tines are sturdier). The gardening fork is for lifting rock out of the way. The hoe is what I actually dig with. I've been on my property for 32 years...works for me! I'm so glad that you had the right soil for your beautiful Hydrangea. 🙂🌺
