The lady that was the software engineer or the unemployed couple I felt spent their money the wisest. The software engineer got a decent amount of grains with what she got, but the unemployed couple got the most fresh fruit and vegetables for the money. I can definitely relate though $150 in my house is used to feed four people for two weeks, and that is breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Thankfully we keep it pretty simple with breakfast with smoothies or fruit or oatmeal, and lunch we usually just have the leftovers from the dinner if it didn't all get eaten the night before.
@kateashley90076 жыл бұрын
Girl Nerdified poor people don't often spend money on produce because it's shelf life, so if you're given 100 dollars you'll spend it on things you haven't been able to enjoy. The two men probably dont get to eat tons of fruit and the man on ss probably can't afford to buy sweets.

I have so much respect for people who are on an insanely tight budget and so much less judgment for people who don't take care of their bodies nutritionally. It's sad that I had to live off $200/month for food, household products, and medicine to fully understand and believe just how real an issue "food deserts" are for people in low-income situations.

It's hard to split up how I'd spend $100 at the grocery store, because I don't shop weekly most of the time. When I get my $ I go to Sam's and make big bulk purchases like meats, cheeses, eggs, tortillas. Maybe pasta if we're running low. But not their veggies or canned goods because I can find those cheaper elsewhere. usually comes to about $150-200. Package up the meat and freeze it. Then for canned goods, condiments etc, it's walmart because unless one of the grocery stores is running a sale it's cheaper that way. Usually somewhere around $20-$30 in canned goods for the pantry, maybe less depending on what's left from the month before. And then Sprouts because in general their fresh fruits and veggies have great sales and are cheaper than a lot of other places, so I'll stock up on fresh stuff that's on sale, especially apples because they're my 15 year old son's favorite. They're also great for their bulk foods. Granola, and rices. And then sometimes we'll grab a little bit of our favorite candy. But altogether for a family of 3, for the month, I spend under $400.

I understand it's his money and he can spend it how he wants, but why would he even question if he's middle class if he can easily spend the biggest chunk of his grocery allowance on wine? Just admit you have money dude.
@shikaluv218 жыл бұрын
+cupnoodles201 Yeah, as someone who is wayyy under middle class, I would never dream of spending so much on a bottle of wine. In fact, since I live in a place where even "cheap" alcohol is super expensive, I don't buy it at all. Also avocados and asparagus (the only vegetables that guy bought) are the two most expensive vegetables you can buy where I live. Maybe the reason he doesn't feel middle class is because he has no extra money after he's done spending it all on things he doesn't need :P.

I'm a uni student and get by on just £15 a week on groceries (I could spend more but I'm trying to save some money to put in savings), I don't have a car so I walk 1.3 miles to the budget supermarket and walk back again with all my shopping. Yeah it's quite a trek for me but I save way more money than my housemates who all spend maybe £35 a week on food (more than twice as much!) by going to the more expensive shops. consequently they're broke and im not :)

Groceries are actually fairly priced in Australia, especially at the major supermarkets and we can pick up 4 liters (1 gallon) of boxed wine for $12, leaving $88 for food! Which is plenty to get a single guy through the week. Especially when I do most of my eating for free at work (hospitality)
