Incredible video Dawn!! I’m an empty nester whose husband developed early onset Parkinson’s Disease. Not at all the retired lifestyle we thought we would have. It is crucial to simplify our home to accommodate a scooter chair, wheelchair, special recliner, etc. He needs to be able to easily open cabinets and get the things he needs which translates into less stuff in the cabinets. Your encouraging words and personal example help me so much in downsizing our stuff. ❤️

For me there's a vast difference in time and energy between having kids under 5, and school aged kids. I have a significant gap between kids and so I restarted the "littles" stage. I think people forget how busy it is to keep eyes on a toddler constantly while he or she is awake. I'm only saying this because I can't imagine if I had postpartum depression with my first and people told me "you never have more time". Yes, declutter. Yes, streamline. But parenting comes in phases and having babies, toddlers, and preschoolers are more physically demanding. I know this is just a stage again, so I'm getting all the snuggles I can. To the parents of littles, this time goes by quick. Prioritize now, but know it won't always be like this and you will, in fact, sleep again.

Thank you for saying this! My kids are 3&4 and I feel I barely have a minute without being called to help them in some way. Glad to hear it may get better (time wise)

I completely agree! My kids are 7 and 5 and the difference from just 2 years ago is HUGE. I DO have more time, and more energy to devote to other things. When we go to the park I can sit and talk with people instead of following a toddler 100% of the time so she doesn't run into the street. At home I can allow them to play in a different room, or even on a different floor from where I am and get things done or do something fun for myself sometimes.
@sarahvincent3645
@sarahvincent3645 Жыл бұрын
Agree. Having littles under 5 is completely different. I think it's not that we have more time when they get old enough to be independent but our priorities just change to adapt to our family's needs and our own changing needs. Family time is more important than stuff. I used to craft. Now I have more important things to do with 4 kids.

Thank you for this! With two children under 5 and a burnout, it sounds very nice to hear that. Although Dawn's underlying message to stop living towards a moment in the future where you supposedly have more time is also something that I learned during my burn out. Something will always come up. You need to simplify your life, not until you can just manage it, but until you can manage it AND have bandwidth to deal with things that come up!

Whew, I'm glad to read this! 🤣 We have an 8 year old, a 1.5 year old, and I'm 2nd trimester pregnant with #3. We homeschool, and I farm full-time, so I know it isn't going to get less "busy" anytime soon, but it is good to hear the reminder that these physically challenging days are not forever.

I decluttered a few years ago using the Mari Kondo method. Worked a treat. What was the ONLY thing that I let go and then regretted later? A wooden spoon! I could really do with having two, instead of one. A 1 euro wooden spoon! Honestly, let go of the stuff. You might regret 1% of your decisions, but, in the meantime, you will live in an environment that is so much more peaceful.

I find it interesting that we hold onto all the things we really don't use and deep down know we probably won't use just because someday we might use them! We are so afraid to make a mistake in our decluttering! Never mind the fact that we made tons of poor choices in buying all the stuff!

Well done Nicola! I cleared slot of stuff before a house move using Marie Kondo's method but there were still certain belongings that needed further decluttering. The "not low-hanging fruit" as mu husband kindly calls them needed some more helps... I leaned on Dana K White and Dawn's wisdom and finally we are fairly well sorted . It took a year or two more as thd new house needed jobs to be done to it so obd is "double-jobbing". I am alot wiser and mire vlesr thinking now, thank God. G Ire

I concur- there is a moment that happens where a hobby becomes a burden, whether it's just moving on to other interests, or realizing you're collecting stuff because a friend is doing it, and it has become "keeping up with the Joneses". I'm slowly coming around to the idea of giving stuff away rather than trying to sell it to assuage the guilt of having spent money on something. Giving to someone who appreciates it "sparks joy"™ for me more than making back a few bucks.

In 1936 my grandma had a string of Christmas lights with eight light bulbs. They put them in the window so everyone could see in their small town of Calumet, OK. They were so proud of them. There were maybe 50 people in the county at that time. My Grandma lives with us now and is 99 years old and still recalls the joy of those very special Christmas lights. Small things mean a lot and we can learn from them as we have the "COSTCO" version of life now. I enjoy your work, Kerri

My grandmother has been gone for 16 years and she kept everything but never had anything. She saved everything for "good". She would tell us that (a new in package picture frame) she was saving g it for "good". Sadly "good" never came for her. She was a few months short of 92. She didn't have alot of stuff but she always kept all of her really nice old dress shoes in original boxes. They are still in her house today. She would keep food in the freezer forever. She wasn't a hoarder and her home was clean. She would save the Styrofoam that meat comes on for us to do crafts with. Of course she washed it. The best days. I sure miss her.

