"Disney had the resources, talent and opportunity to take Star Wars in both directions". Maybe resources and opportunity but not talent. What they could have done from the start after they got the franchise was to take the drafts of George Lucas and develop them into real, well written stories. But instead, they decided to disregard them. If they really relied on nostalgia and talent, then they had given the old beloved characters of Star Wars a respectful treatment (like KK promised to) while introducing the new ones. Instead, they gave it in the hands of totally untalented directors and storywriters who wanted them to die as quick as possible (especially the male ones) and introduce a Mary Sue (or space princess) who actually needs nobody because she's just perfect in everything. Disney was never really interested in Star Wars itself but to get their high investment in it back as fast as possible. And because they don't understand Star Wars, the result is flop after flop. Now the damanage is done and only a wonder far far away could bring it back to the times when fans were really excited about a new Star Wars movie.

This is exactly how you save SW. 1. Clean house of all the trash that have been making terrible choices, as well as people who the fans straight up hate. Ie Kathleen Kennedy. 2. They need to fix the story. Which will be a little dirty but it has to happen if they story is to continue or even explore the past. They need to pull some bull sht and bring Luke back in some way. There are dozens of ways to do it and it make sense in the lore, but in all honesty nobody will care. Any way they bring back Luke is infinitely better than how his character sits right now. 3. With a new Luke, and this Luke would be younger. You cast an actual person to play him, and then you sample content from legends. Bringing in Characters such as Mara Jade. And then this Luke actually brings balance to the force by successfully restarting the new Jedi order. With this, you are able to patch up some of the holes the sequel trilogy left. Via some crap new Luke learns. Maybe he gets force visions of the previous Luke. Force echo like Cal, whatever. And Ray, could actually be a companion to him, maybe playing a role that Leah obviously can’t fill in some legends scenarios. With these flash backs you’re able to give us reasons to bring In certain characters and you’re able to patch up the past and set up a future for the story as well. Without fixing Luke, starwars will never be successful. M

I’m going to mention Stephen King’s The Stand again in this post. It’s one of my favorite stories, and at one time, I really, really wish there were a sequel to such a wonderful book. However, I’ve realized that just like Star Wars, there can never be a decent sequel after Return of the Jedi because the conflict that drove the entire Star Wars movie series George Lucas had created was resolved. What was the conflict that drove The Stand? It was Randall Flagg, aka The Dark Man and The Walkin’ Dude. Once he was defeated, the story was over. The same thing is true about Star Wars, which is the story of the birth, life and death of the Sith. Once the Sith (Emperor Palpatine and Darth Vader) were defeated, the story is FINISHED! THE END. Bringing back Darth Vader, or Emperor Palpatine, or even the Sith cheapens the victory accomplished by what Luke Skywalker and the Rebels had worked so hard to accomplish. That is why the Disney Star Wars movies will be forgotten and people will never have an interest in seeing them ever again.

You mention this scratching of heads several times caused me to feel the urge to scratch my head. Furthermore I have the distinct feeling that the producers of Disney enjoyed the destruction they caused. As if the deconstruction of a beloved myth seemed to elevate them, because they themselves could not make such succeessful products they take pride in the deconstruction of ones that are. But it is all done now. They killed the goose that layed golden eggs and now they are bemoaning that, blaming hypercritical fans. You can observe the same coping mechanism working for the Marvel franchise. We should not feel too sad. When George Lucas created SW he was doing something fresh. We will have to wait for someone to have a similar creative impetus. That is the way of the universe, the old gives way to the new!

The funny thing to me is, if you read every book, comic, and game about star wars that came out before disney took over people would notice that nothing has really changed. While there are numerous books and games that are beloved like the Thrawn trilogy and the x-wing series there are also bafflingly bad ones that came before disney took over as well. When a franchise produces this much content it is bound to have some hit and miss moments. This is also what is going on with Disney's marvel right now. They need to slow down how much they are working on (which they did with Marvel) and improve quality control.
@Padtedesco18 күн бұрын
Yes. And they had all that, but thrown it out the window because believed that being an unethical opportunist turn you in an art specialist. Yes, that is how Disney got great, unnethical actions that she took when law allowed. Now Disney corporate believe that they know better what is good and what is bad Star Wars compared to... reality of older works.
@John-fk2ky15 күн бұрын
Your analysis is laughably off. Those different materials were written over the course of decades, and there’s an almost incomprehensible amount of the old EU stuff. Of course there are good ones and bad ones. That’s always a given. No one said the EU was flawless. But the general ideas behind it were great, and as you should have probably noticed, all that stuff sold really well. Disney’s hasn’t. Why? Because it is consistently not good, with good being the exception rather than the rule. It also, despite starting from scratch, managed to do what it took simply having too much material for the EU to do. It broke its own continuity, violating the chief reason for sidelining the EU.
@schmelzwah14 күн бұрын
@@John-fk2ky The sold well or not well is not a good metric, because if you did know the EU stuff you would know that it actually sold less often than the disney stuff. In addition, people talking about the EU usually are talking about the same 5 or so stories, which had broken continuity in them as well, with hundreds of other stories dropping to obscurity or just not being good. The "quality", "consistency" or "ideas" of star wars haven't really changed by the group changing hands if you have been following all the content coming out from both groups since the beginning.

For me, strictly speaking for myself I would like Star Wars to move away from the Sith and Jedi because both groups are equally unfvcking interesting. You have one group of "Space Wizards" who have powers that took the high road and the other group of "Space Wizards" who let their powers corrupt them. The Wizards take people's children to train them, do the parents ever even ask "take my 6-year old and train them for what exactly"?
@yrooxrksvi714220 күн бұрын
This moronic mindset can come from the POV of someone who sticked to the movies only, the Disney+ slop and overrated cartoons like TCW and Rebels. As a result, Jedi and Sith have been poorly explored and mishandled, while being overexposed as shallow archetypes. Play KOTOR 1 and 2, read the Republic and Legacy comics, the Darth Bane and Plagueis books and you'll see why people were so invested. It's more than just "Space Wizards that abduct babies vs evil space wizards". And when you remove them, what do you even get ? The blandest excuse for a space western or a generic pseudo-cyberpunk fanfiction. The Mandalorian was so utterly boring, it eventually leaned onto Force sensitives yet again. Andor is a creatively void and generic spy thriller with token characters and the same tiresome Rebels vs Empire backdrop. Outlaws was laughably bad, and Skeleton Crew is a Goonies/Stranger Things rip-off.
