Front Kick has got to be one of the easiest Martial Arts Techniques to throw. Some people call it a teep, some call it a mae geri (kekomi or jodan), some call it an apchagi or ap chagi, but the stabbing front kick and pushing front kick in more all have a lot more in common with different Martial Arts styles than it would seem! In this episode of comparing Martial Arts Techniques, I talk with a WT Taekwondo Master and 5th Dan, Master David Wright, a talented Muay Thai Coach in Josh Brackett, and the one and only Icy Mike from ‪@hard2hurt‬ who tells us his opinion on throwing front kicks in a street fight (which isn't too far from some of the karate front kicks to be honest).
If you want to learn more about Icy Mikes Front Kick Tutorial, you can check it out here!

This video is cool, what I like a lot is that I can also compare from my martial arts I have done, so for me when I did kungfu (just 1 example) I was taught to actually hit with the heal of ur foot so u can get wayy more power and that if u did the ball of ur foot its mainly for reach but the power is from the heal and ur body

I do TKD, and in my case, I use the front kick as a "guard transition" kick: that means don't retreat the leg, I let go my delayed leg with all my weight and then it's becomes into my foward leg. For me that method had pretty more power than just extend the leg
@zacmich6472
@zacmich6472 3 жыл бұрын
You should always retreat the leg for safety. Never let it stay midair! Just practice it, and you'll see, the kick feels much better that way. You can always change guard After inflicting pain and fear.

@@zacmich6472 the leg don't stay in the air, fall with the bodys weight. Obviously I know how to kick at that way also, but looks useless to me, and the guard change it's just a plus value, you can swith guard again before xD
@zacmich6472
@zacmich6472 3 жыл бұрын
@@kensakugawa6907 Still. In competitions you need a point, not to kill your opponent :) . In self-defense dropping a foot forward makes you vulnerable to punches. Ap chagi should be like a whip, like any other Taekwondo kick. It's a little different from Karate where more emphasis is made on power but, in return, it will be much faster.
@kensakugawa6907
@kensakugawa6907 3 жыл бұрын
@@zacmich6472 oh I see what's happens. You're talking about ap chagui, but I'm talking about miro chagui (front push kick). Dude any kick let you open to punch or counter attack, you may have a good guard and reflexes into a real fight xD My problem with ap chagui is that I don't find it so useful out of competition, because it's ascendent kick that begins with a curve trayectory and then draws a line between 75°-90° degrees, the human body standing up normaly it's in 90° degrees (alike a wall). So the most of the power of the kick goes into a parelel line with your oponets body instead beak through the body (unless you make it high and hits the chin). So for me circular kicks are better to hurt your oponent body, but is just my opinion.

If you look at an ancient style like Pankration, which dates back around 2,500 years ago, their version of the front kick (Gastrezein) struck with the heel instead of the ball of the foot. The purpose the Spartans used it for was to aim to smash straight through an opponent's shield, which supposedly has happened on several occasions throughout Greek history. Fun little martial arts history lesson for you.

Try this. Put on some boots with a good sole and heel. Go outside and find a telephone pole in a graveled area. Do a rear leg skip kick with your heel to the telephone pole. This is the door breaker kick and the hardest kick you can throw against a hard object. You must be sliding forward simultaneously on the standing foot and traveling, you get your body weight into the kick. You might get a better result if your toes are turned slightly outward. FWIW. Good vid, SS.

Mike does a traditional karate front kick. And it is absolutely the best form of the kick imo. WB also just did a video talking about that style. Whichi repeat is hands down the best. Savate also does the front kick that way. Ultimately though, most "styles" can teach you how to fight. Getting caught up on "style" will result in you never moving past a journeyman martial artist

Interesting things to note about this Taekwondo front kick compared to the Taekwon-Do front kick: 1- In Taekwon-Do, you never strike with a front kick higher than your own solar plexus, as the higher angle and the limitation of your forward hip movement will send you to your heel and unbalance you against a heavy or forward moving target. That's why we see to compensate, Taekwon-Do use the side front kick; basically the same motion except the supporting leg is turned as in a roundhouse kick so that the hip is freed and weight does not fall back on the heel; exactly like the Muay Thai exponent is doing. The Taekwondo exponent actually does it as well, turning his support foot, thus not showing an actual front kick (like the streetfighter/kickboxing exponent does) but a side front kick. 2- In Taekwon-Do, you never straighten the leg fully in a front kick. Not only does it creates imbalance (as we see the Taekwondo exponent several times fall forward after his kick) and a perfect opportunity for a grappler or sweeper to catch you, but it will cause joint injury over time, something a lot of Olympic fighters complain about after a few years. Moreover, if your limb is fully extended on contact, your power will be greatly diminished as you will lack penetration. 3- In Taekwon-Do, chambering the front kick is done with the knee as high as possible to insure the straightest possible line to the target. That's why playing soccer gives no benefit whatsover to Taekwon-Do kicking; actually, it could develop the wrong motor skills to kick effectively anything but a ball. 4- In Taekwon-Do, kicking is done with the whole body, not just the leg. The supporting leg, the hip transfer forward, the extension of the limb, the balancing retraction of the arms, the body and head kept forward, all must be done in coordination. The streetfighter/kickboxing exponent explains it quite well. 5- In Taekwon-Do, the leg is rechambered and forcefully brought down to the ground, not just letting it fall back down. Thus you regain balance, mobility and follow-up kicking faster with either foot while diminishing chances of being grabbed or swept. 6- In Taekwon-Do, you may have different attacking tools for different targets or uses; i.e. toes for throat, sole to stop or push, instep for groin, inside edge of the foot to jam, heel to the ankle etc... 7- In Taekwon-Do, the front kick is combined with many different stepping motions depending on circumstances and/or intent; standing to block, sliding to jab, shuffling to combo, crossing to get more power, switching to change attitude, spinning for more reach, jumping for more elevation etc 8- In Taekwon-Do, you learn to kick backwards as much as forward, using the opponent's momentum towards you. Thanks for those vids btw. Most interesting and instructional and you have good people working with you. Kudos to you all.