Suzy Homemaker ME would USE all the cleaning supplies and bake all the goodies and try all the recipes and sew all the fabric (because she never sleeps and never gets tired and never gets interrupted and doesn't have to deal with anything but THOSE projects). Creative ME would USE all the art supplies and craft supplies and practice the piano for hours daily for the same reasons. Prepper ME would organize all the supplies and focus solely on being prepared for another great depression. Literate ME would read all the books and write a novel... ugh. I need a small army of droid clones. I cannot focus on the whole elephant - I cannot even focus on a part - that isn't how my brain works. I do utilize your 5 minute doses and float from room to room - improving each room with 5 minutes of intense adrenaline... then it ends. Thank you for not giving up on us/me. My nightstand is organized and cleared off. I have eliminated excess dishes/glasses/mixing bowls. Front room is tidy except for my husband's corner of reading materials. I make progress by tiny baby steps.

Hey Dawn- I love this video. I am 67 and mother of 7 grown children. I actually do feel I have more time than I used to, and I love this stage of life. BUT I find that I don’t necessarily want to go back to the hobbies I used to do before children- sewing clothes, cross-stitching, refinishing furniture. I have other things I want to do now. So there is that reason also for getting rid of stuff. Don’t assume, as I did, that once I had more time I’d go back to my previous pastimes.

Such very good advice!!! Also, even if you do have more time years from now… things don’t last forever. Paint dries up, thread and material dry rot, things just don’t last forever. So if someday you do have time to craft. You’ll need new materials anyway. I was saving a bunch of paint because I genuinely do love to paint and use the paint. But the fact is that a lot of it dried up before I used it. Only keep what you’re using. And be realistic about what you can actually use. If you need more later get it then. One thing that was overwhelming to me when I decluttered my craft supplies was that I had an entire storage building FULL of it. Mostly things people had given me. I thought “I can’t get rid of all this! I could NEVER afford to buy it all again someday.” But the truth is I don’t have to buy it all again, because I don’t NEED it all. I just need enough to do one project. Then when it’s done enough for one more. I would never have enough spare time in my whole life to do enough crafts to use up a whole storage building of supplies. I wouldn’t even WANT to spend that much time on crafts. I want to spend it with my kids, and my husband, and my friends.

I am a professional artist, and work in several media. Each set of media takes up space. But you inspired me today to pull things out, declutter some paper that turned out not to be archival, resort things into better categories and containers, and now it just feels so much more manageable. Artists have a bit of a challenge because of supplies needed for production, and, in my case, teaching also, but simplifying other areas of my life has allowed me more time to make and teach art. And lift folks' spirits thereby, I've been told. :)

So timely. “I didn’t know” that my disabled 24 year old son would continue to need more and more care instead of gain more and more independence. “I didn’t know” that my 82 year old mom would need me to take her to more and more doctor appointments (4 hours round trip plus the appointment!) . “I didn’t know” that when I retired I was going to discover that my back and hips were going to have an abnormally fast degenerative issue that prevents me from doing the things I love. So…… you have kicked me into high gear to rid myself of the stuff I haven’t had time to enjoy and now I see that I won’t get to enjoy in the future! I need to simplify NOW while I CAN…..let someone else use things while they are useful! And realistically keep what I do have time and ability to use. The “ I didn’t know” phrase is going to really help me go through my sewing/craft areas! Great video. Gonna watch this one a few times!

I have more time for sewing now because I MADE more time for sewing. Following you and Diana, I developed a weekly plan for housekeeping, shopping and cooking; but that plan did not include sewing. It did (and does) include one day devoted to cooking along the lines of "Cook Once Eat All Week." It finally dawned on me that if I could have a day devoted to cooking, I also could have a day devoted to sewing. I give the sewing day the same priority I give the cooking day, and rearranged other tasks on the schedule to accommodate it. I've been working on a sewing project for a few weeks now; and tomorrow is sewing day, when I expect to finish my current project. I feel no anxiety or frustration about an unfinished project because I know exactly when I will get to it. I also enjoy savoring my sewing day without guilt because I know exactly when I will get to all my other household tasks. Thanks for all the wonderful ideas, ladies, and happy 40th birthday!

