How Different Size Quarter Pipes Affect Your Skating

In this video I discuss the effects that different size quarter pipes can have on your skating. Over the years I’ve started to understand the reasons why certain tricks would work better on steep transition and worse on mellow transition and vice versa.

A few years ago , as a joke, a friend and I built the mellowest quarter we could. (In response to all the tight transitions in our town, the tiniest ramp had even a foot of vert on it) It was about 3 or 4 feet tall with a radius of about 15 or 20 feet. It was really difficult to skate as a quarter pipe, we ended up just using it as a launch ramp.

We have a super mellow mini ramp at a park near us. I had learned some of my earlier rock tricks on it still when I was just rolling back over the coping. I went back to that park after a year and realized realized how much I use the leverage against the ramp for tricks. I could barely do anything on it because I would either not go back in fast enough for my timing or slide up and over the coping.

A lot of skaters try to explain this in person but are too vague. You did a great job here Chad

The shot you use from 3:12 is perfect to illustrate the point you make about the mellow bank style vs the tighter radius. Mellow ramp is hanging out in the background like “Yo!” Even being there in person I tend to be pretty numb to the differences in ramps and their suitability for certain tricks. Except the last one you show in the SW corner. That transition radius is a bit too short. Everyone finds it rough. Having so many choices is a luxury no other park seems to have.

You are so right. I go to certain parks for certain quarters. I have a sequence of parks i to to for leveling up tricks. One park has a bank to a short but perfect steepness qp, the next has a small bowl, then a bowl about a steep as the first qp, then there's an indoor park with a nice mini ramp. Kind of a pain to go around to all the parks but it really helps build the confidence.

Wow good to hear. I’ve been skating street for a long time in a small town, no access to obstacles and I just moved within the last year to a populated area so it’s my goal to understand and flow on obstacles like this. Thank you!

I wish more parks had a variety of transition radiuses like this park appears to have. Most of our parks seem to have a single radius used at the park, making it harder to find the right spot to do different tricks.

my most hilarious skate fails came from misjudging quarter transitions. over-confident from having mini-ramps in my yard for years, i'd just go right at them with big first try attempts. went for big frontside disaster but suddenly i'm just on my butt on the ramp wondering where my board went. wtf, where'd it go, where'd it...*CLONK*. It was a few dozen ft in the air above my head. basically same thing 10 yrs later, but that time it def gave me a concussion and nearly knocked me out LOL

Ive been talking about this with some homies of mine, I learned feeble fakies in the mini bowl and I think it will be easier in the regular bowl because I wont have to manual as long. I just need to sack up now haha

Wish I had some selection near me. We got one steep 3-4 footer quarter and a metal halfpipe that's pretty rough. Being 40(falls hurt so much longer) and a beginner, the steep one can be rough to learn on.

@@RamManNo1 Ouch man, that's rough. Luckily I haven't broke anything yet, lol. Just some really nasty bruises and a sprained wrist. But its funny, I watch kids fall and they sort of bounce back up, I fall and its a hard thud lol. TO be honest tho, its all worth it. Gettin back on a skateboard (after 20 years for me) was one of the best decisions I made in a while. Fuckin love it.

the most fun is a tiny ramp which are steep as hell more a wall than a ramp always high injury risk but if you make a trick it feels so good...but if you fail you know "ok im not 16 anymore" xD

All the respect, but when you locked into the feeble on the mellow QP you were way too on your toeside wheel. You can definitely do feebles on mellow QPs, just like when you hit a slappy on a single-sided curb (with a deck); just gotta lock extra hard on that heelside wheel even though you're on the ball of your foot.