Long Live the ITF!
@odojang
@odojang 3 жыл бұрын
@@thatwolfensteinguy8954 Unfortunately, many schools and various ITF ''federations'' are moving more and more towards Olympic Taekwondo. Few still maintain the fullness of the art as developped by General Choi Hong Hi; in particular, the richness of hand techniques, equal to any Karate-Do style, the power principles, the hardening of offensive and defensive tools, the many methods of sparring, the unique competiton format (which has patterns, team patterns, free sparring with both hands and feet, power breaking and performance breaking) and the moral culture are discarded in favor of ''scoring in Olympic sparring.'' There are so many ITFs now with so many different methods and goals, it's hard to know what ITF even means anymore except ''Taekwon-Do, not Taekwondo.''

Ah the lovely front kick(maegeri), the one learned first, the one I can make someone eat my toes but also the one I can hurt my knee when applied wrong. Kinda using the pushing version since we are thought to push forward with the hip so far. Also, so far the one I kinda don't really do much (please note, white belt speaking)in HJJ or kickboxing, maybe to make space to fix my guard. Most drills are about punches and roundhouse kicks and to finish with takedown or back kick. So it's all about transistions from one move to another while pushing forward hard. No place for front kicks there so far, maybe later with higher belt ranks.

In sparring and fights (in the ring, not the street), my front kick is most like the “street fighter”. Easier to incorporate into a combo and use on the fly. Front leg works like a jab, back leg like a cross. The TKD kick, for me, just takes too long and is too reliant on perfect distance vs a moving opponent. The TKD snap kick is more effective for setting distance and setting up a roundhouse or side.

Taekwon Do has 2 Front Kicks. 1 is a Front Thrusting Kick, like what he has Demonstrated, (more of a pushing action) the other is a Front Snap Kick, far more explosive action. If you kick a bag with a Thrust Kick it'll swing around heaps etc, but if you kick a bag with a Snap Kick, it'll barely move but have a nice big dint in it. A snap kick is more devastating, as it has a more internal effect on the opponent.

I'd been front kicking for years in full contact kickboxing but it felt mega sloppy (my fault for lack of desire to improve it). It wasn't until I started karate that it actually became more tidy and felt useful. It was the chambering that made a world of difference. My front kick still kinda sucks but that's my fault for not consciously using it enough as I prefer the standing sidekick. Karate definitely helped me though.

I have to agree with mike about the context of the kick. Cuz truthfully, they all look mostly the same. To me the front kick its the best one cause works like the jab (to me also de best punch), they are the Swiss knifes of striking. ¿Want to mantain distance? perfect, ¿want to cut distance? perfect too cause you can push the other person using that second they use in defend or were pushed, ¿dont want to fight but just want to gain time or knock the other? works too, and best of all, you dont need loots of training and fisical conditioning to do them, a thick boy with the flexibility of a tree like me cant kick your face, but i can breat you sternum/knee/nose/orbital or send you fliying using a front kick/jab xD

Teep actually means "kick away" with the feeling of the word stomp in Thai. Very crude word if you know what I mean, haha. I think muay Thai is mainly good due to conditioning(bone density), I mean these guys kick banana trees till their leg bones become iron. It's about outlasting your opponent ,playing the pain and endurance game(your leg will snap before mine). I feel like this kind of conditioning can be used in taekwondo etc... Icy Mike's version is objectively the best one. Like he says the fastest to do and requires the least amount of commitment.

I never liked the snappy kicks. i mean, if my intentions were to the 🥜 than ya those snap front kicks are brutal lol. i think i just float towards the muay thai because honesty, i mainly use it to control the gap. Getting caught in the belly button with it will really make you think about who is in control of the gap lol

@@Rainstorm_100 great point. I dont kick much above the belly button, but if i was going to kick to the jaw, it would probably be by using a snap kick as sort of an uppercut i guess. If that makes sense.

When I was in the army, we tried throwing it with the striking surface was the heel instead of the ball of the foot. My Muay Thai and isshin Ryu background it’s with the balls of the feet. Cool video as always sensei

When I became a macp instructor we were told to teach it muay thai style, with the whole bottom of the foot being the striking surface because of the combat boot. But honestly those who take macp seriously and really take fighting seriously and train, usually develop what is better for them individually. Then gets yelled at in combatives by someone who doesnt really train because "thats not what the training manual says!" Lmao.

The original purpose of the mae geri technique was to brake the bladder, so the kick was under the navel, short and powerful. Due to changes brought by competitions and marketing now the kick might have a different purpose. Originally it was a deadly kick and that's how it was taught.