I have been minimizing for 10 years now and feel our home and lives are where we need to be regarding minimalism. Fridays are the day when I am home alone while my kids and spouse are at work and school. I usually spend this time cleaning and minimizing more, then groceries and errands. I now ask myself what I can do to stop the mindset and actions of doing these tasks on my day off and instead be able to use this time for activities I really love, like doing art or going on a hike. Such great & fabulous advice. If you have a collection that is part of a hobby or club, let relatives know what to do about it when you are gone, and put suggestions in your will. In paring down my own things, I often wonder if living minimally gives the expression to others that I am poor, lack, or don’t have “enough”. When in fact it’s just the opposite. Having so many things could make someone appear wealthy and is this how our society views an abundance of things?? We recently moved from the south to Colorado. It took two weeks to get our furniture and boxes. I had taken 9 car loads to the dump and 11 to goodwill. I got on a flight with my 88 yr old mom with only a backpack of what we needed. In those 2 weeks b4 the truck arrived, the only thing I missed was my heavy hoodie and my boots. My mom complained everyday about her Knick knacks, sheets, and stuff she “wanted “. This chaos is brought on by society and a living from lack mindset. Cheers to you for a great channel!!

Something I think about a lot is how many people have worked at each step of production with the items I buy. I love to sew, so I have a lot of fabric. Before I buy fabric, I try to ask if I will honor all the work that went into making it. Someone planted cotton seeds. Farmers tended to the plants. Someone harvested the cotton and spun it into thread. The thread was woven or knit into fabric. Someone had to dye the fabric or print on it. And then a driver had to drive it to my local store or to deliver it to my house. I hate waste because I know how much work goes into each part of production- so I try to not buy it if I won’t actually use it all!

Your words in today’s video echo my thoughts this week. I am in my mid-60’s and what you said about time (or lack thereof) is oh, so true! I have been slowly paring down these past few years. I enjoy reading, and as you mentioned in your video, have amassed more books than I will probably ever have time to read. Unfortunately, books are not the only things in my life that I need to declutter (sigh). It is time to look at all of those items precisely as you described. I simply will not have the time necessary to read the books (or the saved file folders of info, notes, etc., etc.) and it is “time” to more ruthlessly pare down in light of this fact. Thanks for yet another insightful video; it truly spoke to my heart.

Great video! There are so many things we save “Justin Case” (loved that video and just showed it to hubby to help him) and we end up finding the items moldy, dirty or disintegrated by time! Just started a big project to turn a storage area into a “pool hall” for the family! I have been listening to you and Cass and seeing your motivation to tackle big jobs and not worry about throwing things away motivated me! I shoved my garbage can full of stuff that Hubby thought would be useful one day but was rotted by time! My car is full of donations of stuff that still has life (and by the way you can call the donation centers and ask if they accept certain items). I still look around and see more that could go but hubby needs time to get totally on board! It is just such a great feeling! I’ll never have a home like you (totally minimized) but I have a home that is manageable for me and that I can call HOME! By the way, your mothers cards are works of art! So sweet that she donated to the senior center…great idea!

What an excellent vision cast of your entire philosophy! Such a succinct and winsome argument to simplify our lives by simplifying our homes. Thanks for all you do, Dawn! You’ve blessed our family by persuading me that this is what was dragging us down. We’ve transformed our home AND our family life as a result through the inspiration that came from you and your content - I thank God for you, sister! 💕

Love listening to your advice. We are in the season of moving my mom in law into our home. It’s been hard on the family helping clear out her old place. It’s taking several weekends and there is no end in sight. This is a lesson for us not to do the same to our children.

Dawn, that was so inspirational. I'm on year 2 of retirement and am finding that I DON'T have time for all of my "fantasy self " hobbies. Plus some don't even interest me anymore. I've come a long way because of you, and now I think I can happily make another pass. I know I'll breath easier when I do. Thank you Dawn. May God continue to bless your endeavors.

Great video. I think the biggest thing is getting past why you bought or are keeping stuff. I met my husband late in life (met at 36, married at 39, child at 40) and I realized after I got married and had a child 80% of the things I bought I did because I was single and was using retail as therapy because I wasn't happy being alone. I don't do that anymore because I'm happy . So when I donate and throw things away I'm getting rid of far more than I bring in. I'll never be a minimalist but many of the thought processes are so helpful to purge what I no longer need. You and Cas have been a huge inspiration. I've lost track of the truckloads of stuff I've donated and trashed since last September. I still have a ways to go but I've also come so far. Especially mentally

Your cheery attitude always brightens my day and helps me to feel like I can take on the world (or my clutter :) one day at a time. It’s so refreshing! As it’s easy to get frustrated and annoyed to find more clutter here or there! So when I start getting cranky, I always put on one of your videos to brighten my spirits and then go tackle another spot. Thank you for all the wisdom and insight you share with us 💕

I feel like you were speaking directly to me in this video. Your tips and tricks are so great and have helped me a lot. I still have a lot of stuff to purge and some days it’s easier finding the motivation than other days but I think if I start small, one space at a time, I’ll get it to a more manageable state and will feel less anxious about it all. Thanks for sharing, Dawn!

Keep doing what you're doing!! Your videos are making such a big impact on my life. I turn to your videos knowing I'll be encouraged. Everyday is a new opportunity to get one step closer. I can spend 5 minutes on my basket of things that don't seem to have a home and make decisions whereas I used to make excuses.

Thank you so much! I am crying as I write. I am so overwhelmed with all my clutter, and my age and health is also something that I didn’t realize would slow me down with anything that I thought I would have time for. This is such a slow process, and just trying to figure out where to start is a major process in itself. I had major surgery a few weeks ago and my energy has not been the best and recovery has been slow. I just wish I would have decluttered years ago when I was a lot younger. Thank you so much for the encouragement you give in each of your videos! 😉

I am in the same position as yourself and I sympathise with you. I have been completely overwhelmed for many years and it is so exhausting. However, Dawn is just amazing and I try to follow her instructions. I have managed to get rid of a large amount of stuff but there is still far too much left. I just wish that Someone would have told me many years ago what Dawn tells us in every video.

Your channel and mission means the world to me! You, Cass and Dana have changed my life! My mind set, my goals has shifted and the level of HOPE y'all created in me is incredible! You're like my best friends...that I don't actually know🤭 but because of your channel and transparency I definitely feel like you get me and I'm not alone AND I can do this! Y'all are like my "go to" when I'm having a day where I really feel overwhelmed by everything and I might feel depression setting in...hop on and listen to a pick me up, motivational post and I'm off and running! Just want to truly thank you ❤

Dawn, thank you so much for posting your videos! These videos have inspired me so much. I was such a clutter keeper and in the last 3 weeks I have donated close to 700lbs of clutter and I feel so much more free and I feel like my whole family is so much happier in our house. Seriously look forward to your videos!

Happy 40th! So true that we have the best intentions for our fantasy future. Instead of sorting Keep/Trash/Donate, how about Using Now/Future and pack away the future and see if you don’t wean yourself off it as time passes. When I retired, it still took me 1 year to finish 1 set of memory books for my 21 yr old

Hi, Dawn. Happy birthday. I just wanted to tell you that you have changes my whole perspective on my home and my relationship with it. I have followed you for a couple of weeks now, and have already gotten so much stuff out of our house. I watch your videos every day, and it gives me so much inspiration to continue taking my house back. Not only that, but by sharing your message we have since become a group of people joining in and supporting each other in the process. So, thank you so much for every video you share. It really is helping my life get back on track. Sending you my best, Vanessa from Norway.

Sometimes now I challenge myself to spend more time with something or declutter it. Sometimes I realize I don't really like whatever it is enough to devote the time to keep things.. And sometimes I remember how much I LOVE doing something! This is why I started reading more & actually wearing my pretty dresses lol On the other hand, I like the idea of sewing but I'm just never going to do it. lol

I didn't get my time "back" until this year. I have one that just went off to college and one a sophomore in HS. You always think, "well when X happens, I'll have more time". Nope! Not the case at all. Something is always vying for our time. Over the past couple of months, I have been RUTHLESS about decluttering and owing as little as I/we can to function. I'm the one who is the household manager so, I'm the one dealing with ALL OF THE STUFF. Great video! Leslie

Oh my gosh, I had to chuckle to myself today, as I went to the donation table in town, with a bike rack (that we’ve owned for 10+ years) that won’t fit on either of our current cars ... all I could envision was Tom, covered in “Justin Case” stickers!!! How much stuff am I NEVER going to use??? It’s TIME!!! Lol
